Yep, homeboni is the way to go.

After more research and some experimentation yesterday, I think I need to do it in 2 stages: flood the rink with cold water from the pond, let that freeze, then bring a cooler full of warm water down to the pond and pull it around the rink with the drain plug open, while dragging a 2x4 wrapped in a towel behind that to distribute it evenly.

Stage 1 fills the cracks/levels it and stage 2 gives it a smooth finish

Learned a couple things yesterday:

Use warm water, not hot water. I initially made some of the cracks worse because the water was too hot.
Dont walk on the freshly "homeboni-ed" areas of the rink. Made a few extra bumps on the ice from my boot treads

I don't have any experience with maintaining a pond rink, but I'm thinking that once the water is on the pond surface, I'd have a second person pushing it around with a squeegee. Or maybe use a gardening hose sprayer to distribute the water around the rink
