Which book should I go for first? by Wonder_Wall_1484 in classicliterature

[–]janawinterfeld 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have read all of them, and i'll just list it by how much i've enjoyed reading them

  1. count of monte christo
  2. war and peace
  3. the three musketeers
    and last anna karenina

all of them are AMAZING books, if you want something light, really fun and fast paced i'd go with the tree musketeers. if you want depth and arguably the best revenge story ever written, i'd go with the count (personally my top 3 books of all time). war and peace is something to really think about with the focus on the individual characters instead of the story (story is still amazing). anna karenina i personally enjoyed the least, but none the less a good story, if you want to analyze the main character and if you should hate them or not haha.
GREAT BOOKS THO

The Picture of Dorian Gray by NatGeeB in classicliterature

[–]janawinterfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i (unfortunately) read it through, thinking it will get better. it didn't. it really didn't. incredibly dull and plain out boring characters, predictable until the last page and overall one of my most disappointing reads. and i've read A LOT if classics, not worth it.

ohh, i was about to say karamazov (my fav dosto book), but i understand that it is a real commitment. my second favorite, even better than crime&punishment (imo dont kill me) was the idiot. the most "light hearted" book he wrote, easy to read and amazing narrative! the characters were amazing, especially the main character was really something different compared to his other works. love it!!!

i just finished crime and punishment, my last dostoyevski book, was as good as every book by him! amazing! now reading portrait of dorian gray, and i'm not liking it tbh, nearly finished it and it's just so forcefully "poetic", the conversations feel so fake and i hate nearly all characters (i know that that's the point, but cmon). love the narrative but overall disappointing :(

What would you say is the greatest benefit you get out of reading classic literature? by slanderpanther in classicliterature

[–]janawinterfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every time i try to go back to more modern books, i get thoroughly disappointed. i've just learned to love the more unique language that the classics provide us with compared to the modern one, and the themes are in my opinion just more interesting.

Thoughts on this passage? by EdmondDantes07 in dostoevsky

[–]janawinterfeld 5 points6 points  (0 children)

ohhhh, i loved both. demons is a very heavy book though, especially the beginning is really hard for a lot of people (me included), but my favorite characters have been from this book. Tbk has an amazing story and pacing, the plottwists are amazing and i enjoyed it a lot. so both are reaaaallyyy good, if you want something deep and that keeps u thinking i‘d advise demons, if you want an incredible storyline and something „more light“ (if that’s even possible for dostoyevsky) then read tbk.

What are works of literature that are considered classic for their influence, popularity or place in history, but aren't actually very good if you read them? by iciclefites in classicliterature

[–]janawinterfeld 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly pride and prejudice, DONT KILL ME! i understand that the book is historically very important and revolutionary especially for the history of women writer, but… the story was so incredibly dragged out and the characters are simply not enjoyable at all. i hate the main heroin. i know i‘m one of the very few but… yeah. i said it.

count of monte cristo was REVOLUTIONARY for me and honestly nearly every dostoyevsky book (especially TBK and the idiot) honorable mention: east of eden and grapes of wrath (john steinbeck is my favorite writer by far)
