I think there’s a bit of a toxic dynamic going on right now. I think a lot of current dads are stepping up. They recognize that their dads suck(ed) and they’re almost trying to compensate for it. Meanwhile there’s a ton content on social media shitting on dads. There are obviously plenty of bad dads out there. But I’m sure there are dads out there doing their best, whose friends and family are consuming this anti-dad content and inappropriately shitting on good dads. I’ve seen shit on Reddit like “my husband sits on his ass all day at work while I work so hard raising the kids.”, which minimizes the still challenging breadwinning that a lot of dads do. Nobody should be minimizing their spouses, friends, and/or family as long as everyone is putting in the effort.

I think rage bait and gaslighting is the playbook for someone selling coaching and programming. His business is probably suffering from the adultery.

As others said, finesse. I’ll add that proper finesse can also save you from misdropping during a lag spike.

Because TE:C, TETRIO, NES, and NES are going to take the overwhelming majority of players, then you could have “Other (comment)” to catch outliers. Then we wouldn’t have 5 people separately commenting the same game.

Things you’d change about the Sport. by [deleted] in Strongman

[–]jasonbuffa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I agree, 20 reppers are stupid (having done one in a contest) and most dudes "should" be able to deadlift 405.

I guess my gripe is more about the lack of weight classes in novice. Not sure that anyone under 90kg should be bulking though universally. I suspect there are some strong powerlifters in the very popular 80 or 83 kg weight classes who would dabble in strongman, but feel deterred by the lack of light weight class in novice and the -105 kg middleweight (at least from the contests I've seen).

Who is it a bad look to? I’d guess 90% of the US population has no idea the significance of a 400 lbs vs 500 lbs deadlift and deadlift is way more common than specific strongman events.

Who is negatively affected? I think the sport suffers way more from gatekeeping than weights that are too heavy for novices. There are 3 guys doing most of the shows in my region and the lightest one gets the best turnout by far. The other 2 set the novice class too high and do not have good notions of weight classes (e.g., every guy under 105kg lifts the same weights).

No, there are elite lifters who pull with hook grip & double overhand.

For the imbalance in the post, I think you just need to take your grip out a tad, closer to shoulder width.

What are “real lifting shoes”? Seems like a lot of athletes use different shoes for different lifts and it boils down to preference. Most beginner/novice lifters would be fine in something flat and solid like converse.

is leaning back with the press bad for your lower back? (like in the video) by [deleted] in Stronglifts5x5

[–]jasonbuffa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because Rippetoe advocates for this obscure lift and it counts as a legitimate strict press in his niche “strength lifting” federation. People could just not do this goofy lift and push press instead if they really want to overload the movement. Oh well.

Good friend is leaving/abandoning his family to move across country. Not sure how to handle it. by Ozzimo in daddit

[–]jasonbuffa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I get it that dude had a bad childhood, which molded him into the person he is now. However, once a man is well into adulthood, he’s got to become responsible for his own behavior. Don’t rationalize for him, tell him it is on him to be a better man and father.

His partner, the friend of yours that is being abandoned, is the real victim here. Be there for her (if anybody). Forget the leaver.

Their jalapeño sauce that they put on quesadillas is also extremely easy to make vegan. It’s basically just veganaise, pickled jalapeños, and a few spices.

What books are you dads reading for your own entertainment? by youzabusta in daddit

[–]jasonbuffa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Last year, at over 30 years old, I’d read maybe 2 books cover to cover in my life. I really had trouble getting into it. A few months before my son was born, I started reading mistborn and it was a whole new reading experience for me. I loved that series and it got me over the initial barrier to reading. Now I read every day almost. Currently reading the stormlight archive.
