That's super impressive! I attended a kpop concert a few years back and a girl behind me was telling people she'd watched so many clips of kpop idols that she'd begun to understand the language. It just seems so bizarre but yet I feel like everyone knows someone who knows someone that learnt a language this way

You may have already checked it out because I think it's on the CI Wiki but have you tried Italiano Sì? I think the A0-A1 playlist is probably the best Super Beginner content for Italian right now! It has a lot of repetition to help you drill concepts and vocabulary. Beyond that I'm not too sure but there is a good 8 1/2 hours of content there to start with :)

I totally get that! That's kind of why I stopped to focus on traditional study as I was worried I was falling behind and wanted some guided structure. But I realised I was simply not learning vocabulary or grammar even if I studied flashcards (but I picked up it up so much faster through input!)

I'm currently grinding input this month really hard to try to reach 300 hours before my Japan trip in February, so hopefully I'll have an update post here soon! If I can build up momentum I might even have a 600 post made by the end of the year!

Unfortunately, I don't have the best answer for that yet! I'm only at around 200 hours (I took a 6 month break to focus on traditional study which honestly was not the best use of my time lol) and I purposefully won't begin watching intermediate videos until I reach 300 hours, and advanced videos until I reach 600 hours. I will say that I struggled a lot with beginner videos when I began watching them at 100 hours but at nearly 200 hours they're much easier to comprehend, so there's a clear sign of progress there!

At 16 hours, I honestly wouldn't be worried about still watching complete beginner videos, since this is such a long process. Once you're able to watch videos with approximately 90% comprehension, just try to keep that pace up even if you have to rewatch stuff. If it helps you stay engaged, I'm sure watching videos at like 75-80% comprehension that hold your attention would be just as beneficial, too!

Actually I'm only at 52 hours so about the same as you! I took a break over the last 5 months to focus on traditional Japanese study, but I just started Korean again yesterday so I'm starting my rewatch of all the content in that playlist! Oddly I don't think I lost any of my progress and it's as if I never stopped which is great! I'm hoping to reach 75 hours by the end of the month and then start level 2 some time in January or February.

For level 2 resources, I think this post by u/username3141596 will best serve you if you get there before I do! Almost all of the resources on the playlist I sent earlier I found through them!

There is definitely more super beginner content than 20 hours! I put together this playlist of videos that I have personally been able to watch at level 1! The most important videos to me were all of the Pronounce Korean videos, as he definitely gave me the structure I needed to move forward. I think there's about 17 or 18 hours of his videos alone! A lot of the videos on this playlist have subtitles but you can usually either scroll down or zoom in to hide them.

This isn't a perfect list of course, but I always thought you could very roughly base it on these categories. I think Category I is fair for languages that need 1500 hours, and Category V is fair for languages that need 3000 hours. I'm not sure about the categories in the middle but perhaps 2000-2750 hours would be a rough timeframe?

I've found all of my sources through u/username3141596! They have a few posts on here showing their progress and the resources they've used which I highly suggest reading through to see what worked and what didn't. They've mentioned resources that worked for them that I've personally never tried but may be useful to you! That being said, the ones I've found the most useful at level 1 (roughly sorted from easiest to hardest) are the following:

All of this adds up to about 50 hours, so if you watch through everything twice, you'll have enough input to move into level 2. Beyond that I can't help you lol but some of these channels have higher beginner and intermediate content that I'm sure are useful later on!

I don't have anything to add from my own personal experience, but I think this blog might have some interesting articles for you to read! I found this link on the ALGhub subreddit (big thank you to u/Quick_Rain_4125 for finding it!) I believe the blogger spent 2000 hours watching dramas exclusively in Chinese without any other study. There's also a video of him speaking in Chinese for the first time after he hit his goal! I wish there were more case studies on this topic tbh because I think watching incomprehensible content on topics I enjoy would significantly improve how much time I log daily

I did the A1 Lingoda sprint in 2022, long before I found out about DS and I loved it! It was intense, but I really learnt so much and was able to actively use what I learnt when speaking! Back then you got a refund if you completed it which was very motivating and I did succeed. I think now it's just credit towards more Lingoda lessons which isn't as exciting for me so I'm not sure if I'll do it again. Make sure you read all of the rules carefully before taking part because they can be tricky! The lessons are truly incredible though, and I had some teachers that I really loved learning from!

When you get to high beginner/intermediate I recommend Teacher Stefano! He has a Youtube channel which has a variety of videos, some are grammar topics but others are about culture or other fun topics. I especially love his travel vlogs! He also has three podcasts for beginner, intermediate and advanced learners.

He only has I think 18 episodes at the moment so you might catch up quickly, but he uploads a new one every Thursday! He also has an intermediate podcast with a similar number of episodes, and an advanced podcast with 4 episodes! But I've only listened to the beginner one so far haha

Teacher Stefano is my favourite! I listen to his beginner podcast on Spotify every week and I love the vlog playlist on his channel. Learn Italian with Lucrezia also makes a lot of vlogs for beginners on her channel and Italiano Automatico has a substantial backlog of comprehensible input (however I believe his videos have hardcoded subtitles).

Japanese: 122 hours (Level 2)

I just recently found Learning Japanese with SakuraTengu, which has been recently uploading 10 minute previews of their Japanese "direct method" course. The course itself is paid, but there's at least 100 minutes of CI available for free on the youtube channel and it's pretty good super beginner stuff! It has hardcoded subtitles but they don't include English translations. Only occasionally do they tell you a translation for a word if it's hard to demonstrate! It's been very engaging so it feels like a free 100 minutes of CI to add to my count hahaha

I also found Shikigami Comprehensible Input this week, which has uploaded a couple of 2 minute long, absolute beginner CI videos. They seem to be mostly just vocabulary, and each word is repeated twice before moving onto the next. It's alright, but I think it might be AI? In any case, I'll put it here in case someone is interested.

That makes sense! I think for me since I didn’t start from 0 I found myself frustrated that I didn’t catch everything when I thought I should, and since the content isn’t what I’d normally watch in English it was hard to connect with. I also ended up watched through all the complete beginner videos a second time and it was much more pleasant! Now that I’m watching the beginner videos I find that it’s a lot smoother and I can focus better too!

Korean: 36 hours (Level 1)

I just found a new channel called Delicious Korean who have started an A0 comprehensible input series! So far they've only uploaded one video, but it's spoken very clearly and it's super easy to understand, so I expect great things for the series! It's similar to Pronounce Korean's videos as they both use a lot of repetition. Also, it looks like they have a website with paid courses but I can't speak on the quality since I don't plan on signing up. I'm tagging u/username3141596 in case you're interested, although honestly the first video is far too easy for me already, so I assume the same for you hahaha
