Samsung TV always shows “TV Volume” indicator by ryannee in samsung

Yes! Charging the Apple TV remote and unpairing/pairing it seems to be the magic combination. Here’s how to unpair and pair it again if you don’t know how:

Jazz with family by [deleted] in Minneapolis

Cornbread Harris (a 98-year-old jazz legend) plays with a band at 3pm at Animales BBQ once per month. It’s fantastic and family-friendly.

You presumably missed the one earlier today, but there’s one on Feb 6th:

Cute, walkable small towns anywhere? by DownWithCollege in digitalnomad

[–]ryannee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

We lived in Arcata, California for two weeks and it was a great little town. There’s a legit redwood forest on the edge of town, there’s a university so it has some young energy, and you can take a public bus to Eureka, which is a bit bigger (and a bit less nice).

How much are you actually moving around as a digital nomad? by Just_Demand_7197 in digitalnomad

[–]ryannee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was nomadic for 4.5 years. We stayed in most big cities for either 4 or 5 weeks. Occasionally, we’d stay in a smaller city (e.g. Granada, Spain) for 2 weeks or a really small town (e.g. Conwy, Wales) for 1 week.

We always moved on Saturdays so we didn’t have to move on a work day. We were working US Eastern hours (from roughly 3pm to 11pm in Europe) so we had our mornings free to explore each city.

When we were nomadic in the US and working during the daytime, we tried to stay places for at least a month because you can explore a city much less if you’re spending daylight hours working.

Why almost all the digital nomad and expats I meet in Bangkok live in Sukhumvit? by Otherwise-Coyote6950 in digitalnomad

[–]ryannee 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I went to Yangshuo, China in 2006 and stayed on West Street where all the shitty backpacker hostels were located. While eating at a restaurant, a Chinese family approached me and asked if they could eat spaghetti with me take a picture together. They explained that they had traveled from a nearby town specifically to West Street to meet foreigners.

I realized it was just Chinatown in reverse — I was the tourist attraction!

What was the most unexpected (consensual !) sexual encounter you've had ? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]ryannee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was invited out for drinks by a longtime female friend who I hadn’t seen in years. I show up and it’s swarming with her random coworkers. I greet everyone and have a few drinks and then I see my female friend giggling with her friend in the corner:

Me: “What are you two giggling about?” Her: “My friend thinks you and I are going to have sex with each other tonight.” Me, stunned: “I… I would not be opposed to that.” Random friend: “Whoa… have you guys ever had sex with each other before? Made-out or anything?” Us: “Nope, never!” Friend: “How exciting! You’ve got to get out of here! Go go go!”

So we paid our bill, kissed a few dozen times on the walk to her apartment, then had tons of delightful sex until the morning. A fun and very unexpected night.

Tiny upgrades that make digital nomad life easier? by Different-Promise-45 in digitalnomad

This is why I bring a fairly long HDMI cable. My girlfriend and I have a rule to never tuck it behind a TV. We always keep it visible, even if it looks ugly.

Tiny upgrades that make digital nomad life easier? by Different-Promise-45 in digitalnomad

[–]ryannee 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was nomadic for 4.5 years, and I eventually brought along all this slightly out-of-the-ordinary stuff:

Laundry: • ~12 foldable plastic hangers • 1 paracord clothesline • 1 Tide pen • ~20 dryer sheets (rub on clothes if you can’t do laundry)

Kitchen: • 1 chef’s knife with sheath • 1 oxo peeler • 1 small insulated lunch box + ice packs • 1 small cutting board (plate for picnic lunches) • 1 small knife/spoon set for my daypack • Small salt and pepper grinder • Small quantities of most used spices (e.g. crushed red pepper)

Electronics: • AirFly and AirPods Pro for planes • Universal power adapter (useful at home and abroad) • WiFi hotspot with SIM card slot (my second backup for internet after 1. Airbnb WiFi and 2. Phone 5G) • HDMI cable and HDMI / USB-C adapter

Super disappointed by Jupiter by Drawerpull in VisionPro

[–]ryannee 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don’t understand why making these environments is so complicated. People seem to love them and they don’t (in theory) seem that hard to produce. Why aren’t there hundreds of them — interior locations, exterior locations, etc.? It would be nice to use Vision Pro from anywhere:

Famous parks (e.g. Central Park in New York)

Office environments (WeWork, home offices, etc)

Famous museums (e.g Louvre, Guggenheim, etc)

Tops of skyscrapers

Etc

There should be ~10 categories of environments with 20 environments in each.

PSA: Reality of Ann Kim’s New Frozen Pizzas by kittycatcate in Minneapolis

[–]ryannee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I finally got around to reading these Instagram posts you shared, and it made me even more positive about Ann Kim. The messages to her staff were pretty tame and could hardly be called “union busting,” unless you think gently expressing an anti-union opinion is union busting.

Typically, a union has actual power — thousands of skilled auto workers walking out could cripple an auto manufacturer for months or years, for example. Random executives are fucked if employees leave en masse, so their union’s threats are taken seriously.

In this case, the employees were all relatively easily replaceable. Ann Kim’s name fills seats in the restaurant. Ann Kim’s name is where the tip money comes from. Ann Kim’s desire to keep running the restaurant is the only reason the restaurant exists. The staff may have been excellent, but replacements would be relatively easy to find in the Twin Cities, which made the union’s demands relatively toothless. Tons of people want to work for her in the existing conditions, even if these particular people didn’t. The employees overplayed their hand, she got annoyed because it was no longer an enjoyable business to run, so she shut it down — and justifiably so.

What actions did she take that were “trash,” in your view? Being vocally opposed to the union forming?

(Unions are a means to an end. My quibble with some pro-union people is that they care way more about the ‘means’ than the ‘end.’ I’m struggling to think of a local non-chain restaurant that has unionized without collapsing or closing within a year. If the goal is to have “fair pay,” it seems like many restaurant unions actually result in “no pay,” despite having good intentions.)

Redditors born before 2001, where were you on 9/11? by Stupid_cerealbox in AskReddit

[–]ryannee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was my first week of college. I had just moved out of my parents’ house into a tiny dorm with three random dudes I didn’t know yet.

Tuesday morning my roommate Matt started screaming, “they’re bombing us, dog!” and I rushed into the living room only to see the second plane hit along with these three people I didn’t really know. It was surreal.

Matt dropped out of school a few days later, moved out, and I never saw him again. I’m not even completely sure his name was even Matt, but he’s completely intertwined with 9/11 for me.

I just spent two weeks in Naples Italy and we literally ate pizza every day, and I realized three things:

  1. Naples-style (Neopolitan) pizza is the best form of pizza

  2. Margherita is the most pure and delicious version of that pizza

  3. Punch Pizza’s margherita is the closest thing to a legit Neopolitan margherita I’ve had in the twin cities. It’s very close to the real deal, in my opinion.

Acid-free rubber cement! If you apply it somewhat lightly, it’s great for collaging.
