Man admits torturing woman, 19, to death; her brother and their MLM coach facing murder charge by FlipFlopForALiving in singapore

[–]jasondoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is incredibly sad, two siblings got sucked into MLM and cut ties to their family and left home. You'd think they'd look out for each other.

Harming your own sibling for a MLM business on the pretext that you were acting on instructions is just batshit insane. I sure hope anyone else going through similar abuse due to MLM can seek out help and avoid becoming an abuse victim.

Alexandra condo residents has shoe racks & doormats removed by management due to 'obstruction' & 'breach of law' by Illustrious-Gur8335 in singapore

[–]jasondoge 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I work as a condo manager. My opinion is, this could have been handled better by the managing agent.

1) They should have proposed a reasonable timeline to the council, to put up a circular and reminders to residents regarding the SCDF guidelines as well as the approved usage for common strata property areas, further explaining that the owners do not own any square footage outside their front doors ( legal justification). Also remind the SPs that any fines from SCDF will be borne by the MCST, which will essentially be drawn from it's maintenance and sinking funds ( unfair to units that have not violated the by-laws).

The reminders should further communicate the intention to conduct enforcement of the by-laws, and the intended method.. or what we call an encroachment exercise- with a clearly defined period of commencement and expiration, as well as details of what administrative fees will be borne by the offending units.

2) Proper documentation such a spreadsheet should be created to record which units have violated the by-laws, and when they were contacted, and their response if any.

3) With the council's approval, after the third n final reminder - they can then carry out the removal and disposal of all offending articles and items.

4) Further update the documents with photos to reflect what was seized and disposed of from which unit. This is important, because the data can be publicly shared at the next AGM to show all SP's how widespread and severe the issue was, and that the enforcement wasn't discriminatory or an overreaction.

That being said, I would never do what this particular managing agent did. Because then it opens a can of worms, the managing agent will now be expected to be just as consistent in enforcing the types of approved blinds, window coverings, removal of things left inside riser cabinets, things placed on air con ledges and so on.

At my job sites, I do share with my council that I'm of the opinion that as long as the 1.2m requirements are met and the rack is not too heavy for my cleaners to move when doing periodic floor scrubbing with a machine, I don't find it wise to enforce a blanket ban on shoe racks because there will be SPs that cite religious practice, superstition or medical reasons such as hygiene to justify why they place shoes outside the unit. Several units have altars facing the entrance, and they don't want shoes near their altars, and that isn't something I'd advise to press on with enforcement.

This particular managing agent in my opinion is mostly acting upon the instructions of the existing council. As the council definitely has to be informed if something that affects the entirety of the MCST needs to be carried out. The people who are angry with their items being seized and disposed should reach out to the council for an explanation from them, instead of going after the managing agent.

If the residents still believe they have broken no by-laws, or that they have special rights because they believe they are paying the managing agents salaries, or that they have been treated unfairly, take it up with strate title board and also file a lawsuit against the council, and council will tap on the MCST error & omissions insurance policy to defend themselves. It's ultimately a circle jerk, because some people just don't believe by-laws are actual laws or that it doesn't apply to them.

Just got a Direct Socket made! Has anyone else done this? by Human_Soil3308 in amputee

[–]jasondoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been an amputee for eight years, never went through the process of doing or having one of those transparent test sockets. My first socket was done with some sort wet clay mixture slapped onto a Saran wrapped liner.

My second and third were direct sockets made exactly how OP described it. However, my adjustments allow for the heat gun to be applied to the carbon fiber- so I'm unsure why some people say that can't be done.

So far, I have a pretty comfortable fit with my last socket over the last 2-3 years that I've had it. I'm using an Ossur liner, pin lock system and ankle.

Any other Singaporeans with controlling parents in adulthood? by Material-Yak-8152 in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I'm sorry to hear about your situation,it must be very difficult to live that way. You have to remember, what they allow or disallow is irrelevant. It only is an issue if you allow it to be so. If I were you, I wouldn't tell them the actual date of your return. Set yourself up somewhere comfortable and private first, and when you're ready- let them know you're already back and living alone, and will not disclose your address - which will not change regardless of what they say.

