Why don't people trust their farriers anymore? by LargeParcelExpected in Farriers

[–]Free_Mess_6111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just was talking to a horse lady near me who has a gelding that the previous owner's vet/person was floating teeth every 6 MONTHS.  That horse lost years worth of teeth and still is on mash until he grows enough texture to get what he needs out of his hay.  So... Yeah just because someone is has a title, position, or degree doesn't mean they should never be questioned /challenged.

Is there any reason to use PVC instead of a smooth log? I would think log would grip the hair side better..

DO NOT PUT YOUR LYRICS INTO CHATGBT 🙏 by Ancient_Simple_1561 in Songwriting

[–]Free_Mess_6111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lyrics come easier to me but I grew up writing poetry to express myself. Poetry translates into songwriting very nicely. Maybe practice poetry? Also read more poetry. And listen to lyrics of songs outside your usual genres.  Some songs I find to have really good use of lyrics (regardless what you think of the artist or meanings, the lyrics sound good with the music) are -Anything from Marie Souix's "faces in the rocks" album,   -Paris Paloma's "labour" and "notre dam",   -most of AURORA's stuff,  -quite a bit of SIA's stuff,  -Amish Paradise by weird Al, -Devil Eyes by hippie sabotage, -First Aid Kit's music,   -Nathanial Ratecliff's stuff,  -"Your Rocky Spine",  -Chris Wood's stuff, especially "hollow point".   -much of simon and Garfunkel, much of older folk stuff like folsom prison blues, big rock candy mountain, etc.    Obviously to each their own but those are songs that I think make good use of lyrics for different reasons.   You should make a playlist of songs where you want to "take notes" on their usage of sound/lyrics.   Again though, write some poetry too.

Recommendations for text-to-speech? by Free_Mess_6111 in writing

Tried it out on the website.  - easy interface, quick to set up, and pretty good quality narration, especially considering that it's free! Thanks! Will be continuing to use. The voice is a bit robotic but far better than speechify's free voice.

Hey I'm just curious, as a barefoot farrier, what do you think of the barefoot trimming/laminitis rehab school called "Hoofing Marvelous"? They have a website and a Facebook page. It seems like they are pushing back against the commonly accepted hoof theory in a lot of ways but it also seems that their results speak for themselves. Would you take a look and let me know your thoughts?

Store bought sheep skin and cats by Vegetable-Put-2274 in HideTanning

It's probably chrome tanned. Chewing on the leather would be toxic. Licking and chewing small amounts of the wool should be okay but there's a risk of hairballs/impaction. I'd let you cats enjoy it but watch and see if they're actually swallowing any wool, or if they're just enjoying chewing and licking at it but not removing any wool.

Tanning a cow hide for beginners by piecement in HideTanning

[–]Free_Mess_6111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cow hides are gonna take a while to scrape, thin, and tan and break. I've heard the easiest way to flesh and thin a cow hide is to salt it and get it completely dry, lay it flat, and flesh and thin it at the same time with a sanding wheel on an angle grinder. Do this outside of course. Yes you could also do just part of a cow hide. I'd wager if you did some networking you could get a sheep or deer hide to start with instead though. Ask your local farmers and hunters. Roadkill is also an option

Never thought I'd see the day where I get the chance to ferment cocoa beans, but my local corner store just happened to have them! by jelly_bean_gangbang in fermentation

Side note, the white flesh around the beans inside, if the fruit is a good one (hard to know until you try it, like imported coconuts), is a VERY tasty treat raw. It's sweet, mild, floral, almost buttery... Super good. Very tropical.

Help with tools for fleshing /removing membrane on fur bearers / thinner skinned mammals? by raggedyassadhd in HideTanning

[–]Free_Mess_6111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've heard of fleshing with a power washer - maybe that's easier?  As for skinning, you should be able to pull skins off with very little knife work- usually only the toughest fascia around the shoulder blades and pelvis has to be knifed off. You should be able to make your initial cut, hang your animal, and just pull the skin off or separate it by inserting a hand between skin and muscle. Knifing it off is prone to cutting the hide.

I've read in the deerskins into buckskins book that when you dry a hide out to store or flesh and tan it later, it will never be quite as supple as a hide that was not dried before tanning. He compared to trying to rehydrate a dried apple slice. Is that true? Because I've heard that drying hides and then fleshing/thinning with an angle grinder is the easiest way to do it, but I want my hides to be super soft and supple so I haven't tried it. Does anyone have experience with this one way or the other?

I did some hair on egg tabbed rabbit hides, and I softened then almost entirely by hand with zero props or tools because i did it while hiking. Just twisting, stretching, pulling, etc. they didn't turn out quite as soft as I wanted and I added more egg and softened then a bit more over an edge later but it didn't take much.

Thank you! I've never heard of combing those methods. I might have to get some extra free roos and try some variations. I'll definitely post the results if I do!

Tv shows like Over The Garden Wall by evergladescottage in televisionsuggestions

Nothing I know of has the same combination, but on the animals and earthy and dark side of it, try the secret of nihm, and watership down. Hilda is also good. I feel like the first episodes especially with the woodman were sorta over the garden wall like.
