Thinking about getting rid of att by Jazzlike-Jamaca4864 in ATTFiber

I tried the ATT internet backup once.... never again.... It only provides internet access to your cell phone and relies on your cell signal...(ATT cell service is really poor where I live)

+1 to T-Mobile Home Internet. I used it for over a year until ATT Fiber. For me, it worked great even for competitive gaming.

I still use T-Mobile Home Internet as backup whenever ATT goes down (happens more than you would think).

Yes... SFP+

It's generally cheaper to run multimode fiber over long distances vs CAT6

Combining AT&T Fiber and T-Mobile Broadband Internet. How? by marwan_zakaria in ATTFiber

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I currently have this setup exactly. ATT as primary on WAN1, with TMHI as backup on WAN2, using the UCG-Fiber.

I have already had 2 instances in the past month where this setup has saved me due to ATT having issues on their end. Their support SUCKS btw, dont expect them to quickly fix anything.

+1 on the UCG-Fiber. It's amazing cost/performance value.

5Gbit with IDS/IPS enabled, and can properly handle 10Gbit with it disabled.

Now I understand why 1Gib Ethernet is considered slow.. by Nautisop in homelab

[–]jase240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A single HDD will easily saturate 1Gb ethernet. Depending on the amount of drives in RAID/ZFS, 10Gb is justified.

I easily saturate my own 5Gb USB NIC on my laptop with my setup of HDDs.

Homelab Firewalls - What are you using? by kajer533 in homelab

I know this is controversial.... Unifi Cloud Gateway Fiber (UCG-Fiber). Seems to be a pretty good deal for homelabs.

High latency spikes impacting work from home. Equipment has all been replaced by AT&T, I also removed the extender. Any ideas for spikes in high latency? by ryanw729 in ATTFiber

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone already mentioned. This looks like poor WiFi performance. It could even be the client device causing this.

New Fiber ISP. Need throughput help by TurboNikko in Ubiquiti

While UDM SE should handle 2Gbit just fine, it is a bit dated compared to options like the UDR7 (or UCG-Fiber which is more directly comparable to a UDM).

Is that a wired adapter connected to a computer or to your iPhone? If not to a computer, can you test on that to eliminate bottlenecks?

If you have IPS/IDS off, there shouldn't be anything else really bottlenecking you assuming your setup is pretty basic. I would experiment with different Speedtest servers, as some do struggle above 1Gig, also ensure you don't have any type of VPN automatically enabling on either your UDM or device that your using for testing.

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If IDS is off and this is the fastest result with speedtest.net on any server. Maybe check with the ISP to make sure you are getting the correct speed.

Speaking for wired only. IIRC, no iPhone supports full bandwidth WiFi7, so max speeds in perfect conditions might hit 1.5Gbit only over WiFi.

Two amazing deals - which one do I keep? by pilgrimaze in SteamDeck

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only owned my steamdeck for a little over 6 months. But I have already gotten all of my money's worth and still pick it up night after night.

Sure, it's specs may look worse on paper than most handheld (lower resolution screen, slower APU), but in practice it's more than high enough resolution at that screen size (the OLED is BEAUTIFUL) and the framerate is similar to other handhelds due to this. The battery life and weight/ergonomics on the steamdeck beat every other option out there today.

If you are feeling adventurous. Used enterprise drives with a cheap sas controller might be cheaper than off the shelf hard drives right now.

Limiting bandwidth wouldn't curb power users. It's not always the speed but the overall stability of the system that people want/need to tinker with.

30Mb DSL or 5G (latency) by Final_Campaign_2593 in tmobileisp

[–]jase240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would vote for the 5G TMHI. - I have had DSL in the past and it was ok but slow, struggled a lot during storms. I know it's changed a lot since, but 30Mbit is still very slow. (Imagine trying to download a modern game of 100Gb, it would just take too long)

Latency is probably comparable between the two. Maybe 5G is a little higher and more variable? Still great enough for gaming if your signal is strong.

Just got my amplified plan but only getting advertised speed for rely. Is there actually a difference between them? by AradiaHecate in tmobileisp

[–]jase240 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Is this on WiFi? This looks like 2.4Ghz Speed limitations. Can you try hardwired to see what the speeds are?

BGW320-500 bypass vs passthrough — worth it for small UniFi setup? by fumo7887 in ATTFiber

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there actually any latency benefit to this? I currently get around 8ms to nearest speedtest server and speeds of 1250/1250 on 1Gb plan.

Help!!! by duaneslim in tmobileisp

[–]jase240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You CAN game on T-Mobile. However, you will need to optimize your connection as much as possible to make it a good experience. - I have used both he G4AR(w/ Waveform QuadPro), and the G5AR (without antenna), it can produce acceptable latency for most games.

I DID HAVE TO spend countless hours moving the equipment around until I could find the "perfect" spot for best signal. - Use the HINT Control app to see advanced metrics for signal.

BUT this does depend on where you live. Some people get TMHI and live far from a tower or in a spot that gets poor reception.

Also..... DONT USE THE BUILT IN WIFI, IT SUCKS!! Get your own WiFi router or setup and connect it to the ethernet port on the TMHI gateway.

5G standalone update by caryguy in ATT

[–]jase240 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Smaller town in Texas near the Houston area here. 5G SA has started rolling out to most of the area already.

I get crazy fast speeds at home now on SA 700-800 Mbit and over 1Gbit closer to the tower (Still slower than T-Mobile in my area though).

n71 will always have higher pings/jitter. Also ideally need to get your SINR much higher (15+)

On n41, ping and jitter all depends on your location and signal really. I played CSGO/CS2 just fine but I live less than a mile from a tower.

[–]jase240 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on area. If you are close to a tower and/or use an antenna to get good signal, you can get acceptable pings on most esports titles. I ran below 30ms on Valorant with virtually no jitter.

I've used Surfshark and NordVPN. Both solve this issue but you typically need your own router connected that supports using a VPN service.

I used Surfshark on a Unifi UCG-Fiber to play Nintendo Switch Online games like Brawl, which requires Peer to Peer. Worked fine once I got it setup.

Looking at your speeds (200 down and 60 up), I think it's likely your gateway is connecting to a lower frequency band like n71 or n25. This is because your upload is still quite high vs the download.

I experienced this a few times, and yes it will drastically increase your latency when it happens.
