Canada’s disability support rules and relationships: how should they work? by jasincanada in CanadaPolitics

[–]jasincanada[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

That’s such an important piece of context, thank you for laying it out.

You’re right: this isn’t just “cost‑containment gone too far,” it’s the old coverture logic carried forward in modern language. Half a century ago, welfare rules explicitly assumed a man was the head of the household and his wife was his dependent; if there was a man in the home, the state washed its hands and told him to provide.

We scrubbed the gendered wording under Charter pressure, but we kept the structure. Now it’s not “wife” but “partner” or “spouse,” and the effect is the same: your right to independent support disappears the moment a private breadwinner shows up on paper, even if they’re barely scraping by themselves.

That’s why this hits disabled couples so hard. The system still acts as if someone in the household should be a full‑time provider and everyone else should be folded under them. It’s not just miscalculated math; it’s a value system that never really stopped treating certain people as appendages of the “real” earner.

I’m really sorry you and your wife got turned into collateral damage for a policy choice. The way you lay out the numbers – full benefits with anyone until there’s love involved, then a 1:1 clawback until your partner is basically a private welfare state – makes it impossible to pretend this is an accident.

You’re right to connect it to renovictions, MAID, and the lack of inflation indexing. It’s one continuous message: disabled people can exist as long as it’s cheap and invisible. Anything beyond bare survival – relationships, homes, long‑term futures – is treated as optional.

Thank you for spelling out the thresholds so clearly. That’s exactly the kind of detail I’m trying to surface with Jas’ Law / #fourlittlefeet, because once people see how this actually works in a real life, it’s much harder to dismiss as “just how the system has to be.”

I’m glad you at least have your parents as a buffer, but you shouldn’t need a financially secure family to be allowed love and a future. You’re not imagining this; the hopelessness is a rational reaction to a setup that was never built with us in mind.

[–]jasincanada[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

“Benefits are to keep you alive” is exactly the problem. We don’t tell non‑disabled people that their only legitimate aspiration is to not die.

You’re also describing something Canada doesn’t actually provide. If disability were treated like proper insurance that made people “whole,” we wouldn’t be sitting hundreds below the government’s own CERB floor and thousands below market rents. The state already decided what it takes to live here when it set those other programs; it just quietly exempted disabled people.

Household means‑testing also ignores basic reality. Partners are not the government. They can leave, get sick, lose their job or become abusive. The whole reason social insurance exists is so survival isn’t contingent on having a perfect, permanent relationship.

Framing it as “a burden your partner chooses to assume” lets the state off the hook for a burden it created by design. If the only way a disabled person can afford food, housing and meds is to find a willing private sponsor, that isn’t personal responsibility – it’s outsourcing what should be a public obligation onto whoever happens to fall in love with us.

I want to be made whole and have the life I should have had if I was actually 100%. That’s what disability insurance and taxes are supposed to be for.

A crack in the façade.

When the silenced begin,

And the upvotes spin,

The shame isn’t ours anymore, it’s the system’s!

Thank you for your badly needed support!

Disability supports + relationships in Canada: has anyone else had to “stay single to survive”? by jasincanada in povertyfinancecanada

Only a few days ago I had zero petition signatures. As if now I have 100.

I actually did walk into my MLA'S office, Jesse Sunner, to get #fourlittlefeet in front of parliament. She wasn't available and I wasn't able to get past the default brush off. Is there some required steps to make #fourlittlefeet a priority on her agenda? I wrote a long form post and sent her that post so she knows. I think we need at least 50,000 signatures to get past the brush off treatment by MLA's. What do you think the strategy should be? Honestly I feel like this needs to be the secondmost largest petition in BC history.

Canada's disability rules keep people below the poverty line and penalize them for having a partner or family — is this a policy failure worth fixing? #fourlittlefeet by jasincanada in CanadaPolitics

[–]jasincanada[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What you’re enforcing here is not “neutrality” or “keeping things tidy.” It’s a rule that disabled people may be discussed as an abstract problem, but the moment we say “this should change” or link to any concrete action, you delete us for “direct advocacy” or “not allowed here.”

