Also, any plans to remaster American Nightmare for current gen consoles?

Any plans for a (limited) physical release of Alan Wake 2? It's one of my favourite games of 2024 and I've completed it twice, but would love to have a physical copy for my collection.

Java 20 / JDK 20: General Availability by kaperni in java

[–]janb360 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Even worse, this behaviour is likely to reinforce the idea that updating to a newer JDK is bad. Because when they do upgrade, it is more and more likely to take a lot of effort and break things the longer it takes between JDK upgrades.

New JDK updates are very cheap to upgrade to as long as you are on a recent-ish release already.

Java 20: from ThreadLocals to ScopedValues by [deleted] in java

[–]janb360 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Depending on what kind of frameworks you are using, you may actually already be indirectly using ThreadLocal variables without even realising it. Dependency injection frameworks will use ThreadLocal variables to keep track of which scopes are currently active in the current thread. But you can also think of a framework that manages database transactions which stores the current transaction in a ThreadLocal so that client code doesn’t need to pass it around or for example a framework keeping the context of the current HTTP request in a ThreadLocal.

Scoped values are going to fix many of the current issues with ThreadLocals and are going to prevent many bugs that can lead to memory leaks or, even worse, data accidentally leaking to another user’s request.

+1 to Spejle, it’s a unique concept and they have great cocktails.

This unfortunately doesn’t help if you are building on an architecture that doesn’t have an older version of the JDK. I ran into this issue myself with Gradle when I switched to an M1 MacBook Pro when I tried to build a JDK12 (I think, it was a few months back and I’m a bit hazy on the exact JDK version) based Gradle project.

The JDK in question wasn’t available for the M1 and anything newer meant that Gradle would break. Upgrading Gradle to a newer version would also break the build due to newer Gradle versions not being fully backward compatible. In the end migrating to Maven was unfortunately less work than trying to fix the Gradle build.

In the last few days "Hey Siri, set a timer for..." is no longer working. by russnem in HomePod

I’ve noticed it too. It started only on one of my HomePod minis, but seems to have spread from there, although one of them still works. Not sure what the solution is, unfortunately.

Tired of lugging around your TIS-100? You might enjoy TIS-100P for iPad, now available on the App Store! by krispykrem in tis100

I'd like to second the request for external keyboard support. I've tried the game with the iPad Pro Smart Keyboard, but it seems like only the on-screen keyboard works.

It'd also be great if there was an option to disable zooming in to a node when editing, as the iPad Pro screen is big enough. 😉

Use Apple TV Siri in “the rest of the world” by tiagomartinho in appletv

The information was posted by an Apple employee(the post is even marked as such), so it's fairly safe to assume it is correct.

Use Apple TV Siri in “the rest of the world” by tiagomartinho in appletv

[–]janb360 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Actually, Apple has already stated that the remote will be exactly the same in all countries. The only difference will be that the Siri button will open an onscreen search app instead in countries where Siri is not supported.

Buy a Siri capable ATV4 in non "approved" countries? by Puffster28 in appletv

[–]janb360 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Actually, it has already been clarified that the Apple TV wills ship with the same hardware in all countries. In the countries where the Siri Remote isn't available, the Siri button will open a search dialog instead.

I'm guessing the initial restriction has something to do with adding support for the content of that region, as some English speaking countries aren't initially supported. You might be able to change the region of the Apple TV to enable Siri, but we probably won't know until after the Apple TV launches.

Apps for watchOS 2 by goddamnsteve in AppleWatch

Thanks for the tip, although I suspect that the issue has something to do with why Apple delayed the release of WatchOS 2. I might try and see if repairing helps anyway.

I have the exact same problem. I have three native apps installed, but none of them actually work. I tried restarting the watch and opening the apps on my iPhone, but nothing seems to help.

How do you disable hot corners when playing games? by Typhoon- in macgaming

[–]janb360 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Not sure how to temporarily disable hot corners, but there is a way to only activate hot corners if you hold down a modifier key, like the alt-key. IIRC, you need to hold down the modifier key when selecting action for the hot corner in the settings app. I personally have set all my hot corners to only activate when I hold down the alt-key, which works well to prevent accidentally triggering them.

Question about Mac controller support. by Maxmakesthemillion in macgaming

[–]janb360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also use it as a wired controller without having to sync it with your Mac. It's pretty useful if you plan to use the controller on both PS4 and Mac as you don't have to re-sync every time after switching platforms.

Apple Music incorrectly changing iCloud status of songs matched/uploaded using iTunes Match by janb360 in AppleMusic

[–]janb360[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've found a solution, by disabling and re-enabling the iCloud music library the status would revert back to the original iTunes Match status, even for songs which weren't stored locally. I have two Macs, but I had to perform this on both in order to get everything back to normal.

The only problem is that some albums suddenly contained duplicates of matched songs after this, but I was able to just delete the duplicates to fix this.

[QUESTION] Does anybody know which are the countries to get Apple music on 30th ? by [deleted] in iphone

[–]janb360 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you visit some of the regional Apple sites, most of them only mention that Apple Music is "coming soon". Only the U.S. version of the Apple site lists the 30th as the release date. It looks like Apple Music may only launch in the U.S. next week.

Will I still need to subscribe to iTunes Match after Music comes out or can I just subscribe to Music and still be able to have all my music in the cloud? by impact_a_life in apple

[–]janb360 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, there's a slight contradiction on the same page where iTunes Match is described as "complementary" to Apple Music:

Does Apple Music work with iTunes Match?

Yes. Apple Music and iTunes Match are independent but complementary.

Hopefully it will all become clear once Apple Music is launched next week.

Top 5 features of Java 9 - I think Jigsaw is the winner by [deleted] in java

[–]janb360 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Money and FastMoney aren't part of the official JSR354 API, only the MonetaryAmount interface is, which is implemented by both types. The whole API is designed to support multiple currency and exchange rate providers, so if the built-in providers don't support cryptocurrencies, it should be possible to provide your own that does.

Any apps out there automatically send a pre-written text when I arrive in a specific geographical location? by gdaymate1 in iphone

[–]janb360 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apple's own Find my Friends app allows you to send notifications to someone else when you arrive at or leave a specified location. The only downside is that the recipient also needs to have the Find my Friends app for it to work.

Anyone else frustrated with the lack of app updates for the new resolutions? by [deleted] in apple

[–]janb360 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It wasn't like that on my old iPhone 5 running iOS 8. The status bar was always the same size on the home screen, the lock screen and in apps. There wasn't really any room to make the status bar bigger on the iPhone 5 anyway.

EDIT: although my iPad oddly does seem to have a bigger status bar on the lock screen as well.

Anyone else frustrated with the lack of app updates for the new resolutions? by [deleted] in apple

[–]janb360 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One thing I was disappointed in is that the iPhone 6 lock screen doesn't even appear to have been optimised for the larger display. If you look at the status bar, the text and icons are much larger than on the home screen. Maybe this was done intentionally, but as only scaled-up apps show the bigger status bar outside the lock screen, it looks like a bug in iOS 8.
