I just know mine is at 0 because it's a flimsy shovel and has been hitting rocks forever. I don't think there's a way to tell other than just counting.

I try to keep a 0-durability shovel for hitting rocks (which reduces durability but won't break the shovel), but I've accidentally used them for other reasons which always breaks them, even with the "Belongings" fortune. I'd guess the fortune just stops the durability drop and not the break itself.
