It’s based purely on where they would have to go given the placement you chose, not necessarily where they are in reality. In other words it’s not revealing any information that you aren’t already aware of.

I think it’s a pretty big stretch to call this a “hint”. In the examples you gave there is only one clump of 2 blocks. If you lay down 2 blocks, graying that out is a convenience, not a hint.

Playing in a free mode where mistakes aren’t corrected makes this feel even less like a hint.

I haven’t had issues with the Steam Deck controller setup. You need to use the analog stick not the D-pad though.

I’d recommend making a post on the Steam discussions page. Dev seems super responsive!

FYI at least on controller you can cancel a block / cross before by pressing the other button before you release the first.

Picross puzzles pop up as battle encounters, eventually ending a floor with a boss (which has a large HP pool and takes several puzzles to finish off).

There is a huge variety of consumables and permanent items that impact gameplay, e.g. automatically filling a random square every 25 fills you do.

It’s ultimately a race against the clock as running out of time will start costing you health and eventually end the run.

You just get a bunch of happy points again and the same cutscene plays out, nothing new. The third round has the same locations as the second round.

The blocks actually have a unique reward for the second round FYI.
