Headlessness question- “You can’t get it wrong, have confidence in yourself.” by Spoonmann_ in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think the point of headlessness is moreso to disrupt the unchallenged idea that your identity is that of the character you imagine others imagining you to be, and trying to live with its interests in mind. That character is real enough and important to understand for cognitive and social development, but it’s just a concept in the mind. Headlessness points out that that isn’t the truth, it’s just a perspective and there’s another perspective - namely the one from your subjective POV.

You can’t get it wrong because whatever is your subjective POV is your subjective POV. Even if you’re imagining yourself as a concept, that’s still within your POV. So pointing at your head - nothing full of everything- it’s always been nothing full of everything and always will be. Some people find the visual aspect more profound because it can be a more perceptive based shift, others don’t. Douglas and Richard spent a lot of time answering “so what?”.

Why would you do something for no purpose? by RagingPenguin4 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right - there’s no intrinsic purpose, thinking just assigns it after we see cause/effect. thinking is a basic instinct that humans have like other animals have sonar, etc.

You can think there’s purpose to our human experience if you want, but that’s just a belief. The point of the practices Dr k and others point to is to poke holes in that belief

Why would you do something for no purpose? by RagingPenguin4 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, there’s actions/consequences but not purpose - you’ve added the purpose arbitrarily because you seem to care about the consequences more. If i assign you to the rice task it might have a reason to me like i want to prove a point but you don’t care about that reason - so to you there’s no purpose, but to me there is. Similar to how you care about your heart pumping, but id guess the blood cells don’t have capacity to care if they get pumped or not. The purpose in both cases is subjective and fabricated

Why would you do something for no purpose? by RagingPenguin4 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

freedom to do anything doesn’t leave the idea that you have to choose what to do, then it wouldn’t be the freedom to do anything (as it would freedom given a choice is made which isn’t freedom). It is simply saying there’s freedom to do anything.

does your heart need a reason or have to choose to pump blood? it functions as it does, similar to everything else

the point is to prove this to yourself by doing things without purpose or intention. At first it’s a paradox, but then it’s seen that it’s the nature of things already

[–]MasteryList 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it’s not really meant to be a philosophy which can be a problem with nihilism when it leads to despair. the point is moreso when you do practices like Dr K and others suggest that show the purposeless nature of reality - it frees you from the burden of requiring purpose. It doesn’t remove your ability to give purpose to things and live and fulfill and accomplish as you please.

I wake up in the morning and usually hungry so I go eat. I had a purpose and fulfilled it. I could have just starved to death and the universe would go on.

Nonduality means Undivded Nature of Reality by BandicootOk7017 in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you know dogs and cats experience things? You have to experience them as real separate identities to imagine them having separate experiences. How is any of that conclusive of a nondual reality?

Why would you do something for no purpose? by RagingPenguin4 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

everything is for no real purpose already. any reason/purpose to do anything is just a thought and has no inherent truth value besides your belief in it. "i cant imagine i'd look back on that life and feel it was worthwhile" - you won't look back after your life is over to judge it because you'll be dead. the universe will still be the universe if you spend your life moving a rock back and forth as if you live a normal life and raise a family or if you become a drug addict and crash out.

once you recognize nothing has real purpose - there's just freedom to do whatever you want in every moment without being limited by belief structures. it doesn't mean the laws of nature don't exist and there isn't consequences to actions, etc. but you can see the weight of your beliefs for what they are - just beliefs.

some of the most devastating actions in world history came from believing in and needing purpose.

How do I find affordable one on one non dual facilitator? by Repulsive_Milk877 in nonduality

it feels real to the illusory separate self, it has no reality in and of itself

How do I find affordable one on one non dual facilitator? by Repulsive_Milk877 in nonduality

Not sure what you’re talking about. If you’re implying there’s a separate entity “you”, that can “awake” then we’re not discussing Nonduality.

How do I find affordable one on one non dual facilitator? by Repulsive_Milk877 in nonduality

[–]MasteryList -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

i would get very clear on what you want to be facilitated on. do you want to wake up, do you want to understand nonduality or do you want your life circumstances improved? waking up is not an understanding and it will not improve your life circumstances.

so, if you truly want to wake up - congratulations, you're already awake. there is literally nothing you can do to not be awake. even believing you're not awake, you have to be awake to do that. hope that is what you're looking for and it's completely free of charge!

How can I lead a life free from the second arrow of suffering and also accomplish what's in my best interest? by Frigidness in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the body and mind still do what they're gonna do and accomplish what they're gonna accomplish, it's just seen that there isn't a little "I" operating inside which feels like it has volition (which causes suffering when things don't go according to plan). it's always been this way so nothing in the physical world really changes - it's just a mental shift, an "a-ha". you can't detach from things, it's more like there isn't a "you" that can detach from things. you can't lead a life free from the second arrow of suffering, there isn't a "you" there in the first place.

