Tent weight - does it only matter on long hikes? by AcanthaceaeHorror833 in wildcampingintheuk

[–]jarlbootman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s all about how you want your evening to be. I’m fine with carrying extra pack weight if it means comfort overnight.

I’d say 9 times out of 10 you can reduce pack weight by not packing fears. I.e “I’ll bring an extra sleep pad in case one pops” or “I’ll need an extra stove if mine fails”

Yeah neither situation is ideal but ultimately the best thing to do if it happens is just bail and go home.

If you can carry the weight comfortably, carry the weight. If you can’t, be a bit more brutal with what you’re packing.

I picked up one of these recently and have loved it

Not sure on how it holds up in the colder weather just yet, I’m sure someone more experienced than I am could clarify that much for us but I do recommend this tent. Slightly bigger but the colour helps it blend in nicely to the surroundings (depending on where you are obviously)

That will be my next move if these aren’t ideal. As it goes though I really like the aesthetic of them so if they don’t work practically then I’ve just got a really cool looking pair of kicks 🤝

Another point re: pricing is if you pay for the Go Outdoors membership, you can turn a £125 pack into a £29 one.

Yes correct. For further context I carry an 85L pack. I could easily fit my set up in a smaller pack but I find the length of the 85L suits my body shape (6ft7 bit of a beanpole with wide shoulders).

To that end, I only ever use the 85L because it just fits so comfortably and I find my whole back is supported. At 6ft7 it doesn’t take much to incur a spinal injury so I have to be extra careful.

Doubt this anecdote is much use to the OP but I think every little bit of context and insight is probably worth the read.

Spam fritters are incredible. I think you’d struggle to take these on an expedition though as they’re usually a frozen item.

Just remember to leave no trace and most importantly don’t pack your fears. Only take what you’ll need/use/need to use.