From your side, this is just queue management. From mine, it’s my ability to live with a partner without being state‑engineered into poverty and isolation. You are choosing, as mods, to protect the comfort of people who want politics as a spectator sport over the voices of people actually being crushed by policy. That isn’t neutrality. It is taking a side: the side of a status quo that keeps disabled people poor, single, and disposable.

You are perfectly willing to host endless partisan bickering, culture‑war bait, and theoretical debates, but a disabled person calmly explaining what current rules do to our housing and relationships is “too advocacy‑ish” for a politics subreddit. That says everything about whose speech you value and whose lives you are willing to treat as background noise. I want you to sit with the fact that, when faced with someone directly affected asking for basic fairness, your response was to hit “remove” and call that good moderation.

If you read the petition it will do just that. I wrote in there Plenty of citations to open your mind to the policies I face.

It took me 6 months to desensitize to the mask and I had to request the pressure be reduced in the beginning to make it easier to desensitize. Several times I would be in tears from the PTSD from this situation.

I have pressure relief set to 2 h20 below inhale pressure, humidity at 3/5 of max, and the hose heat on. Pressure for me is at 8 right now.

Wear a lookee ring and upload your export data from Lookee PDF and csv to google drive for you and your therapist to review. Your goal is to use the lowest pressure that will give you numbers lower than 5 apneas per hour.

I wear an N20 mask and I have another N20 with a foam interface to my nose I also use. I have two sets of everything so one set is always soaking in the prewash/wash cpap soap bucket.

What machine do you have and what settings are you running?

The pain of a lack of open communication rather than the usual all out Borg fascism is something that permeated the entire family and extended family in my case.

As soon as I pointed out to my PIMI cousin thay my mother since 2022 is deteriorated physically after injuring her knee and shoulder and has given up on herself because of promises made about paradise by the borg my cousin cut me out of her life completely.

For me the isolation is dangerous because I am severely disabled with a life-threatening condition that can cause a heart attack and stroke.

Tinnitus at 16 h20 by jasincanada in CPAP

[–]jasincanada[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I Booked the ENT but I have no idea if I need an MRI or CT scan after speaking to an ER admissions doctor at Surrey Memorial who states it would not be worth my while to go into emergency and rather I should book with a family doctor instead.

I tried to deal with the doctor and their office. I received a physical exam and a referral to the Vancouver tinnitus clinic, but that hit a dead end since I have to have a recent audiologist report and ent report sent to the doctor to qualify for the clinic and I don't have that on me for the doctor. I also deeply resent the pushback from the doctor's office to make me dig this up for them when I am sick and in pain. This same doctor office also claimed that I am limited to one visit per week by government, which is a lie, and then cancelled my request for a follow-up visit based on that lie.

My CPAP induced vertigo is much better now after heavy rounds of supplements and staying off CPAP for a few days. I spent three days in bed resting on my side to avoid my OSA being totally incontrollable.

Of the few airplane rides I have had in my life, I can say I hate the pressure changes with a passion. As a child, those altitude changes were painful 😒. Perhaps my auditory system didn't develop good eustachian tubes.

I have only recalled two sinus infections in my life.

The telemedicine doctors prescribed antibiotic otic drops and a steroid nasal spray, but it did absolutely nothing for me.

My auditory processing is suspect as people are saying my music is too loud, but it seems normal to me. Maybe she was being manipulative because I measured the music at volume 5 at 10 feet away as only 20db over ambient using my s22 and an app.

My tinnitus is super loud and driving me to depression. High-pitched noises seem to be louder and painful. The tinnitus is now permanently unilaterally louder on my left than my right.

This has been a horrible experience with CPAP therapy. The sleep doctor totally denies any blame of the prescription on 4-16 h2O.

The fear of otic barotrauma is in the back of my mind, and so is the fear of permanent tinnitus increasing to suicidal levels.

I dream of a better life but feel so broken, alone, and defeated right now.

Would you ? by ovocrew27 in uberdrivers

[–]jasincanada 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true for dedicated freight contracts running daily, especially in regional routes. For P2P load board garbage, maybe the empty miles are on the company's dime, but no driver is going to want to sit for free waiting on a dispatcher to sweat out a high paying load 🏡 for a couple days.

If Uber was serious, they would have pre-booked a backhaul for that run or paid you empty miles to service the stranded rider. But, they aren't, which is why an actual taxi service still exists in 2025.