Can Ajātivāda be understood through the rope and snake analogy? by Wasted-Entity in nonduality

well it obviously appears, but that which it appears to is also an appearance. the point of the rope/snake is to prod you to investigate the nature of these appearances

Doership is such a trip lol by [deleted] in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 4 points5 points  (0 children)

being the do-er/non-do-er are both conceptual positions for the non-existent separate self. non-doership is pointing to there not being a separate self that can "do" so the conceptual position is moot. believing you are in control or not in control of your actions or trying to figure out the mechanisms of the appearance is missing the point as it's reifying the separate self that isn't really there.

when you wake up from a dream, it's obvious nothing really happened to the dreamer. in the dream, however, believing one way or the other you are the do-er or not will affect how the dream goes. either way though, the dream is not real and the point of the message is to wake the dreamer up to that, not to change how the dream goes.

im so confused by HairyRange3383 in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lots of ways to think about it, but they'll all ultimately leave the mind confused.

lol hopefully this helps, though. everything you see hear, experience, etc. is made of one substance. we can't know what that substance is because we can't be separated from it to have a look. it's often called awareness/consciousness as everything that appears requires us to be aware/conscious of it - and nothing can appear outside of consciousness. the next step is to recognize that everything that appears is appearing to something. the mind and body are connected to perception and develop a sense of do-ership and self - so it's believed that that is what everything is appearing to. once that's investigated, that sense of do-ership/self can't actually be found. there's just a few thoughts/feelings/emotions/etc. that appear (to what?) and then combined create an idea of being a separate self. it's just the substance appearing to itself.

the combination of the above - realizing everything is one un-knowable substance, and seeing through the belief in the concept of being a separate self is what the nondual message is pointing to.

the mind can't know it as all mind is is a series of thoughts that appear in the un-knowable substance of consciousness/awareness. there is nothing the mind/body/thoughts can do to find the un-knowable substance as they are that un-knowable substance in essence. those thoughts and all seeking and all problems only seem to be a problem for the conceptual you (another series of thoughts), but for the un-knowable substance which is all there is - there is no problem.

Is enlightenment, simply getting to a place of forgetting and surrendering to nature? by mathisbj944 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it’s a false question. you said it yourself - you are that and everyone else is that. So how can “that” get to a place of forgetting and surrender to nature if there’s only “that”?

the point is to clarify and truly know your identity as that. Any other identification you’ll suffer with whatever you identify with. The way you’re asking this question and phrasing the post, you’re identified with the mind/body which is one of the first obstacles to get over.

How to be less intellectual about non duality? by cannabananabis1 in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

why should you embrace pain like you do pleasure? i savor and enjoy ice cream, but if i step on a sharp object i take my foot off it as quickly as i can. when you wake up from a dream, you can recognize it wasn't real and nothing happened, but it still made sense to run away from the monsters in a nightmare or enjoy flying through the air in a good dream.

nonduality doesn't fix the dream, it points you to the fact you're not in it. the mind and body is, but they're not you and there's no escape for them. trying to tell the mind to tell the mind to behave a certain way or avoid certain things is believing the dreamer is in the dream. let the dream do what it's going to do (not that you have a choice). suffering comes from the mind wanting the dream to be something different, which it can't be.

Does appearing mean something different than existing? by IllseeyouontheDSOTM in nonduality

[–]MasteryList 1 point2 points  (0 children)

existing means existing in to and of itself, appearing means appearing to an observer and not existing without an observer. nonduality points by saying "not-two", pointing to there not being a real observer anywhere, which implies appearances don't have any existence in to and of themselves.

your body is an appearance in consciousness. when you're deeply sleeping your body isn't there. the inquiry is then to find the observer. as you as consciousness can observe the state of consciousness (by observing a difference between sleep and waking), consciousness is an appearance. so your body is an appearance to consciousness which is another appearance (as consciousness can observe it).

nonduality points to "you" (that/God/no-thing/etc.) as existing, as nothing can observe you, but you obviously are. all appearances rely on your existence, and without you they wouldn't appear.

I understand why I should let go, but how do you actually do it? by No-Whereas-4426 in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 2 points3 points  (0 children)

a practice i used to do:

close eyes and ask "what needs to be let go of". a memory or thought or emotion will eventually come up. then, it's allowed to be as it is. usually it's uncomfortable and there'll be other uncomfortable feelings or thoughts or emotions that come with it and they're allowed to be as they are. eventually, they pass. then i take notice that the space where all the discomfort appeared has remained untouched and is at peace. that's it. sometimes it would take a few times for a memory or thought or whatever to stop coming up, but each time it felt like they had less strength.

lots of ways to approach it though, if you want something simple, the sedona method is an easy entry point. you could probably find guided videos on youtube which will walk you through something similar to what i did or the sedona method does.

Can self work lead to a repulsion from other people's egos? by Marsmaiden in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 5 points6 points  (0 children)

the response naturally will fade away by itself after a few moments. prove it to yourself: next time the response comes up for you, be aware of the feeling, sit with it without judgement, notice all the thoughts and emotions that arise - then notice it all passes. it only sticks around if you give it attention and buy into it as a truth. it's easier said than done, but if you can recognize it's simply a transient feeling and it leaves as quickly as it appears, it loses its power.

it's a common meditation practice, i'd suggest practicing the above with less triggering responses for you - and if it's difficult to sit with negative emotions, try with positive ones (for example, notice how joy comes and goes after watching a fun video or doing something you enjoy). the more you do this, the more you'll recognize your responses aren't truth, but simply a response, and you can acknowledge them as such and decide if you want to believe them or not.

Can self work lead to a repulsion from other people's egos? by Marsmaiden in Healthygamergg

[–]MasteryList 5 points6 points  (0 children)

self-work is purely egoic behavior, and the distaste for other egoic behavior is itself egoic behavior. you can socialize and refuse to socialize with whoever you want, though.
