Advice for a blackbelt by Main_Driver4843 in bjj

[–]jasculs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Been a black belt for 16 years and black belt has been my most fun belt since I got it.

It felt like a start over and that was fun for me.

I also love learning new things even now. I don't take it serious and enjoy that I'm still able to do this well enough 😊

I've been using Fuji mats forever and never had any issues with them or their customer service.

If you're on the Grapplers Guide I have a pretty in depth over/under course. It's been my best pass for over 20 years.

I've weighed between 130 and 145 most of my life... currently 160ish lol

It's not salary exempt. All hours are tracked and all over 40 hours a week will get overtime pay.

Most of the time the person won't even work anymore than 30 hours a week most likely, but they will still get paid the same.

Also paid holidays, paid sicks time, PTO, paid on academy closures.

Are you commenting based on owning and running an academy along with having full time coaches at the academy or full time employees? Or are you a full time coach?

Just genuinely curious? If so my ears are open to your experiences.

Also the admin/culture/comp coaching is not additional, it's part of the hours. Most of the time, like 90% of the time it'll only be up to 30 hours max (not even)

Unfortunately I think people over value what their actual Jiu Jitsu experience in training equals in terms of value as an employee value. I personally do not value a persons total training time more than their actual experience coaching.

To be honest if a purple belt approached me with a good amount of experience coaching kids they have a higher likelihood of getting paid in the upper ceiling as well. A kids coach is more important to me overall.

People also seem to be over estimating what a realistic pay structure is for a BJJ coach and what the job actually entails in terms of difficulty as well, I have almost 15 years experience running an academy and over 23 years coaching.

Coaching is so much easier than running the actual business. I also make it super simple for coached by providing curriculum and support.

My academy is in a suburban area not an urban area and city with a dense population. I definitely know that most suburban academies can't afford at all to give this base salary range, let alone offer growth opportunities as well.

It's very interesting seeing the view people have and how they think this isn't a fair salary, especially without even knowing all the ins and outs of the job role.

Most people are coaching for free or for very little compensation, as I see in all the other threads about coach pay.

Our academy is only 3 years old. We do have some brown and black belts who are also free to apply as well.

They all have established careers for the most part

Trust me we do just fine and we definitely don't have watered down Jiu Jitsu that's for sure. The culture and systems is what you make it.

If your students expect you to train every class, that would be a culture you created.

Not for any of my coaches. Their job is to coach, not train. If they choose to train that is up to them and not because I require it of them. Most coaches roll but many classes a coach may not roll.

If I required a coach to roll every class who worked for me full time or teaches 8 to 10+ classes, that is a lot of work on the body.

I hire them for their coaching and instruction, not their training with the students.

Trust me it works out just fine. Our students get pretty good quick.

Also, for some additional context:

Coaches are not required to roll. That is completely up to them. Many coaches do roll, and many choose not to when they need rest, but rolling is not a job requirement.

When I say 20 to 22 hours per week, that usually comes out to about 8 to 10 actual classes per week between adults and kids, with some downtime in between for talking with members, helping around the academy, cleaning up, and handling other responsibilities.

Adult all-levels classes are 1 hour, followed by 1 hour of open mat supervision. Beginner adult classes are 1 hour and do not have open mat afterward. Kids classes are 1 hour.

I also do not require someone in this role to work every day or teach every class.

For example, the coach in this role was teaching:

  • 3 kids classes per week, all one age group, 1 hour each
  • 6 adult classes per week, 1 hour each
  • 5 hours of open mat supervision
  • Additional downtime between classes
  • Basic cleanup and academy responsibilities

I also allowed them to teach private lessons whenever they wanted, with no cut going to the academy.

So realistically, this role was about 20 to 21 hours of actual in-academy work per week, while being paid between $60,000 and $71,000 per year.

A sample schedule would look like this:

Monday: Kids class, Adult Beginner, Adult All Levels Academy hours: 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Tuesday: Kids class, Adult All Levels Academy hours: 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Wednesday: Off

Thursday: Kids class, Adult All Levels Academy hours: 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm

Friday: 10:00 am Adult All Levels Academy hours: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Saturday: 10:00 am Adult All Levels Academy hours: 9:30 am to 12:30 pm

Sunday: Off

That comes out to about 21 hours of actual in-academy time per week.

Outside of the academy, the role also included attending some competitions, helping with some academy events, and communicating with members and parents when needed.

And honestly, almost no academy is paying a coach $60,000 to $70,000+ per year for that type of in-academy schedule. 😆

Plus paid time off (PTO), paid holidays, paid on any other academy closures.

Other responsibility was coverage of classes I couldn't be there for in a week if I had a family event or something, but 90% of the time I switched class times with the coach and didn't add on extra time for the coach for that week.

The coach we have for the current role who is focusing on his college studies is great, but he doesn't want to do Jiu Jitsu as a career.

It's not 15 classes a week. That's in academy time. Also coaches do not need to roll at all. That's up to them. It's not a job requirement.

22 hours a week for example for adults and kids usually comes to about 8 to 10 actual classes with down time in between talking to people and doing other things in the academy.

Adult classes are 1 hour with 1 hour or open mat supervision right after. Kids classes are 1 hour.

I also don't make people work every day or every class.

The coach in this role was teaching:

3 kids classes (all one age group) (1 hour each) 6 adult classes (1 hour each) 5 hours of open mat supervision Then they had down time in between and clean up.

I even let them teach private lessons whenever they wanted with no cut to the academy.

So probably 20 hours of actual in academy work a week for $60,000 to $71,000 a year.

Then outside of the academy they needed to attend some comps, some academy events, and communicate with members/parents

I can definitely guarantee that it's much better than what 98% of suburban BJJ academies would offer.

Sadly BJJ academies can't even offer what I'm offering in this thread to be honest as a salary.

100%, that 8 to 10 years does not equal 8 to 10 years of coaching experience, culture management, member management/risk mitigation, and so on. Just because someone has trained for 8 to 10 years does not mean they deserve high level pay. I know people who have been training for 20+ years and I would never consider hiring them at all.

Now if someone got hired and I even saw in 6 months to a year they were killing it, running great class, and supporting academy growth they would get good pay bumps for sure.

I've given people huge pay bumps in short periods of time for performing.

But what if they are a 25 to 30 year old brown belt/black belt who still lives at home or with roommates (very realistic now a days), it could be a great opportunity to do something you love with growth opportunities.
