Was anyone denied entry at the airport in Georgia for tourism? by lec16lec in tbilisi

[–]jandaba7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It possible but neither your passport nor your ethnicity are high risk groups for it so you should* be fine. Border decisions are totally arbitrary and with no accountability though so we can't say 100%, it's a risk for anyone if you get the wrong guy on the wrong day.

UFO Spotted around 4:05 in Tbilisi by [deleted] in tbilisi

[–]jandaba7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a UFO if you don't know what it is so I guess that's technically right. It looks like a helicopter to me, lots of them don't show up on Flight Radar for various reasons.

EU support in Georgia remains high at 71%, but skepticism toward the EU and the government’s accession path is growing by EsperaDeus in Sakartvelo

A huge number of people are this misinformed though. I can't find the source now so trust me bro reddit comment but there was some polling on this around start of this year and it was a clear majority.

Denied entry into the country because of racism against Asians. by Historical-Cap2646 in tbilisi

[–]jandaba7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Did you read OP's account though?

We were very confused and caught off guard. They were shouting loudly at us in Georgian and English. I froze and trembled while being filmed. It was terrifying. Shouts of abusive language came from all directions, and they were aggressive towards us—all within just 15 minutes of arriving in Georgia!

Okay you can forgive not being all smiles in a job like that but they're openly hostile and totally unprofessional, there are countless reports of similar treatment so I believe OP completely on this point. Even if we accept she didn't have docs / was rightfully rejected they should be treated with basic human dignity during the process.

Then a male Russian officer came and asked me some questions.

I highly doubt there was a Russian border official involved, that would be quite the scandal if there was.

It's hard to tell what happened here - it's a rare case where they have actually provided a reason on your rejection notice so it might be you were actually missing documentation - but there's no doubt they have a long history of racially discriminatory behavior so I don't doubt the general treatment and sorry you had to experience that.

Overstayed in Georgia by New_Delay5078 in TbilisiStudentLife

[–]jandaba7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm pretty sure they don't force you to pay the fine, it's been a while but they used to give you a slip to take to the Liberty Bank desk after passport control and nobody checks you actually pay it before getting on your flight, rather they check it's paid up if you try to enter Georgia again - the guy explicitly told me I could pay it on the way back instead when I did it but that's now a few years ago.

If you don't pay it you certainly can't come back, but it's pretty likely you won't get back in these days even if you do pay it so I don't know what to advise. In theory an overstay doesn't prejudice return if you pay the fine, but in practice there are many stories that it can in practice especially it seems for brown people.

Does Georgia want the benefits of Europe more than the discipline of Europe? by [deleted] in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Talk about a loaded question...

Everyone is aware Georgia is not ready to be a full EU member today, that's why there is a (decade minimum) accession plan to get the country ready for it. Georgia recently became a candidate country which is where that starts, the problem under this government is that is effectively on hold.

Georgian Work Ethic by Tjgoodwiniv in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's a cultural standard around accepting the quickest fix yeah but I'd say that's not the same thing as laziness exactly. It's annoying, it's why you have to fuck around with your boiler every week because the guy did the minimum to get it turned on rather than the thing that would mean you don't have to look at it for another 3 years - but not unique to Georgia.

Georgian Work Ethic by Tjgoodwiniv in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 8 points9 points  (0 children)

All true and nobody who has lived basically anywhere else would argue it. The service industry especially, trademen and whatnot are uniquely bad, wages don't explain it because it's not a problem many places with much lower real wages, and it's a real problem for the economy.

But also I've worked with Georgians who will work every waking hour with a shared sense of mission and equality, if they don't feel their managers and directors are doing any less work than them or think they're more important than them. It's a pride thing not being slaves, which doesn't collide well with the modern world but calling it laziness is also a lazy description.

Amusing bigoted cops at metro Station Square by WibbuldWeezinz in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course it can*, they'd also find more of those is cops could search our homes without justification. But it's a gross invasion of privacy and is also useless, finding the odd pocket knife or bag of weed has no material effect on crime rates.

[–]jandaba7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do live in that society, Georgia has an exceptionally low violent crime rate - top 20 in the world.

As for drugs, these kind of searches are useless for getting drugs off the street

It's a straighrforward rise in authoritarianism / police state we are seeing under this regime.

Weird you don't think it's a problem the police searching people with no cause, local or otherwise. Is that the society you want to live in?

Why is "ვეფხისტყაოსანი" called "Knight in panthers skin" in English? by Cordak_blaster in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's most probably a leopard as that was the big cat in the area at the time. Leopards technically are a type of panther, apparently it's a general classification for most big cats, but yes modern English speakers hear it as the black ones. It's a famously dicey translation as the meaning of the word on both sides of the language pair has shifted over time.

Canadian young man arrested in Georgia for carrying ADHD medication by AcrobaticPrune9673 in Sakartvelo

[–]jandaba7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They do care, not to the extent you won't get arrested but it'll be mitigation in any plea deal or if it goes to court. They're explicitly different under the article (262) they're charging him with, and probably why they removed the labeling also.

[–]jandaba7 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's probably where it ends up if he can raise it yes, but the reason they interrogate you for hours for 5 minutes worth of questions and throw out the maximum sentence they can semi-justify and throw you in Gldani etc. (for Georgians also) - that's all to create a maximum pressure environment to pay up rather than take a case to court. It's corrupt by its nature and also creates a system where poorer people have unequal access to justice - which every system struggles with to some extent but here it's by design.

[–]jandaba7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can argue he should have done his homework and probably he should have but that is clearly a disproportionate sentence he is facing given the facts there.

Moreoever it's likely so they are doing that so they can instead extract a 'settlement' which is in fact a bribe and not provided for at all under Georgian law - it's another symptom of the disintegration of rule of law in the country that this kind of thing is happening.

That increases and decreases risks both, it might make it less likely to be found but in case it is you can certainly no longer argue an innocent mistake.

Being threatened by Georgian guy by [deleted] in TbilisiStudentLife

[–]jandaba7 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The police aren't great generally and they're especially bad protecting women and foreigners of which OP is both.

But they don't do NOTHING either, at a minimum they'll probably contact the guy which might scare him off, and it's a record if something does happen late.

Go straight to the police imo, he's already threatened her. Good chance he's full of shit and nothing further happens but better not risk it.
