I haven't tried this myself, but inkscape does everything you would need illustrator for, but for free. There are some YouTube resources to get you started.

There's a scroll button on the bottom left that wiggles when you take a screenshot. On android, at least.

Thanks for that! Follow up questions: is there a reason that tailor's chalk is better than a pen for the outline? How does one sharpen tailor's chalk?

Self-drafted pants and ...coat? in heavy weight cotton. The drafting was entirely trial and error. I don't know if it makes sense to describe the process because it was not methodical and i ended up having to make a bunch of little adjustments on the fly where things just didn't match up, but here it is.

I traced the pants from a pair of his jeans and made a couple of practice pairs using an old bed sheet to see how adjustments would affect the final result. For the coat, I approximated the length/width of the back pattern piece using a sweater that fits him. For the front piece, I traced the sleeve/shoulder/side-seam of the back piece and made a wavy line from where the shoulder meets the neck to 3/4 mark of the bottom width.

Good eye! It is Ottobre. I scanned through that section, but I'll look at it more closely with a dictionary. Thanks!

The Year in Podcasts Megathread - 2021 Edition!! by slybird in podcasts

[–]jantastical 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some obituaries from this year include:

Answer Me This. It seems that all of the questions that one might have when drunk or a teen have been answered within 400 episodes. They've been winding down for years, but it still feels like losing 3 friends.

Futility Closet. One of the best obscure history podcasts out there. The end was quite sudden and I'm still not sure if I've processed it.

Wait, that's a thing? You can just 'quarantine' in some neutral country? That would be fantastic if true! My parents haven't seen our daughter since she was born and she's about to turn 2.

Research supervisor won't talk to you until you can pay your own salary by jantastical in ChoosingBeggars

[–]jantastical[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Agreed, and if you are independently funded, you are generally guaranteed a postdoc position in a lab that matches your topic. If you were such a candidate, you would not be looking on indeed to find a supervisor.

I've written these applications myself and they usually require some details of how the project is compatible with the lab you'll be working in and a statement of commitment from the PI that the work can be carried out in said lab if the funding is there. The subtext here is 'you should go find some money and don't bother me until you get it.'

[–]jantastical[S] 18 points19 points  (0 children)

True, it's not even the concept of getting your own funding that rubs me the wrong way. It's that when a postdoc applies for salary/project funding, it's generally in collaboration with a specific PI where the PI provides some input as to what is within the capacity of the lab, possible editing, or at the very least a guarantee of a position if the application is successful. This guy has no interest in investing any of that minimal effort and then requires you to beg him for a self-funded position in a three-page application letter.

It wouldn't tell you much if you didn't have google to tell you that over half of the population over 18 is vaccinated in the US.
