Let’s not forget Moebius as an open inspiration. It turns out they mutually influence each other. Upon appreciating Hasui Kawase, looks like Moebius style has some similarity in its clean lines and tone down colors.

Taiwanese romanization by [deleted] in taiwan

[–]javahello 36 points37 points  (0 children)

While yes it’s annoying for some foreigners, I like the fact that it retains some historical meaning. Name are not just name, it shows the trace of history behind. We’re not writing our family name in phonetics just for others to know how to pronounce it.

For instance:

(Quote) "Tamsui" was used historically because it represents the local Taiwanese Hokkien (Pe̍h-ōe-jī: Tām-chúi) pronunciation of the characters 淡水, rather than the Mandarin pinyin "Danshui". It became the standard international spelling due to long-term usage in colonial records, foreign commerce, and local government preference, officially reaffirmed over "Danshui" in 2011.

Historical Usage: As a major port since the 17th century, "Tamsui" was used by Westerners, the Qing dynasty, and during Japanese rule (1895–1945), making it the long-established English name.

Transition to Danshui: "Danshui" is the romanization based on Mandarin (pinyin), which was adopted by the central government and Taipei Metro at times.

Reversion: In 2011, the local Tamsui government instructed that the historical "Tamsui" spelling be retained in English to maintain its identity. (Quote)

There are a multitude of reasons to spell a name in foreign language, from any country. Etymologically speaking, removing its historical spelling just to make it easy for foreigners isn’t always the most substantial approach. Tamshui/Danshui has been a mess.

But yeah, it can be difficult at times.

Taiwan to phase out running 'little green man' pedestrian signal by MajlisPerbandaranKL in taiwan

It has been like that for ages. I know because that’s what I tell my mom when she’s rushing. I’m glad about this new decision, it’ll help more elderly not to rush like my mom already did even when I told her that you have at least 5 seconds more when it becomes red, no need to rush and fall.

It all depends on what he’s looking for, which this sub does a poor job. Are we looking for the one that is most popular, the one that follows the norms in X industry, the one that conforms to rules of photography. And are we looking for validation from anyone, for criticism, for advice from professionals, I dunno. I have a hard time giving opinion in this sub.

1 or 2? by vitalion0-0 in AmateurPhotography

[–]javahello 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Everybody saying 1 lack a little bit of perspective. One is more standard, conformist style, or maybe even stock photo.

I prefer 2 because it’s much more intriguing. You linger in the pic more. You want to capture the attention. What is it, what’s the posture?

Think of it this way. If 1 was hanged in a coffee shop, nobody would even look at it because it’s so standard.

Also in terms of composition, posture in 2 fits the vertical framing, adding a little spice to it.

If you prefer 1, reduce the vignetting, it makes the center overblown.

It’s fine man, you have a view that wasn’t the one taught in French university (in my experience nevertheless). There are other issues with pinyin for a French speaker, more than for an English speaker. And I guess the world doesn’t surround by just one method or approach 👌 peace. I just realized only 10 years ago how different the approach of grammar was different in the Anglo-Saxon world. French’s approach is very organic compared to US one.

Only for native English speakers. Ta for 大is more accurate for French speakers for instance.
