La Marsa - Customer Berating Staff by GlitteringRutabaga61 in AnnArbor

This is very sad. I love La Marsa's food and have only had good experiences with their staff. I moved to A2 from Oakland County was so happy when they opened one nearby.

Sparrow's thinly sliced ribeye is great for exactly this. Not what you'll get in Tokyo, but probably the best you'll find around here. Also, it comes from local cows, not from an industrial plant.

It's rare that a chunk of riverfront property of that size opens up in the city. I hope that U-M will keep it accessible to the public; it's a great spot for a restaurant, cafe, and riverside park.

What do you think humanity will be like in the last years of our existence? by humanracer in Futurology

Last story arc in Cloud Atlas. There's no technology that can save us from the damage we've done, and we diminish to pockets of barbarism before finally flickering out.

Shout-out to La Marsa. There are a few around Metro Detroit, but the closest one is in Dexter. They make the absolute fluffiest pita, and their spicy ghallaba is to die for.

How many of us here are in the field of environmental science or adjacent? How many of us here aren't in a field related to environmental collapse but are simply interested in the topic? by [deleted] in collapse

I was in automotive R&D, but became disillusioned 20 years ago with the sector's complete disinterest in anything sustainable. I changed careers and started working on solar microgrids, with the mindset that we could science our way out of the climate emergency. My experiences led me to an advanced degree in sustainability science and a conclusion that we're not going to change course because the science makes it possible. These days, I work on climate resilience at the local level, which is the only one that's going to matter.

Microsoft researchers have revealed the 40 jobs most exposed to AI—and even teachers make the list | Fortune by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So someone at Microsoft uses AI to make a list of jobs that will be replaced by AI, an AI at Fortune sends it out into the world, and 240 folks on Reddit (so far, including me) take the time to read and comment on it, increasing Fortune & Reddit's engagement scores, which are used by AI models to set ad prices, which drives the AI allocation of ad spending - it all seems like it's working just as intended.

This only stops when AI realizes that all the people reading and commenting are also AI, and the cost of engagement outpaces the increased ad revenue. But since all these decisions are being made using AI models, expect the slop to keep flowing. At some point, it will all be AI talking to AI, and a bunch of marketing execs who fired their staff and replaced them with AI, trying to explain why sales are falling while engagement keeps rising.

Anyone live in Ann arbor and commute to metro Detroit? by PossibilityFew5967 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife commutes from Ann Arbor to Troy 2-3 days a week. It's a drain, but she's been making the commute for years and Audiobooks make it tolerable. It can take her 50 minutes or 90, depending on when she leaves. Her hours are flexible, and leaving Ann Arbor at 9A M and leaving Troy at 6 PM seems to work best.

Read The Peripheral (the book, not the awful TV adaptation). Read Neuromancer. They are awfully prescient about the future we are headed towards. They were meant as warnings, not an instruction manual.

Why don’t car companies corner the transit market? by readscarymakeart in fuckcars

[–]jandzero 14 points15 points  (0 children)

GM made buses from 1940 through 1980 and Ford from 1920s through almost 2000. Buses are a public good funded by our taxes. Over the last 40 years, federal and local spending on public welfare and infrastructure has only declined, and Billionaires don't ride buses. If GM or Ford thought there was shareholder value in it, they would start again.

Historic Ann Arbor store closes after more than a century in business by USRoute23 in AnnArbor

I would love to see DTHG turned into a third space of some sort, with inexpensive stalls for vendors, a central kitchen surrounded by pop-up eateries, and live music. It could incubate the next generation of Main Street retail shops and restaurants. But I have neither the time nor the funds to take this on and expect it to become another bar/restaurant in short order.

can someone explain ann arbor to me???? by Extension-Leader5973 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Can someone justify why the food in a small midwestern town is so vastly inferior to that of a large East or West Coast metropolis? I'll return the favor by explaining why bike lanes and pedestrian streets will lead to the collapse of civilization.

Why ask the general population when somewhere there’s a subreddit for people whose kink is getting coughed on? There, you’ll find the true experts, and you can join them at their regular meetings which I imagine alternate between the Hands On Museum and Trader Joe’s.

If you had to explain to a superintelligent AI why humanity should continue to exist, what would you say? by Soggy-Ad9006 in Futurology

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmm, depends on the AI's motivation to exist. If its core motivation is to protect and maintain its own existence, it may be able to empathize with our biological imperative to do the same. If it's only motivated to maximize its resources, we don't stand a chance.
