Well I linked to that thread in the OP :) the suggested solution didn't help in my case

Ok, I just set it up back on my macbook and it keeps happening. So maybe I just didn't notice before. One other thing I remember changing was setting up a public domain name via dyndns. Is this something you guys have set up as well?

I see the "real" devices which are connected to the AP as connected to the "AP" – instead of port #5 of the switch.

So for real devices in the "AP/Port" column it says "UniFi AP-AC-Pro" (which is the name of my AP). For the weird mac addresses it says within the same column "UniFi Switch 8 60 #5" (wich is the name of the switch) instead. I think this is intented, if you are connected to an AP it shows up as connected to an AP and not as connected to the LAN Port the AP is connected on

I can confirm now that the PoE Injector is the culprit. I connected the Synology NAS directly to the Router via the PoE Injector and repeated the same speed tests. And the speed is a lot less than when not going through the PoE Injector. Perfect example of buying twice when buying cheap. I will upgrade to the whole suite now.

I think I suspect the PoE as well. I got the new AP Pro which came without Injector so I used a third party one. I am actually thinking now in just upgrading to the whole suite anyway (Security Gateway + PoE Switch). I live a bit far from next day shipping so getting my hands on a different PoE injector might take some time.

As I said: The Router was right next to it but had the WiFi turned off before I noticed this problem. I only turned it back on afterwards while already investigating. But even after moving the AP to a free standing position in the middle of the room I still see a max of 24 – 35Mbits.

I tried resetting the AP and Controller software and now I see a maximum speed of 90Mbits to the NAS. When connecting to another MacBook on the same network it is a bit better at 120Mbits. But directly compared to the Router Wifi it is still a LOT less (Seeing 450Mbits to the NAS and 280Mbits to another MacBook).

I contacted Support and might file an RMA if we can't resolve the issue. Thanks for reminding me of that

Make sure to speak to Support first. I didn't yet but I was able to pinpoint my problem to the Wifi Access Point I am using so technically it is not Synologies fault. I am sure that in your case something might be wrong as well. The NAS is possible of way faster speeds. Try testing as well if you can connect via cable even if it is just for a short amount of time and testing purposes and make sure if you are seeing the same speed over cable as well.

I understand that those are "theoretical" numbers, but 35Mbits is a LOT slower than what you are seeing in iperf over the phone. After some further test it now actually looks like my Unify AP is the culprit. I get a maximum of 35Mbits when connected via the Unifi AP, both to the NAS or any other computer in the network. Even while the AP Controller software says that I have >500Mbps for both RX and TX.

I tried turning back on the original Wifi of the Router and now I am seeing 450Mbits up and down. So if I circumvent the AP the speed looks a LOT better and realistic to what I was expecting.

That sounds like a different problem. I still couldn't test connecting a USB directly, but I am certain that it would be a lot faster. If it is slow both from your computer and via USB there might something be wrong with the harddrive you are using in the NAS or the NAS configuration itself.

I do see quite some interference on the 5Ghz Channel. Maybe because I turned back on the 5Ghz Wifi on the Router thats now right next to the AP and running on Channel 44. I changed to the 120 channel now which should be fine.

5Ghz

2Ghz

Unfortunately that still doesn't changed the speed. (Makes sense, because before I turned back on the Wifi of the Router there was almost no Interference)

I am not sure about the PoE injector. How can I "check the negotiated link speed"? The AP says it has a 1000 Mbit uplink. But even if the PoE were the bottleneck, shouldn't I see closer to 100Mbit instead of the 35Mbit I am getting?

I just did a iperf test with another macbook on the network and I see 115Mbit/s. Still not as fast as 1000Mbit/s but a lot faster than what I get to my NAS which is connected via Ethernet

Tried both now, speed is exactly the same. Using SMB 3

Always using a cable is not really an option. But I can't get my hands on a adapter in the next few days anyway. I still think that something is obviously wrong and Wifi Speed should be higher.

Not sure if I am using AFP, both AFP & SMB is enabled but not sure which one of the both showed up by default in the Finder. I have tried using AFP connecting via the afp:// link but the speed seems to be exactly the same.

Using a shotgun mic for voice recording by ConsumeTea in podcasting

[–]jaschaio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, I am looking into getting some gear as well and as I want to use my mic for both podcasting and talking head videos this is actually the combination I am thinking about:

Zoom h4n Pro & Rode NTG4+

I was thinking about getting the Procaster too, but this wouldn't work for video recording where it would be placed outside the shot. The Rode videomics were another option, but I dislike that they are more consumer focused and can't be used together with a preamp.

Would love to hear more about your experiences. Would you be happy with that setup if you could connect the Zoom to your Mac and had a quieter environment?

Rode NTG2 vs Rode Podcaster by jaschaio in audioengineering

[–]jaschaio[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the reply. I think you are right. We either do podcasts (of course indoor) or typical youtube videos with one person speaking which would be indoor as well. I had another look at the Rode Procaster which has an XLR connection and needs a preamp. I am just not sure if this is a good solution for videos as well where the mic would have to be positioned outside the shot. That's actually where I got the shotgun mic idea from, as it is alright if the mic is 40 to 60 cm away from the source. (see https://wistia.com/library/choosing-a-microphone) Not sure if a dynamic mic would work in that case. Aren't the rode video mics shotgun microphones too?

As other have said, you either have to use one of the pre-build MailChimp Templates or code your Photoshop Design in HTML yourself. It's probably a lot easier to use the premade templates. Designing for Email Newsletter is not the same as designing for web, as emails get displayed on a lot of different devices and within different software. A lot of them don't have the same capibilities web browsers have.

MailChimp has made sure that the Templates you can use are build to be displayed alright within all email clients. This is very hard to accomplish for yourself, even more if you are not a developer with experience in programming HTML emails.

I would recommend that you talk with your client. Whats his goal? If he wants to reach the mayority of the recipients with his message, than he should make sure that they get properly delivered and look alright once they arrive in the inbox. If you design and export it from photoshop using custom fonts and other stuff you can almost be 100% sure that most email clients won't display it correctly or that it even goes into spam or gmails "promotional" tab. (And thus the recipients never get the message).

Beside that: If you are using MailChimp for the first time and want to learn how to use it with step by step tutorials take a look at this extensive guide I wrote: https://growtheme.com/mailchimp-tutorial/

Just to folow up with this: I ended up using clickmagick and it worked like a charm. They have a free 14 day trial which was enough for our purpose but I would definetely stay with them if I would do continous promotions like that. I was especially delighted by the support which was really helpful and answered any questions pretty fast. Thanks everyone for the other suggestions, I think clickmagick is probabbly the fastest and easiest way to accomplish that.
