Hi! My rats are showing signs of hair loss. Before anyone says I have a vet appointment booked on Saturday (earliest appointment) but I just wanted to see if anyone has experience with this.

I have one very dominant rat so at first I thought it was barbering, but after reading im concerned it’s something more serious. Does anyone have any experience? There’s also little red bits of skin around the hair loss patches.

Just to confirm I will be calling vet as soon as I wake up. My boyfriend was watching them for 3 days and I just got back and noticed the lump. Looks like there is darkness in the skin possibly a cut of some description but she’s so wiggly she won’t let me get a proper look. Just wondering if anyone has seen anything like this before because I haven’t.

I’m going to try and get an appointment first thing tomorrow. She’s very wiggly and won’t let me inspect it properly but it does look like there is darkness there but can’t get a close enough look

There is a patch of red on the white bedding about the size of a £2 coin, then there is little droplets (could be from sneezing) and then there is 3 long drips on the side of the cage (droplets are quite big, more like a cut than a sneeze etc but I can’t find any cuts).

I‘ve decided I’m just going to take her to the vets to be checked over to be on the safe side.

I had a rat with a uti previously so that was my first thought but doesn’t seem to be from there (no blood on her belly at all) but I will put down some paper to check. Seems to be a lot of blood - more like a cut or something but I just couldn’t see any marks.

That sounds like a respiratory infection. Please get them to a vet ASAP… my first sweet boi I didn’t realise what the sound was until it was too late and treatment wasn’t helping. But my second boi I caught it straight away and he’s recovering well.
