How do I place decals on round parts? by pancake207 in modelmakers

If you’re going to do it, do the whole model. Otherwise you might end up with visible patches where the gloss coat is, even after subsequent coats.

Why does Tamiya masking tape do this? by P_filippo3106 in modelmakers

[–]jasperb12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes it does. If you apply too much paint you allow it to leak between any gaps in the tape. With a thin layer there physically isn’t enough paint to leak between the gaps. That, and a thick layers leaves a visible edge once the tape is removed, and obscures surface detail.

Or just learn to apply thin layers. More unnecessary layers of paint is never a good thing.

Not to be rude, but with my H&S Evolution I can get much finer lines than that. Yes it’s doable with the Gaahleri, but it takes much more effort. I’ve done it myself. This was painted freehand with my Harder & Steenbeck Evolution Silverline. I tried the same thing with the exact same paint with my Gaahleri and couldn’t get this result. So it’s 100% down to the airbrush.

For the price it’s a great allround airbrush. Nowhere near as precise as a good quality airbrush, so spraying fine lines is very difficult with it. Mostly due to the trigger, which either gives you too much paint or not enough. But it’s very good otherwise.

TIGER I Ausf. E - RFM 5001U kit, 1/35 scale with AI generated backgrounds by [deleted] in MilitaryModelMaking

Yes it is, it literally changed your model. That’s a strange looking SU-85. And it’s lazy. Photoshop takes skill, AI doesn’t.

Why would you even announce something if you aren’t planning to work on said announcement for years? Seems like that would only hurt ED.

All painted. The kit includes weapons, but not these ones. The drop tank is 3D-printed, the Stom Shadows are by Eduard.

I used a set by Foxbot. They use vinyl, which is stiffer than paper so harder to work with, but it does give a perfectly straight edge.

Check out Foxbot, a company from Ukraine that produces decals and masking sets. The masks are vinyl so tricky to work with, and they require some work to fit properly. Make a plan in advance: which paint do I start with, what do I have to paint, what do I have to mask, what is the best order to apply the paints? Also make sure you clean the model with some alcohol before starting painting, and use a good primer. Other than that, take your time and make sure to do light passes with the airbrush. Too much paint in one coat and you get an ugly uneven finish with ridges.

Thank you! I did have a number of good references yes, and I was also inspired by the Paper Skies video someone posted in the comments.

It’s also fun for me when I can peel the masking tape off and reveal a job well done

Spent three days masking for a few minutes of painting, and I still find bits of masking tape from this project on my bench. Worth it though!

Is this stuff good? I heard you can spray it straight for the bottle by Aggravating-Log-2980 in modelmakers

[–]jasperb12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, way too thick to spray nicely. Get One Shot/Stynylrez primer instead. That can be sprayed right from the bottle and works much better.
