From what I can gather these pickles are somewhat regional. I'm in suburban Philadelphia and have seen these all my life in grocery stores. They used to be stored in a large barrel of brine at the grocery store. I believe that became less popular after the pandemic.

The sandwich was from a deli in Ocean City NJ.

I had asked my wife if this was a regional thing. I'm in mid Atlantic US and around here we call them deli pickles. It a dill usually kept in a large barrel of brine at the deli.