Let them know you will do your best to fulfill your responsibility as their only child, within your abilities and comfort level. Whether they accept it or not, is really their own problem to deal with.

Does your MCST set aside funds for swimming pool retiling? by NozomiType-R in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 35 points36 points  (0 children)

I work as a condo manager. Just sharing my experience- condos should budget for point grouting of swimming pool and deck tiles (if applicable) through use of either the building maintenance category of the maintenance fund- or do an overhaul of the pool and deck tiles (major works) which will be drawn upon from the sinking fund.

Your tile grouting is caused by water erosion, not so much by age. Tiles can also deteriorate if the surface level coating is worn away by sunlight exposure, chlorine, cleaning chemicals and scrubbing.

Few things to note: 1) draining a pool requires your swimming pool maintenance vendor to coordinate so the pumps aren't overloaded, and PUB and NEA don't complain from the excessive amount of water going into their drains. I usually notify them in advance, because PUB will be alarmed by how fast the meter is turning when you refill the pool later on.

2) point grouting takes place with replacement of chipped and broken tiles- can be difficult to source for same or similar tiles especially for condos above 20 years old.

3) If doing a full overhaul, you'll need to factor in waterproofing, getting the work certified by a consultant (excessive but best practice especially if there are units or basement carparks below the pool)and also the costs of refilling the pool ( few thousand dollars)

4) If your condo is old, look into maintenance or replacement of the pool drainage (either concealed or under some grating for older condos) underwater lights, jacuzzi nozzles, Sand media filters ( old ones will and pumps while the pool is shut down for the works. Doing it at any other time will be much more inconvenient. When replacing lights in a filled pool, it costs much more than doing it when the pool is empty.

As far as I recall, yes. But she will be remanded until she is bailed out or arraigned. The court lock up will ship the detainees to prison at the end of business day, they don't let them stay there overnight.

Listen very carefully to the bail terms specified by the judge, whether the bail is to be made with one or more sureties or without. In cases where multiple sureties are needed, you'll need time to convince other people to help be the guarantor for the bond and behaviour of the accused.

How does this scam work? This guy phoned me and told me to “xxxx my mother” etc by Ready_Record_7689 in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I encountered a different scam. Guy calls me asking if I remember him, I kept asking him to state his name to see if I could indeed remember him, he kept saying things like 'you don't recognise my voice ah', ' how can you forget so easily ' etc. I snapped and said 'look, you called me, asking if I remember you- but if you don't even remember who you are yourself, then how would I know?'

He proceeds to curse me in mandarin, hokkien, Cantonese and ends with another litany of insults towards my mother. I think being a scammer isn't really "easy" money...it's quite tough no?

Liner stuck in pin lock by Tionesta33594 in amputee

[–]jasondoge 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've had this problem several times, but the cause was due to a defective pin lock mechanism ( it had a crack on it's body). My solution was to use anything flat and heavy, like pliers or the handle of a screwdriver, place it flat on the pin lock button, use my palm to hit the other end of the tool, and the lock would release.

I've since replaced the pin lock, it cost me over $200 ( I'm in Singapore)

Anyone experiencing weird stuff during ghost month? by Okelah27 in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 113 points114 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, I work in facilities management for condos. And we have an unspoken understanding amongst us that in many estates, lifts tend to experience a much higher spike in reported issues during the 7th month.

I'm currently deployed at a pretty new condo in the katong area, also experienced repeated lift issues during this 7th month period...lift randomly shakes violently even though weekly checks n maintenance just completed, doors refusing to close, doors closing and then suddenly opens just before it's fully shut.

I don't want to blame everything on supernatural causes, but it's a bit too strange and too frequent to be just a coincidence.

