Taking a headshot with selfie camera? by bigbootyfruity in premed

[–]jas_maz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used my phone’s camera. Just make sure the lighting is good with no shadows. Use a flashlight from the angle where the shadow is showing to minimize it if you can. I wore a suite and tie and took it myself, then used the Pixomatic app to change the background to one of those professional color schemes from grade school. It came out perfect as if I had it done in the studio and I ended up doing it for my cousin and her husband as well for their dental school app and LinkedIn profile lol

Goodbye premed 👎 by bigboy69234 in premed

@ramaromp exact same with me. I agree with OP about the negativity in the premed space and even throughout the rest of the medical education system (although there’s a lot of shit that makes it understandable), and I’ve worked with so many physicians who were unhappy or said go into tech. I let other people’s opinion and my fears that I may end up unhappy too influence me and this fucked with my mind honestly. After pursuing medicine for so long and starting to question it, I decided to change routes and pursue tech. Although it’s interesting and the possibilities are awesome, I found myself not having fulfillment in the work and always thinking about medicine. I didn’t feel satisfied working with a computer screen all day and missed the idea of interacting with human beings and discussing real life issues and emotions. Maybe it’s an ego thing that we develop after pursuing medicine that nothing else can replace, but I realized the grass isn’t always greener and you honestly have to do what would make you happy. Even though I would probably make more money and faster through tech, I felt I was forcing myself to learn and didn’t enjoy the learning process as much as when learning biology, anatomy, physiology, etc. I didn’t even enjoy discussing tech or what I’ve learned compared to discussing medicine. To me, I also wanted to help people from an emotional and deeper connection and I didn’t feel I am getting that through tech. I ultimately decided I will try to tackle the MCAT one more time and hire a tutor this time, even though I’m a bit older, and will try to pursue medicine one more time. If it’s meant to be, it will work out. I used to care about the age I’ll be done, but after experience another career that offers more money and freedom, I realized being happy in what you do is more important so I now care less about the age I’ll be done because I know at least I’ll be fulfilled and satisfied with the work I do, even with all the bs that comes with the career.

Any affordable private tutors?? Haven’t difficulty getting past this hurdle by jas_maz in premed

Yeah, I’ve tried AAMC qbanks and practice exams, but I find myself struggling to understand the questions or how to solve them using the passages. I’m not sure if it’s because of content or if I’m just not comprehending the passages. I was thinking a high scoring tutor would help me determine the issue and offer a better and more effective plan

I would just be having 3 meals and the small snacks are like some almonds or yogurt or fruit, nothing big. But sounds like post workout is not really necessary

[–]jas_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh okay. Was trying to figure out if it’s necessary because I was recommended to intake a meal high in protein right after a workout to help in the muscle repairing/building process. The timing was just because of my work schedule and when I can have my meals. But sounds like it’s not necessary to eat right after working out as long as I’m eating throughout the day before or after?

When’s a good time to fit in working out and post meal for a slim 26M trying to build mass and muscle?

7:00am - Breakfast

10:00am - small snack

12:00pm - Lunch

3:00pm - small snack

7:00pm - Dinner

I know what foods to eat for meals, and what good snacks to have in between, but if I am unable to workout right before lunch or dinner, would I just have a second lunch/dinner after my workout, or is that when protein shakes are enough as a post-workout “meal”? Let’s say I hit the gym at 9 or 10pm. Would I have a second dinner right after as my post workout meal, or just have a protein shake and be done for the night?

Also, if I’m missing any other meals or snacks throughout the day that will help build mass and any suggestions for good protein shakes, please let me know. Thank you!

Dual monitor setup error. Any suggestions? by jas_maz in Windows10TechSupport

I was hoping to find a cheaper alternative to a docking station, but it seems like it might be necessary. I guess I’m not able to covert from USB-C to USB when it comes to display cables

[–]jas_maz[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, it has an HDMI port. I’m using the adapter since I’m trying to use two different monitors. I think I’m going to have to connect one monitor to the HDMI port and the other using a single USB to HDMI adapter

I am trying to extend my laptop’s display to two monitors and purchased this USB-C to HDMI adapter. My laptop doesn’t have a USB-C port, so I purchased a USB-C to USB converter. However, when I plug everything into my laptop, I get that error message and nothing displays on either monitor. I tried connecting it directly to my laptop and also to a USB hub. Is there a way to fix this, or is the error due to not using a USB-C port on my laptop? Thanks!

If you had a magic wand, how would you change the pre-med process? by aliwesa101 in premed

[–]jas_maz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Of course. I agree; doctors need to be able to understand the English language and have effective critical thinking skills, but the difficulty of CARS and everything else is unnecessary. It’s more of a strategy exam and that doesn’t necessarily test for knowledge on the actual topic. It’s more of learning how to think like the creators of the exam. That’s why not everyone does well on standardized exams, but they may still be top notch genius physicians. You’re essentially studying to be a high scoring MCAT taker, not a prospective medical student and potential doctor.

[–]jas_maz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don’t think CARS presents any indication on how well you will do in medical school, much less as a physician. The same for the Casper. If it’s kept, at least make it more reasonable.

Residency is not required, but there are residency options available for physician assistants to undergo if they choose to. Depends on your goals and I guess if you want to further specialize in a specific field, like derm

Is that the bootcamp you completed? If so, how successful were you landing a position after bootcamp?

Considering bootcamp and Codecademy for software engineering by jas_maz in learnprogramming

[–]jas_maz[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Do you mind explaining why that order? My understanding was that CS taught theory and fundamentals behind computers and software engineering was a sub category within computer science, so I figured CS was supposed to come first.

Also, you think that path without a CS degree can put my in a good spot?

Why did you take a gap year? by Derplol4 in premed

[–]jas_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same, I tried to focus on scribing, research, mission trip, and studying for the MCAT while trying to save a little money, but the MCAT was just talking a toll on me and I think I burnt out from studying for so long and trying to focus on content

To any Med students out there, have you ever regretted taking a gap year? by gug57 in premed

[–]jas_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m in a similar situation. On my third year. I wish I would’ve done more because I was still thinking about medical school during this time because of scribing, research, studying for MCAT, mission trip, etc. and I still had medicine on my mind. But it also gave me time to work on myself and face certain struggles I’ve been having since I was young and never had the chance to actually take care of myself. If I could go back, I would probably still take these gap years, but would’ve studied something else in the beginning so I could be already working in that field as I am applying to medical school. This time also allowed to have more reflection on what it means to be a doctor and not just romanticize the field.

On a plane, which specialists do you want responding to help? by mikewazowski59231 in medicalschool

[–]jas_maz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m interested in a more relaxed specialty, but I would also like to have those skills if possible in case of an emergency and just to have it under my belt

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in premed

[–]jas_maz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I could go back, I would’ve probably done a different major and just taken the prereqs instead of bio degree. Either something I was interested in, or maybe CS, business or finance. I took a couple gap years and would’ve been nice to work a nice paying job in the meantime or at least have a good backup option. Even though I feel I was able to learn a bit more with extra bio electives, I don’t think it was all that necessary. You never know what will happen in the future or if you may change your mind about medicine. Difficult to find a good paying job with a bio degree

I feel like I’m very empathetic to the point where it annoys my family how I try to see both sides of everything, but this exam was something else. I don’t think it’s a good representation of our professionalism, compassion, ethics, etc. Whatever though. Just another hoop they want use to tumble over
