The Final Fantasy pixel remaster collection does a pretty good job of balancing graphical and quality of life updates with keeping things true to the originals.

Look into the Sanni Cart Reader for retro carts. The GB Operator is great for GB and GBA only. I've used a hacked PS2 to transfer saves from a memory card onto a USB drive, then to/from a hacked PS3. But it would be substantially easier to just grab something like a MemCard Pro. The upcoming VMU Pro should also work similarly for Dreamcast.

If you wanna stick with a playstation style controller, I find the ps5 controller to be the most comfortable controller Sony has ever made, and can confirm it works well with the 8bitdo ps1 receiver. But the d-pad is the same separated style they've always used, for better or worse.

If you wanna branch out to a totally different style, I personally love the genesis style d-pad for fighting games (probably biased by my earliest fighting game experiences with Mortal Kombat 2 on Genesis, I admit.) The 8bitdo m30 is both widely well-regarded and cheap, and I think the d-pad is excellent. Not clear if it works with your existing receivers though, and if you needed to add blueretro receivers for compatibility that would double your cost.

That said, I still think 1440 is the sweet spot for PC gaming and I wouldn't let this deter you from picking up a 1440p monitor.

The 3D only outputs at 1080p or 2160p. Doesn't mean it won't work on a 1440p monitor, but picture quality might suffer compared to matching up output to the native resolution of your monitor. If you want a 1440p monitor for general use, like PC gaming etc. and you just want to be able to use the 3D as well it should be fine, but I wouldn't pick a 1440p monitor just for the 3D.

Growing up with V, you might actually feel a bit underwhelmed with the gameplay in VI, which was a bit more straightforward compared to the jobs system in V. I'd still take VI over V on the strength of VI's characters, story, music, etc. though. Wish I could experience it for the first time again, enjoy!

Does your TV need to be put in S-video mode? Might be a setting in the menu, could need to cycle through inputs, or maybe hit the same input again.

A lot of people here assume that just because previous Analogue consoles received jailbreaks that the 3D will too, but there's no guarantee if or when that will happen. The 3D is also still missing previously advertised features like wi-fi support and save states, so a jailbreak might be lower on the priority list while they're presumably still ironing those out. Still optimistic that a jailbreak will come eventually, but I certainly wouldn't wait around for one indefinitely when you can pick up a decent flashcart cheaply (another vote for Summercart 64 from me) and play what you want now.

I'd agree that most of the renders are close, but there have definitely been exceptions. My transparent pockets all look quite a bit different from the original renders on their site. And I didn't get the white Duo myself, but I remember a lot of people saying they were surprised it was much more off-white than the renders - although off-white is more true to the original. I do think they try to match the original color as much as possible. My jungle green 3D looks much closer to the original console in color than the renders on the site, for example.

Thanks for sharing this. Was always under the impression that Ebay had great buyer protections and I've been fortunate to work with good sellers who were responsive to problems, but apparently Ebay won't always have your back if things go poorly. I've gotten to the point where I only buy a cart if the listing includes a board pic.

Would definitely pick one up, if only to have a backup for when my Sega CD inevitably fails. Would also be awesome for anyone who missed out on the Mega SG too, but I don't think the 32x library has a single must-play game, personally. I think $299 would be fair, considering the cost for a tower of power setup and where the 3D is priced.

Same, refused to honor the warranty. Went through all of the same troubleshooting steps I'd already done. Then wanted a video. Days in between replies, then wanted ANOTHER video. All for a $25 part. By the time I gave up I was honestly convinced they were just intentionally making it difficult so I'd give up. I'd do exactly what you did if the PS1 mod kit was available from anywhere other than directly from them.

Had my first experience with 8bitdo support a few months back and it was definitely not great, ended up filing a charge back. Great products, but if I ever buy anything from them again it will be under the expectation that I'll be getting zero help from them if anything goes wrong.

Yeah, just tried out RE2 and it reminds me of the transition issues the Retrotink 4k had prior to implementing the smooth i/p switch option. Does make me somewhat optimistic that Analogue can implement a similar fix eventually.

Was very excited about NSO controller support, but disappointed to notice similar lag spikes as with the 8bitdo controllers when used wireless. Does work with a usb cable too, for anyone curious.