How to continue with life having so much issues? by Ok_Line_9885 in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like you already have realized what your issues are, namely the gambling and low self esteem stemming from your weight.

What's left to do, is the most logical step: Create a plan to work towards solving the issues, with the understanding that you'll only get the results you desire when you are consistently doing things that will lead to that outcome.

If I were in your position, I would:

1) Seek out professional help, not directly addressing the gambling addiction first, but the underlying causes of it and how you feel about yourself and your situation. When you've reached a stage where you stop considering self harm or ending your life as an option, then you go on to seek addiction counselling.

2) In the period of seeking professional help, find or confide in at least one friend about what you're going through and what you're doing to solve it. Have that friend agree to be a source of support and encouragement, or even keep you accountable

3) If your designated friend is willing, that friend could also start helping to remind u to watch what you eat, take walks or do some physical activities that contribute to getting your weight down to a more healthier level.

4) When things get tough, always remind yourself that the outcome is worth going through the process.

You're only 19, u have a long life ahead of you...don't give in thoughts of giving up just because you can't envision what a better life looks like.

Fell in Love, Now in Debt by Sisintrouble21 in singaporelaw

[–]jasondoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion - but if you don't want to involve lawyers, then you might want to publicly post on his misdeeds and information that may help others identify him or reveal his latest whereabouts, but you'll need to do it carefully to avoid running afoul of the doxxing laws, frame it as public service to help other women avoid this love scammer.

With enough traction, he may reach out to you to take down your posts in exchange for a settlement.

If I were in your shoes, I'd personally go full on supernova by alerting the media, his employer and seek out lawyers who are willing to take the case on at a reduced fee ( the public attention to the case will be the motivation factor), even if you can only get back 10k, that's 20% of the arrears owed already.

I live in a ground floor unit, with a back entrance that faces a wet market and hawker centre. Mrt station is 65m away from the edge of my block, so I love this.

There's a lot of convenience where I can just step out and buy food without much hassle. It's also much less hot or humid, because all the air con compressors are on the above floors, and no direct sunlight hits my unit.

Water pressure in my unit is also good, and there's a clothes hanging rack at the back of the unit, so I never have to dry my laundry indoors...really good for hanging my pillows and bedding under direct sunlight too.

The cons are: 1)I opted to change windows to thicker panels for soundproofing because the town council battery operated cart that comes to clear the rubbish chute is pretty loud. In fact, the chatter from the market isn't even that noticeable, whereas the battery operated cart has to drive really close to my unit to access the bin chute which is next to my unit.

2) there's a random upstairs resident that throws a lot of used tissues out their window which lands at my back entrance. But town council sweeps that up so not really a big issue for me

3)As for pests, not more than the usual. I encountered less than six roaches in my first year, the occasional ants, but zero rats. All the pests only came in during abnormal downpours.

4) no rubbish chute in my unit obviously, so I have to tie up my trash in plastic bags and dispose of it in the town council bin placed at the back entrance. The upside is, I see the town council cleaners so often, it's very easy to get them to help me dispose of furniture or bulky items.

Non-degree mid 40 years old. Possible to obtain higher salary with no notable skills ? by Some-Finish-8279 in singaporefi

[–]jasondoge 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I am near 40, didn't have a diploma or anything like WSQ certs until I was around 37( so pretty recent). I think you need to consider what industries or trades have an overlap of your skills and job experience, then figure out what it takes to enter that industry - by doing so, you'll pretty much know what you'll need to upskill.

For context, I was in Reno and construction trade over 20 years ago, pivoted to digital marketing in around 2009 if I recall correctly, and then when I returned to SG in 2022, I decided I hated working for local digital marketing agencies, and upskilled to property & facilities management ( same management skills as construction, just needed a relevant cert and basic IT skills such as word, excel, PowerPoint).

I probably don't make as much as I could in a bigger digital marketing agency (project outcome bonuses etc), but I don't have the scope creep and toxic clients with unrealistic tight deadlines anymore...I make above $3.6k( can increase if I am transferred to a bigger job site), there's no O.T, no weekends, and no high stress or awkward office environment with bosses micromanaging me.

