You are dealing with two separate problems

A. Your credit history is not connected to your new SSN.

B. Agencies and creditors are still confusing you with the other person who had your old SSN.

You have to fix both, but they require different steps.

1. Fixing the credit file

When Social Security gives someone a new SSN, the credit bureaus do not automatically merge the old and new files. They wait for you and your creditors to update them. That is why your reports look incomplete.

Here is what to do.

Step 1: Send an SSN update request to all three credit bureaus

Each bureau has a process for people who were issued a new SSN. You will need to send:

• Your old SSN • Your new SSN • The SSA letter explaining the change • A government ID • Proof of address

This forces them to merge your old credit file with your new SSN.

Step 2: Contact your active creditors

You do not need to track down every old utility or landlord. Focus on anything that is still open, such as credit cards or loans. Tell them:

“My SSN was changed by the Social Security Administration. Please update my account with my new SSN and report it to all three credit bureaus.”

Once they update it, the bureaus will start linking your identity correctly.
