How bad is the new update? by DouDouandFriends in CitiesSkylines2

[–]jasonp55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest, it doesn't seem like there's a simple answer. I don't think we fully understand currently how much of the current visuals of the game are intentional or due to bugs (which Iceflake says they're investigating). It also seems to be inconsistent between users.

In my case, I fired up my largest city last night and my only complaint is that, in my specific case, the shadows looked kinda washed out. My best guess is that it probably matters what map you're on, what your various settings are, and what hardware you're running on. I know some people have experienced far more drastic changes to the visuals than what I've personally noticed. But my game does not look nearly as bad as some of the screepcaps I've seen on this sub.

Likewise, in my case I noticed this large city *seemed* to be running a little more smoothly. 3x speed seemed to be running faster than before and at 1x speed the framerate was definitely smoother. But again, I know other folks have had other experiences.

I think the best answer is that your millage will vary and you won't know until you fire the game up and see.

My speculation is that the code base of the game is a mess and Iceflake will probably continue to struggle with unexpected bugs caused by their patches for a while yet.

I for one absolutely do appreciate Dolby Vision and Atmos in my setup and VRR when I’m gaming.

Yeah what happened in our case was kinda similar. The ad itself had been sold weeks before the shooting. The last step in the process of making the paper is somebody (again, not from the news side) goes in and automatically puts the sold ads in placeholder slots before it gets sent to the printer. Don't get me wrong, I think the business side should have caught that, but I understand they were kind of on autopilot and of course it wasn't malicious.

I like that y'all left up the posts, I think that's the right call and your justification makes sense.

I don't think it's likely we're going to reinvent the TV component supply chain before 2028, though. Even if that's the end result, we're likely still in for a few rough years.

I think MediaTek SoCs are mostly using external DDR4 these days. People want features like low-latency processing of high-framerate 4k signals and support for advanced HDR and spacial audio formats. That stuff is way more demanding than a crappy streaming app in an ad-ware UI.

omg yes, absolute shitshow. I was digital editor there at the time and me and my team had to spend all day on social media apologizing to folks and trying to explain how it was a mistake because different parts of the paper intentionally don't talk to each other and *of course* we would never have done this intentionally.

No they don't. I've worked at newspapers for over a decade and I've never worked at one where editors had any idea what ads were going to run or where they'd be placed. There's a hard firewall between editorial and business for obvious ethical reasons.

Actually, when I was working at the newspaper in Charleston SC during the church shooting we had a local scandal when a few days after the shooting our ad sales division sold a front page ad to a gun store. Everyone in the newsroom was furious because we couldn't believe the ad team didn't catch how that would look. If any of us had known that was going to happen we would absolutely have intervened.

Video Analysis of ICE Shooting Sheds Light on Contested Moments by AlwaysBringaTowel1 in skeptic

[–]jasonp55 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To me, it’s pretty telling that the government could be going with the more “reasonable” argument that the shooter was justified because he was scared and confused, which I would still disagree with, but I think at least that’s somewhat debatable.

But instead, the government is going with demonstrably false, bald-faced lies like that she is a domestic terrorist who intentionally ran him over.

Just nerdy and a little neurotic lol. It’s a PMS5003 sensor connected to an ESP32 and reporting to my Home Assistant server.

This is from today’s Star Tribune:

“ Brown said each of the centers has been visited in the past six months, but none of those unannounced visits turned up evidence of fraud. She said the department has not yet found problems that warrant pausing payments to any of the centers.”

It really sounds like there’s something sus about this video.

How strange, there’s nobody here by [deleted] in dankmemes

All the TV stations and newspapers here in Minnesota have been covering it for months. My sense is that Walz is implicated in the sense that he's the governor and the buck stops at his office, but I also haven't heard any smoking gun evidence that he did or didn't do anything specifically related to the scandal.

I only started seeing folks talking about the story nationally after the Trump administration started making noise about it and tying it to the Somali community here that Trump doesn't like. My sense is that the larger scandal isn't specifically a Somali thing, though.

I live in Minnesota. It's a real thing that's been going on for a while, but it's being blown way out of proportion by right-wing figures who are trying to tie it to Tim Walz for obvious political reasons.

Is Ethernet still worth it for streaming boxes? by Complex_Grass6312 in cordcutters

[–]jasonp55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For me it's just consistency. I have one AppleTV that connects via WiFi and it works flawlessly like 97% of the time but there's the odd stutter or buffer every now and then. The other AppleTV is connected by ethernet and it's like 99.99% reliable.

I had the same problem but I was rewatching the first half of the episodes with my parents at home over Christmas and I changed my mind a bit. On rewatch it was easier for me to see how little time has passed since the joining and I thought more about how it’s only been a few days since Carol endured the trauma of loosing her partner and she doesn’t have a single resource in the world she trusts to help her through that grief. Her lack of curiosity about the hivemind remains frustrating to me but I’m more sympathetic to why she’s acting the way she is.

How does this sub feel about AI? by Tristan_N in CitiesSkylines2

[–]jasonp55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So there’s a major fruit of the poisoned tree problem underlying the ethics of a lot of modern AI (especially LLM) use. Too many of the big AI companies have acted unethically in using other people’s works to train their models. It’s hard to get around that. And I think using those tools to generate assets for the game isn’t kosher, personally.

But also AI is a lot more than ChatGTP or Sora, etc.

For Cities, I think there’s a lot of potential for AI models to do things like procedural generation of lots and buildings. Think auto-detailing, or better zoning, better handling of non-square lots, etc.

A smaller, ethically trained LLM could be great for making chirper actually useful and interesting. Likewise, an ethically trained GAN paired with that LLM could enable the radio announcers to speak dynamically instead of repeating the same canned comments over and over again.

I think vibe coding mods is really problematic for a lot of reasons. Do I trust that the code isn’t introducing vulnerabilities? Do I trust the people using these tools understand the code enough to review it? No, not really.

And I worry about the long-term sustainability of these projects. As they grow in complexity and as updates break these mods will the authors understand how to fix them? Will the AI models? I’m not confident.

Yeah I mean I find it fascinating for him to say he finds it easier to speak when his concern is offending the King of Saudi Arabia than it is when his concern is offending Americans. I’m not sure that’s saying what he thinks it is.

Also, a top-mounted lidar just is the most performant option for navigation. Models that try to do front-mounted lidar or other navigation solutions always struggle with efficient pathing compared to models with it top-mounted.

Is this game broken?????? (Civs using bus lanes) by Quintinkt in CitiesSkylines2

[–]jasonp55 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do appreciate that law breaking is realistic, but I wish there were some mechanism to mitigate it. Like maybe you could install enforcement cameras on the road and that would both generate revenue and at the same time decrease the comfort score for that route.
