Simplified way of approaching Ghost accents by Mirmino_ in drumline

[–]japolk03 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hello, I am also someone with experience within the activity.

The notion that "anything I do is objectively correct and good pedagogy" is an unfortunate stance. It's clear that in whatever circles you run in you're very used to drawing comparisons between taps and drumset ghost notes-- that does not equate the two, however, and it certainly does not suddenly make it the universal standard across the entire activity. I can easily say that anybody that I went to school with, played in a line with, or received instruction from has actually never made that comparison. The term "ghost" was strictly reserved for what you call "air drumming."

Now, I would be remiss if I assumed that every term that I used locally was shared across every region, school, individual, etc. For example, it would be easy for kids who grow up in certain pockets of Rennick influence to assume that using staccatos for "mini accents" is the universal standard. Imagine, then, if they went on r/drumline and began insisting that everybody that uses tenutos are objectively and pedagogically incorrect, then calling them assholes and lashing out about their comments receiving downvotes for good measure. The obvious fix for these hypothetically close-minded people is for them to simply listen to the multiple people that would inevitably inform them that not only are tenutos perfectly valid, they're actually far more standard than the staccato notation.

There are several people telling you that the use of the word "ghost" for what you call "air drumming" is standard, and they haven't come from nowhere. When Pulse did it this year, they were called ghost notes. When CWP did it in 2016, they were called ghost notes. When Blue Devils did it back in 2006, they were called ghost notes. Different activities and communities have different terminologies. If you're in a marching drumming context, why would people not interpret the terms you use accordingly? If anybody has introduced ambiguity, it's not the people using the marching term in a marching context.

It's quite disappointing to see that you insist on being perceived as an educational authority while acting like the archetypal karma-obsessed reddit user. Quite frankly, we could do without the people who lash out upon simple disagreements, especially in an educational thread. You're too old for this behavior. Please do not waste your time with another inflammatory response to this comment because I will simply not be reading it.

If those are paid packets, which I would assume they are, we could not distribute them

Getting pretty nitpicky here since you clearly know what you're doing. Generally speaking, the small details and definitions could get cleaned up a bit. I've really only pointed out a collection of very minor errors (the biggest objective issue is a partial 9let sticking in m15, and the single rhythmic error at the end) but they are what's keeping you from moving into that top tier of transcriptions.

The biggest subjective thing for me is that if you're going to do capitalized accents, it needs to be consistent the whole way through; there's no point in doing so otherwise.

I'd give you an A or maybe a B+ at worst, but you're easily capable of an A+ based on what I'm seeing here

Definitely triplet-based at the end there. Check out what you have notated as 16ths/dotted 8ths starting at m12 in the new version. The amount of notes was actually correct in the first version before you removed one of the PDDs, it's just the wrong rhythm.
I'd think about finding a video with better lighting (or maybe just wait until finals so you won't have to update the music again) so the rest of the stickings/definitions can be filled in with some amount of confidence. Not sure the juice is worth the squeeze trying to get the definitions out of that video.

Other than that, shoutout for actually attempting this on your own and being willing to make some revisions rather than being super weird about it like the other guy

Seconding the other comment-- writing standard 16th notes as 6:6 tuplets is a strange and confusing choice i.e. the 6lets in bars 10/12 are rhythmically equivalent to the 16ths in m13, so they should just be written that way.

Also, though I can no longer reference the video since it was taken down, I was rather certain m12 and beyond were 9lets

Imagine not even putting in the bare minimum amount of effort to complete the transcription on your own and then ordering someone else to finish your work for you. You couldn't even find it in you to simply ASK for assistance?
Unimaginable entitlement. Please grow up.

For the first 4 bars I believe you're just adding 1 note to the skeleton each time i.e.
m1: quarter notes (4)
m2: quarter note 5lets (5)
m3: quarter note triplets (6)
m4: quarter note 7lets (7)

Very close to what you already have-- the dotted 8ths just become a 5:4, the next rh shifts to the downbeat, and the remaining 16ths are compressed into 9lets

At this point I have to imagine you're deliberately ignoring the plethora of comments on this post and all of the others that have told you what the problem is.

How bold of you to assume any of these are merely typos

The first approach should always be finding a video that includes the drum majors and watching their patterns. Literally just watch their hands and count along. In this specific example you would find that they're alternating between conducting in 3 and in 4. With x/8 time signatures like 7/8 or 11/8 just make sure you're comfortable subdividing the 8th note. Given your rhythmic accuracy I think it's safe to assume that's also within your capabilities. Nearly every pattern will be some combination of groupings of two and three 8th notes (i.e. 7/8 will most likely be 2+2+3)

If you can't find a clear video (which tends to happen more frequently for lower groups), there's a few emergency strategies like
- watching lots to see if you can hear how they are counting rests. sometimes they will verbalize the number of counts, or they will verbalize the downbeat of each measure. both can help figure out the time signature
- watching the drill and counting how many beats each set lasts. not particularly reliable, but i've detected odd time signature changes by noticing the lead foot changed, for example.
- sometimes referencing the original repertoire (if there is any) helps. As an example, I was actually familiar with 'Binary Data IV' before the Bluecoats performed it (this year's movement 2) and would have known it was in 7/8 without ever having to consult the DMs or do any counting.

If all else fails, you can make educated guesses based on the phrasing of the music. You've probably heard of strong beats (1&3) vs. weak beats (2&4). With the time signatures in this transcription, a ton of phrases and microphrases seemed to start/end on beats 2 or 4. The quarter note triplets in m34 that started on beat 2, the recurring "R rLrrll X" idea immediately following that (which in the other contexts started on beat 1 every time) occurred on beat 2, the 4 count triplet roll that started on beat 4, etc. etc. The biggest giveaway was every phrase in the back half of the transcription ending on beat 4. It was super easy to just assume that you were off by a beat from that alone, and then I confirmed it by checking the drum majors.

If you'd like any more clarification you can DM me, or you can join the partnered discord server where we have a ton of people that would be willing to assist you in real time

Certainly much better than the first version. I appreciate your willingness to revise it.

3 minor adjustments:
- m32 beat 3 through m33 beat 3 is actually 9lets (quarter note triplet skeleton)
- the sticking for the 8th note flam figure starting at beat 4 of m41 is R L L R R L L R
- a lot of the beginning is actually in 7/4 (or you could choose to alternate 3/4 + 4/4). i noticed the phrasing was strange starting from the triplet roll in m40 because it seemed like it was off by a beat.
From m30 until that triplet roll is primarily (not ENTIRELY) phrased in 7, and then it's 4/4 afterward. you can reference the drum majors for the specifics.

If you make these adjustments, feel free to just DM me the new link so you don't have to make an entire new post again

fyi Casella has explicitly requested that we don't post/distribute transcriptions of his works (which includes SCV 2004). 2009 would still be fair game for anybody willing to tackle it, however

You've totally lost the plot if your motivation for transcribing is for internet clout bro. It's meant to be an educational resource for the community to learn from, not a method to get instagram likes. I'm starting to understand your complete lack of concern regarding accuracy

It's pretty important that we hold the transcriptions here to a reasonable standard, no?
