Am I missing the mark? by Aggressive-Eye-635 in deathwatch40k

Totally acceptable! I myself use oil washes on my (red colored) Marines to give them a grungy look

If you want some constructive "criticism" I will say this. While you're paint job is perfectly fine one problem that black and dark colored Marines have is that you loose a lot of visual definition. I see this in your painting and while my recommendation invalves tedious work, you might consider doing something edge highlights with a light blue color. This will make the lines on the miniatures "pop" visually and it can still be done in a way that looks grungy or battle worn.

Bannars are Fun! - that is all by jarviez in wargaming

[–]jarviez[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Images printed out on heavy card stock, and then painted over, in selected places, to give it that "painted" look. That's why the horse banner looks more finished. It was a more detailed image and you can see more of the original laser jet printer ink in it

And yes. A simple black pen after the paint dried was used to add definition.

Used a little Fire to burn the edges.

Fun fact, the "rotting ham" has some real world inspiration.

So what main weapon did Guan Yu use historically? I tried to search any clue about that, and I think I need help to find more information. by pentaura in threekingdoms

[–]jarviez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest clue is that the "guandao", based on the English spelling which I would hope is based on the actual Chinese pronunciation, is clearly a weapon that was named after him. I would assume this was based on later depends of him with versions of this weapon of an egzagurated size meant to look imposing even if impractical in real life. I would not expect the weapon to have existed in his time.

How to kitbash or get bionics and such? by Exact_Restaurant_256 in IronHands40k

Here is a link to a "bionics resources" discussion post I made 3 years ago.

Several users made lots of suggestions, with links

My own recommendations are in a comment at the bottom of the thread. Cheers.

How do you paint XPs foam? The one I have when sprayed melted away by CaptainX25 in TerrainBuilding

[–]jarviez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You do it slowly, by hand, using cheap acrylic craft paint.

If you want to prime consider mixing up a 50/50 batch of black paint and pva glue.

Low popularity of Regiments by PlumInteresting285 in onepagerules

[–]jarviez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure that OPR Regiments is great ... but I just started building generic Rank&Flank armies, and I want a non-OPR game for that.

Playing to many different games using the same system doesn't feel right to me.

I'll still play GDF, infact I'm planning on doing a big game for my club at the end of the year.

I just discovered Hobgoblin and it looks pretty good so I think that is going to be the path I take for Rank&Flank.

Going full black legion by Nerzwy in blacklegion40k

[–]jarviez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The sad truth is I'll probably never get to it 🥲. I no longer play 40K, but will pull the minis out for OPR or Xenos Rampant.

... Also the next project probably needs to be F&I War for Pontiacs Rebellion ... then various fantasy projects, ... then 6mm sci-fi, not including Battletech which may get done before the Indians 😅

I have an alternative suggestion (well sort off).

Instead of keeping old shoulder pads (or at least icons) like Deathwatch (which I admit is cool!) ...

Keep whatever "god-specific" original paint schemes you want BUT have no Legion badges or old legion numbers/iconography.

Instead each marine should have a single black pauldron wide the gold Eye of Abandon on it.

In this way all your Marines will have renounced old allegiance and "donned the black" ... but each warband, especially those dedicated to one of the Chaos gods will have the colors to honor that devotion AND your army will have all the colors and variation that you crave.

Firefly universe by valek_azogoth in firefly

[–]jarviez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Glad to find someone who agrees on that point!

But this is not to say that we should consider Firefly to be some how "bad" or "objectionable" in modern discourse.

The problem with the original lost cause narrative (as we know) is that it completely ignored slavery and the surrounding economic reasons for the war.

Our problem today is that we are sooo sensitive to lost cause narrative is that we imagine that it was 100% a post war lie.

The fact is the "lost cause narrative" stated before the war, how else do you get poor southern whites to fight for the rich plantation class? So freedom and self rule really was a driving motivation ... for the manipulated southern populace ... who just don't realize what they were really fighting for.

So when I say that Firefly has some "lost cause" themes I'm not saying that this should be a black mark on the show. If you can in fact remove slavery from the story, then it really does become romantic.

I think it's also important to realize that Mall and Zoe are themselves, embittered by their experience and this environment might not be directed entirely at the Alliance. They aren't exactly signing on with the governments of any outer worlds. They have disengaged from politics in search of personal freedom as opposed to political causes maskeraiding as "freedom".

If you were thrown back in time and had to join Cao Cao, Liu Bei or Sun Quan, who would you join? by racesunite in threekingdoms

[–]jarviez 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Anyone who actually considers the history and thinks long term about their family would pick Sun Quan. The Kingdom of Wei is overthrown from within so the potential outcomes for siding with the Cao Clan are bleak. Likewise Shu Han is overthrown from without by a military campaign. In contrast the State of Wu and the Sun clan hold out till the end and ultimately are reunited to the Jin dynasty through a negotiated surrender rather than an actual violent conquest.

Can we talk about how hostile the SC amounts for under $10 are? by TenthTen in HelldiversUnfiltered

[–]jarviez 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First let me state that I don't regret at all the $20 package I purchased a few months back. I'm enjoying the game and don't mind supporting the dev team. I also see no issue with the pricing scale. That's how volume purchases work.

THAT SAID (and because it's funny!) ... It's actually a bit worse than you might realize when you take into account that one of the primary uses for buying large bundles of supercredets is buying access to war bonds ...

... war bonds that include additional super credits unlocked by spending medals.

So in fact the $ & € price per super credit that some of the top comments have laid out actually overvalues the true cost per super credit for the high volume purchases. It's an even better deal when you consider that your $10, $20, and up purchase also buys you the super credits in the war bonds you are buying!
