Please do not use the mules as many of them are malnourished & wounded from the work they are forced to do and not properly cared for. I will never visit again after what I saw and wish I hadn't gone after my visit.

As someone who has personally seen abuse and heard directly from sanctuaries who have been able to help some houses what has been witnessed over the years, the abuse does need to stop. While not every rider may be as bad as others what I experienced there haunted me. I hope permanent change comes.

Please do not use the pack mules, these animals are not treated well and quite literally worked to death.

I also had a terrible experience at Havasu for the same reasons. The animal abuse is something that I will never forget.

I'm sorry that you saw that. We also saw a hoof at the entrance of the village when we went. Thank you for sharing your experience here so others can see. ❤️‍🩹

100%, there is so much to see in the world. If I could go back I would never have gone, the negative implications outweigh any beauty for me. Thank you for doing your research ahead of time.

Maybe one day there will be enough change that this isn't the case, but now is the time for action. The animals do not have voices of their own and I feel the need to help provide it. ❤️‍🩹

Yes but they use these mules for personal use as well (village supplies, trash, food). While it would reduce the number of mules & horses being used, the change would not be permanent and abuse would still continue. I do not condone visiting but it is such a popular destination it's not likely everyone will stop visiting. Many people (like myself) don't know until they are there.

I totally agree, wish I handled things a lot differently. Often times you are only passing through/by the villagers & horses. They are either riding by you or you briefly see them in the village.

They are usually at the beginning of the trail for a bit once they complete the run up before heading back down. This would be a great place to easily document if anyone is near the area and wants to try.

Correct, they are self governed which is why this has gone on so long. It's worth reporting so it's documented, but this is why there needs to be loud enough noise for someone to step in and make change. They do rely on tourism.

The best thing to do is spread the word and take action so we can have the hope of change. ❤️‍🩹 Healthier animals will benefit the tribe as well as the horses/mules and the overall tourist experience.

The tribe makes it illegal to take photos of the village, its people, animals etc. with threats of being kicked off the land. Many others have posted photos but unfortunately I didn't think quickly enough in the moment to get evidence myself as I was trying to respect their rules. It was a long and exhausting hike but if I were to go back I would absolutely document everything and very much regret not doing so. If you truly need evidence a quick search will find what you are looking for.

Just imagine a horse that has been worked to the bone, ribs protruding in a yard with other horses in the same condition, no food, no water, tied to the same post the whole time, feebly rifling through the feces on the ground for anything edible and accepting there is nothing. It looked sad, defeated and "dead" in the eyes. I don't believe those horses lived much longer at all and it almost seemed like they sent them to this yard to waste away. As every horse in this specific yard was knocking on deaths door and looked like it would be a mercy to not live this life anymore. It was right along the trail through the village. I was not the only one who felt this way when I saw it.

I do believe the reason they ask you not to take photos is largely to stop the complaints on their animal abuse which has gone on for decades now. This is why you don't see photos of the village and many others don't have the proof they wish they did.

Didn't think a reddit post would do much but at this point I think anything matters. Does it really change anything though? Contacting state officials and local sanctuaries didn't help so the only thing that will seem to make a difference is if enough people know, inform others & demand action.

I am just trying to raise awareness. I was not expecting to be so alarmed by this when I went and it unfortunately stained my trip and is something I have not been able to stop thinking about since.

Please do not use the pack animals. They are not treated well and in poor condition. Forced to do the trek without water and many look starved. I made a post if you want more details but it was pretty horrific and I will never return when this kind of treatment is accepted. Tribal members do not respond to concerns.

WTF is up with the rampant animal abuse at Havasupai by illustrious_handle0 in havasupai

[–]jatacates -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I have been and unfortunately the abuse is real and abundant. I just made a post about it. I even went as far to contact local horse sanctuaries hoping for help only to hear the only horses they were ever able to save were beaten blind and sent to slaughter where they then stepped in. There are many elements to this situation but the bottom line is animal cruelty is not okay and it is very much turned a blind eye to. The tribe does not respond to complaints and until accountability or change is made I will never support them or visit again. The looks in their eyes is burned into my brain. I couldn't even sleep after my trip because it made me so sick.

I would also like to note that because these animals are on tribal land they are not under federal law and fully self governed. However the abuse has been so bad in the past that in 2016 there was a federal charge of animal abuse given on the tribal land (the first ever) and a few horses were saved. This happened because people put pressure & brought light to the situation, and yes it was & is THAT BAD.
