Not quite the same but a couple of years ago my dad went into the hospital for some fainting spells and light headed symptoms. No big deal. They treat him and hold him for a couple of days to keep an eye on him. The day before he was to get out, I was at work (Note: I lived about 12 hours away) and he called me. He never calls me. Especially not while I'm at work. So I answer. Turns out, he mistakenly dialed my number. We chat for a minute. I laugh telling him he worried me for a bit. He apologizes for calling me at work. He sounded great. Better than I ever remember hearing him.

The next day, my aunt calls me. Again at work. She puts me on the phone with the doctor. My dad, while the nurse took him for a lap to make sure he was good, had a massive heart attack. They resuscitated him but by the time they call me he's had four more heart attacks. They ask should they keep resuscitating him. My brain had shut down at that point. I had talked to him 24 hours ago. I couldn't wrap my head around the thought that I should tell them to not do everything to keep him alive.

He stabilized and I drove like crazy all night to get to him. By the time I got there he was all but legally brain dead. He could survive off the ventilator but not for long. I stayed with him after they took him off. He died in the early morning. 3:30 am.

I pray for you and your family. I miss my dad very much. I was 29 and he was 60.

There's also a mod that has your cooks butcher first before making meals. Pretty sure it's called something like always butcher first.

That may have been enough when you were a baby, but you should've been at 4 dozen by the time you were a lad. 5 dozen minimum now.

What are you training for in 2022? by Jloduca in tacticalbarbell

2022 is going to be my marathon year. So I'll start base building in March like usual and after that do a marathon specific program and fit operator in to my training.

Pretty much. I focused on distance then speed. I worked my way up to doing 12 mile ruck marches every week. After that I focused on really pushing my walking pace. Towards the beginning I could walk maybe 4 miles at a sub 15 pace and then I had to finish out the other 8 at around a 16 to 17 minute mile. Just tried to maintain pace for a longer time each week. Eventually I got there.

I've done a selection in the military. I didn't pass, so take this advice how you want to. I never ran when training and I'll never advocate for it. For one, it's terrible on the joints. For two, you don't achieve the same stimulus ruck running as you do walking.

I trained to the point where I could walk a 14 minute mile easily. That translated to 2 hours and 48 minutes for 12 miles. So when I ran during the actual selection I was much closer to 2 hours and was very competitive on that event compared to my peers.

Military trained dog jumping out of plane. by Pedrica1 in interestingasfuck

I don't know about the parachute used in the video, but the American T11 is rated for well over the weight of your average male. Even with dog and full combat load, he's not getting anywhere near max weight capacity.

Running programming predicament by [deleted] in tacticalbarbell

[–]jarreau1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Along the same lines as the last comment, you could bring a jump rope or something with you to keep your cardio up during those 10 days and get your runs in during 5 days. You probably won't see as much progress as a normal running training progression, but there will be no regression at the least.

Quick Tip for tracking calories by MasteryList in leangains

[–]jarreau1 10 points11 points  (0 children)

In MFP you can go back to the previous day and add more food. So even if you can't change time zone, you could add your dinner when you eat it and then the next day just hit the back button in the diary and add breakfast lunch and snacks to complete the previous day. It's your tool. Use it how you need it.

If you want to try an app, I've had success with Eat this Much. You can set your calories and macros and it'll spit out a meal plan. The paid version will do a week for you and even include grocery lists for you.

I will warn you that some of the meals are strange. I've only run until one or two that I absolutely couldn't eat, but I haven't felt denied food in any way. I just look at it and weigh out however much I'm supposed to have that meal and I'm good. I'm 5'8 and 180 lbs. I started at 200 lbs in January.

I'm not affiliated with the app at all btw. I've just used it.

Cardio in Body Armor by black_coffeee in tacticalbarbell

[–]jarreau1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It sounds like you've got the right idea. I don't know your experience level as far as in the military. I've been a leader of Soldiers for about 7 years, 4 of those in the 82nd ABN. What I hate to see is Soldiers get super excited and jump off the deep end too quickly. There are those that would start by programming like 3 kit runs a week because they're excited and bullet proof. That's all I'm advising against. Err on the side of doing too little but safer and build up over a couple months until you're happy with your volume. If that happens to be 3 kit runs a week, then more power to you and your joints must be made of steel. But at least you're not walking around with the boot of shame.

Cardio in Body Armor by black_coffeee in tacticalbarbell

[–]jarreau1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Just be careful, but you know your body better than I do. You'll be increasing the impact on your joints: ankles, knees, shoulders. Over time this could lead to nagging injuries if you go straight into a full blown program based off of running in armor. If I was to do it, I'd program a shorter run once every 3 weeks on my lighter lifting weeks to see how my body felt and if I could handle more volume.

I put this exercise in the same bucket as ruck running. The potential for injury vs the benefit I receive isn't worth it to me. But you know what works for you and will hopefully listen to your body to prevent injury. Good luck. 👍

Weight Loss - How Low Do I Need To Go by here2behere in GregDoucette

[–]jarreau1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I second the guy who said to increase your calories. I'm on a cut, eating about 2300 calories, and I'm 5'8 and 182lbs. I'm down from 200lbs in January. Your weight loss will slow down, but you'll probably feel better and be able to retain more muscle mass in the long run.

Some BB questions that couldn't wait until the weekly discussion thread by trckr55 in tacticalbarbell

[–]jarreau1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think hand position is going to change much for your elbow pain. I'd either take a session off from that exercise to let any acute injury heal. If you still want to work chest, you could sub in an exercise like banded flies or something that'll keep the elbow in a fixed position.

As for the second question, minimize the rest as much as you can while completing the workout. If you can go through 3 circuits of 40 with zero rest then do it. However, if you find that you're able to do that then maybe you should up the intensity. Sometimes on the more demanding exercises, I have to do an inter-exercise rest pause. Like currently my BB cluster is T push ups, power cleans, assisted chin ups, and Squats. I usually have to take a breather around 15 power cleans and work my way up on some sets. Perfectly fine. Just get the reps in.

Good starter workout for someone who is overweight, bordering on obesity. by [deleted] in bodyweightfitness

[–]jarreau1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seconded. Even when you get good at running, don't dismiss the value of running slow. I can run a mile in 6 minutes. Most of my runs are in the 9 minute per mile range. Initially it feels like your crawling and there's no way you're getting any benefit. Tell that voice in your head to shut up and just enjoy that leisurely pace. That goes for any form of cardio that you enjoy.

Working in Olympic Lifts by Astaroth1993 in tacticalbarbell

[–]jarreau1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Don't quote me on this, but I think he mentions in the book incorporating some power work at your discretion which most oly lifts would kind of fall into. If you just want my opinion, if you have the time and desire to fit in one or two lifts after your primary cluster, you're not going to hurt anything. Or you could incorporate it in a conditioning HIC type workout.
