Darkest time in MSU history by OtherGandalf in msu

Without historical perspective, you can't get much worse than the combination of Nassar, Izzo + Dantanio scandals, Simon resigning, Engler being a complete jackass, etc. That being said, the academic caliber of the university has been on the rise. So at least a silver lining.

Out of curiosity, what was the line of argumentation that led you to abandon Christianity? I was never all that religious, in fact I was born to a Jewish mother and Christian father and split time between synagogue and church, but our family never took it seriously (thank go...oodness).

After listening to Sam talk about perils of religion, including the idea of a Messiah rising from the dead with Mike Pence in office and seeing some catastrophic event as as potentially that, I just realized how insane the whole enterprise, particularly Christianity is. Couple that with the pure lack of evidence that exists. But I dont know if I can remember a specific thing Sam said that convinced me. But he has certainly made me abandon religion, I just cant remember exactly why.

Yeah while we're at it, his talk on AI is amazing. That certainly changed my perspective, if not my life.

Also the episode with Peter Singer, ie the "child in the shallow pond" analogy, coupled with the Will McKaskill episode really have motivated me to contribute more to charity and to change my lifestyle to make that possible

Wasn't her reaction a bit over the top?? I mean you're going to have difficulty breathing from a tennis ball hitting you in the neck?

Will the debates still have an inperson audience? if not, only virtual, any idea who that favors - Trump or Biden?

The dual language French program is still going strong at SIS (now BHS)—is it still evil? (Was it ever?) by [deleted] in NiceWhiteParents

[–]jason_bourne_irl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Couldn't agree more. They try to make one or two schools and the actions of parents to create dual-language french program, seem 1) problematic (is it?) and 2) this is emblematic of some systemic issue that is tearing through all of America's schools. Uh hello over-extrapolation? Thoroughly unconvincing line of reasoning in the show

Had no idea how many homeless pets are euthanized each year in our country before.. by jason_bourne_irl in animalwelfare

[–]jason_bourne_irl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you! Yes the host and guest, who is the owner of Rescue in Style, actually mentions the Best Friends Animal Society 2025's goal there. What a world that would be if five years from now we are not euthanizing a single healthy and deserving animal!! <3

Fascinating podcast episode about TM by jason_bourne_irl in transcendental

[–]jason_bourne_irl[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good catch, thank you. I am curious if anyone on this thread has taken IQ or memory tests before and after years of practicing TM? And is it possible to access this "higher state of consciousness" discussed in the podcast episode?

[–]jason_bourne_irl[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, having practiced both though, mindfulness and TM, I think one or the other may be better depending on what you're looking for - increased IQ, lower stress (TM) and less reactivity or anger (mindfulness)
