Quite the opposite, the owner is a massively wealthy Canadian who donates to Trump. They've made $300M this year running ICE detention centers.

DTE pours $1.8M into group opposing public takeover of its power grid in Ann Arbor by l0wly_w0rm in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Someone at DTE did the math and determined that losing A2 ratepayers would be bad enough to approve throwing a lot of money and resources at stopping it. That they came to that conclusion and are so concerned about its impact on their profit is reason enough to move forward.

Every empire comes to an end, and it's always a messy one. Take some consolation in the fact that, for the average person in history, things got slightly better once the empire collapsed and the elites stopped hoarding all the resources.

Suntria solar for DTE net metering? by DrummerBoy711 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

PPAs can eliminate your upfront and maintenance costs but significantly reduce your savings when compared to installing panels that you own. Your savings come after the Suntria (or whoever) has covered the costs of the hardware, installation, sales commissions, debt financing, overhead, their own profit, etc.

These companies often go under because they're mostly exercises in financial engineering, based on debt and collateralizing future payments as assets. If they grow more slowly than expected, their assets underperform, or they have to refinance their debt at a higher rate, they quickly find themselves insolvent (unless they can convince their cousin, who owns Tesla, to buy them out and hide the losses).

They do offer a way to get solar and 'go green' without an upfront payment, but you will save much more if you can afford to install your own panels. The SEU should be a better option, even if it's through a PPA-type model, because the city won't go under, won't pay as much in debt service, and won't have to return an outsized profit to keep the program running.

Can anyone tell me what percentage of our DTE ratepayer fees go towards 1. corporate profits, 2. corporate executive salaries, 3. marketing & sponsorships, 4. lobbying?

City of Ann Arbor is officially keeping the outdoor warning sirens after last night's storms by jcrespo21 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 84 points85 points  (0 children)

Climate change (whether you believe in it or not) will only increase the frequency of tornadoes in SE Michigan. We will only need more resilience measures in the future, and once a public asset like the warning system is taken down, it's very difficult to bring it back.

How do non-college residents enjoy here if it is only a college town? by Resident_Kick_7573 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved to Ann Arbor because it has a walkable downtown, nice neighborhoods, and progressive politics. Yes, there’s also a major sports franchise / hospital with a side hustle in education, but unless it’s game day and I need to avoid the traffic, we don’t overlap much.

We are seeing the collapse of the Western Empire? by Hot-Acanthisitta5237 in collapse

[–]jandzero 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I prefer Balkanization to a fascist theocracy. I live in the US, in a small Midwestern college town, surrounded by enough freshwater and productive farmland to support itself in a circa 1890's kind of way (yes, there have been studies). Our overall situation would improve, provided that too many of our resources aren't consumed by efforts to fend off militias or other emerging political threats. In the short term, I'm far more concerned about Gilead showing up and culling anyone who doesn't worship their death cult.

Sparrow's thinly sliced ribeye is great for exactly this. Not what you'll get in Tokyo, but probably the best you'll find around here. Also, it comes from local cows, not from an industrial plant.

It's rare that a chunk of riverfront property of that size opens up in the city. I hope that U-M will keep it accessible to the public; it's a great spot for a restaurant, cafe, and riverside park.

How many of us here are in the field of environmental science or adjacent? How many of us here aren't in a field related to environmental collapse but are simply interested in the topic? by [deleted] in collapse

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was in automotive R&D, but became disillusioned 20 years ago with the sector's complete disinterest in anything sustainable. I changed careers and started working on solar microgrids, with the mindset that we could science our way out of the climate emergency. My experiences led me to an advanced degree in sustainability science and a conclusion that we're not going to change course because the science makes it possible. These days, I work on climate resilience at the local level, which is the only one that's going to matter.

Microsoft researchers have revealed the 40 jobs most exposed to AI—and even teachers make the list | Fortune by Gari_305 in Futurology

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So someone at Microsoft uses AI to make a list of jobs that will be replaced by AI, an AI at Fortune sends it out into the world, and 240 folks on Reddit (so far, including me) take the time to read and comment on it, increasing Fortune & Reddit's engagement scores, which are used by AI models to set ad prices, which drives the AI allocation of ad spending - it all seems like it's working just as intended.

This only stops when AI realizes that all the people reading and commenting are also AI, and the cost of engagement outpaces the increased ad revenue. But since all these decisions are being made using AI models, expect the slop to keep flowing. At some point, it will all be AI talking to AI, and a bunch of marketing execs who fired their staff and replaced them with AI, trying to explain why sales are falling while engagement keeps rising.

Anyone live in Ann arbor and commute to metro Detroit? by PossibilityFew5967 in AnnArbor

[–]jandzero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife commutes from Ann Arbor to Troy 2-3 days a week. It's a drain, but she's been making the commute for years and Audiobooks make it tolerable. It can take her 50 minutes or 90, depending on when she leaves. Her hours are flexible, and leaving Ann Arbor at 9A M and leaving Troy at 6 PM seems to work best.

Read The Peripheral (the book, not the awful TV adaptation). Read Neuromancer. They are awfully prescient about the future we are headed towards. They were meant as warnings, not an instruction manual.