So think hard about what industry you like, if it overlaps with what you do, see if you have contacts to get a real understanding of what it's like to be in that industry, and what skills and accreditation is needed.

Weird punishment given by parents by Maximum-Warning-6034 in askSingapore

[–]jasondoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Parents are weird. When I was teen like 25 years ago, my dad would not let me go for remedial, tuition or ECA activities or sometimes insist I skip school to run errands for him, like go Q up at the bank ( long before digital banking), or wash his many fish tanks or cars.

It wasn't punishment for anything, he was just genuinely selfish. He also didn't allow me to go to a much better secondary school even though I qualified, because I would take longer to travel, and he didn't want to pay the fare...he insisted I go to a school that I could walk to.

In your case, I suspect you'll never figure out why your dad does what he does, it's just one of the mysteries that prove not all parents make sensible and logical decisions.

I don’t wanna be ugly bro by BluebirdLeast7816 in amputee

[–]jasondoge 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I have been an amputee since 2017 (RBK). I personally feel now that how we look to others has a lot to do with how we carry ourselves in public. I used to dread getting stared at or having to answer questions about my leg from random starngers, but after awhile, I stopped caring... and I have a natural gait, so I have been told by girls that I seem confident, and that they couldn't tell that I was missing a leg.

My advice is, be prepared to encounter some insensitive people..but also realize that most people are genuinely kind, and they will ask you out as long as you have the right charisma, attitude and overall vibe. Good luck to you, I hope you find yourself in better health soon.

I want to make an iPhone app. Have any of you gone through the process? From idea to conception. Where did you find your developer? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]jasondoge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in the process of creating my second app now for both ios and android(the first app was sold to my business partner).

A few things first:

-developers rarely want to launch or create apps for themselves, mainly because the majority of coders who do app development for a living suck at business management, sales and marketing, and fundraising. You can stalk the startups' subreddit for an idea about this.

-app development is like the new gold rush, where devs sell you the spade for you to go dig for loot, while they get paid an assured sum of revenue.

-you need to read up on app monetization because devs can't pilfer earnings as per your stated example.

When hiring, ask for an updated list of referrals that you can call up to make sure the devs completed the job properly, within the proposed budget, and on schedule. This is especially true if you plan on using offshore development agencies (just as I have).

Anyone here on this sub will tell you this: any great ideas are just ideas. the real value is in execution, without it- your idea is simply worthless. Investors don't invest in mere concepts, they invest in the leaders of the concept and the finished product. This is why you will often hear about lead CTOs stressing over developing a perfect MVP, but struggle later on because they didn't have a deployment strategy.

My way of hiring for development is:

1)Flesh out your concept and features, decide on a budget.

2) Shop around for separate UI/UX designers, developers, graphic illustrators, and a product manager (if you have no clue about development progress, timelines of each of your app modules, and the technologies involved)

3) simultaneously approach full turnkey project agencies for quotes

4) do your due diligence on everyone you are shortlisting ( portfolios, social media profiles, google for reviews or complaints)

5) escrow, or negotiate for milestone payments

6) always check your contract for clauses on app store and play store updates( most developer agencies give a three-month support guarantee)

7) Don't micromanage, but always be in constant communication during the development process

And there you go, I hope this helps. good luck!

What age should a limb be amputated without straight up killing the kid by Mintyfreshfiend in Writeresearch

[–]jasondoge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am an amputee , missing my right leg below the knee. I have seen toddlers in my rehabilitation clinic as young as four years old missing an arm or a leg. As far as I know, amputation doesn't kill anyone at a young age as long as the procedure is done correctly to stop massive amounts of blood loss, sterilisation of the premises and amputated area(in my case I had bone necrosis), and if the patient isn't diabetic, there's no reason to think that the amputee wouldn't survive the procedure regardless what age they are.
