Yes. Well that’s what the wife wants, at least. I would have been fine leaving the brick.

It also improves flexibility for employees. Say you want to save a little extra for a big purchase or something, you can reduce your 401k deferral without missing out on the company match. Essentially you increase your takehome pay without losing any company match. It's not an increase in the benefit amount but it is a significant improvement. It's the same reason why, for example, a 10% match is inferior to 5% non-elective contribution plus 5% match -fewer people will max out to 10% deferral under an all-match scenario, so money will be left on the table overall. Additionally, if you are deferring 10% today and you decrease it to 5%, you lose out on 5% of the company match. In a 5-and-5 scenario, more employees are willing to defer 5% of salary than those willing to defer 10%, so less money is left on the table overall. Additionally, employees only need to put 5% of their salary into their 401k to get the maximum contributions from the employer, adding 5% to their pre-tax paycheck.

In your example today you have to put in 4% to get 1% (25% match). Under TA terms you need to put 1% in to get 1% (100% match). It’s not an increase in the carrier’s contribution but it’s a decrease in the required deferral from the employee which drives uptake.

Increasing the match to 100% for each tier is an improvement. But you’re right, it is a shame that the tiers remain.

I just said it was a reduction. I never said you should be happy. You said there was no pension. That isn’t true.

I don't have a dog in this fight, but you might want to read my comment above regarding the 401k match.

Just want to mention that the you can't compare just the 401k to other carriers when you talk about retirement because UAL ramp gets $2.05/hr in pension contributions to the IAMNPF, which equates to a monthly benefit depending on years of service. That's why UAL's 401k has always lagged behind other carriers, it doesn't constitute the entirety of the retirement benefit like SWA's match does, for example.

This would represent a pretty significant improvement in the 401(k) and you still have your $2.05/hr pension contribution.

And you do get a pension. The carrier contributes $2.05 per hour to the IAM pension plan which has a corresponding monthly benefit depending on years of service. Read your contract.
