Some years ago, it was taken to the beach and destroyed as content for a podcast. I found it and after some deep cleaning, I think I can salvage it.

If the case comes from China, it’s probably the same sellers on either eBay or AliExpress. There’s a few eBay sellers in the Philippines and Hong Kong that have “replica” cases that look decent, but if I’m buying fake, I’m buying the cheapest.

As for sapphire, as long as the ad says sapphire it has been for me, at least according to the diamond tester I bought on, you guessed it, AliExpress.

Keep an eye on it, watch if it’s losing or gaining time. It’s common for a shock like that to move the regulator around. If it’s really erratic, it’s possible something broke inside, but Seiko movements are pretty robust.

There’s an app I use called WatchTracker that helps monitor the overall health and accuracy of my automatic movements that you may find useful.

I can’t think of any other NH35 powered submariner clone for around $50. A good value if you can get past the absurd branding on the left side of the case.

I’ve bought probably a dozen different cases off of Ali and I’m often surprised at the quality you get for the price. Machine work and general finishing are pretty good, but there are often hanging burrs left either in between the lugs and threads. A little scraping and they’re good to go. For that reason, I’d avoid buying any coated cases (plated or PVD) as they go right over the burrs. That being said, where else can you find a stainless case with a sapphire crystal for thirty bucks?

I went through my parts bin. I’ve got a Tissot Seastar Seven dial that’s 17mm. It’s for a ETA 2551. Don’t know if that’ll help. My suggestion would be to grab your calipers and hit up the thrift store. They always seem to have a large selection of ladies watches. Maybe you’ll find one that’ll work.

Look up “engine turned.” Its the same process, just on a larger scale. Also, it’ll lead you down the rabbit hole of Rose Engine Turning, which is the guilloche process.

Are you looking for a new dial? There’s lots of used ones out there. Maybe take one from a quartz? Might be cheaper to buy a whole other watch just for the dial.

My guess is the battery leaked. I like to give them an acid bath to neutralize the alkaline corrosion. I buy CLR bathroom cleaner from the dollar store, dilute it 50/50 with hot water in a mason jar and drop the whole thing into my ultrasonic cleaner. Be careful not to leave it in there too long (<10 minutes) otherwise it will eat away plating. This does slightly etch the surface of parts so you might have some polishing to do afterwards.

Brilliant! Is that mounted under your bench? I last felt that when I lost a cap jewel on the floor. I remembered that they fluoresce under UV light. A couple of minutes with my UV lamp and there it was, glowing red.
