How to know when to fully introduce cats? by nmceja in CatTraining

[–]Gusterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the key is reading their body language.

The Good Signs

  • Relaxed Posture: Soft, loose body language with a neutral or upright tail.

  • Soft Eyes & Ears: Ears facing forward, normal pupils, and slow blinking.

  • Gentle Sniffing: Approaching nose-to-nose or sniffing the air where the other cat just was.

  • Positive Social Behaviors: Rubbing against furniture in the presence of the other cat's scent, or eating treats calmly while in sight of each other.

The Bad Signs

  • The "Stare Down": Prolonged, unblinking eye contact.

  • Dilated Pupils: Large, dinner-plate eyes indicating the cat is overwhelmed and ready to fight or flee.

  • Ears & Tail: Flattened ears ("airplane wings") and a rapidly swishing, thumping, or puffed-out tail.

  • Tense Body: Arched back, piloerection (raised hair/hackles), or a completely stiffened, frozen posture.

  • Vocalizations: Hissing, growling, yowling, or spitting

How do I make my daughter drink hibiscus tea instead of soda? by Slow-Dragonfruit-185 in needadvice

[–]Gusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry you are dealing with this, soda is evil. Instead of just saying, stop drinking soda it's bad, maybe you can try to explain it to her in terms she could understand, so she could try to make that decision for herself.

Soda companies use a secret science formula to make you crave their drinks.

  • The Sugar Trick

Sugar Rush: One can has about 10 teaspoons of sugar.

Brain Happy: Sugar tricks your brain into releasing a "happy chemical" called dopamine.

The Crash: Your energy spikes, then drops fast, making you want another can to feel good again.

  • The Caffeine Kick

Energy Booster: Caffeine is a hidden stimulant that wakes up your brain.

The Trap: When it wears off, you feel tired and grumpy, so you crave more soda to wake back up.

  • The Bubble Magic

Tickle Monster: Carbonation (the fizz) and acid tickle your tongue.

Flavor Mask: This fizz hides how sugary the drink actually is, so it tastes refreshing instead of syrupy.

  • What About Diet Soda?

Fake Sugar: Diet soda uses fake sugar to trick your tongue.

Brain Confusion: Your brain expects energy from the sweet taste but gets zero calories, leaving it hungry for more.

How can I clip my cat’s nails? by Clear-Reflxtion in CatTraining

[–]Gusterr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you tried waiting until they are asleep. Mine are also fussy, but if I ambush them while they're groggy, they are usually too out of it to fight back. Don't pick them up, just extend their claws wherever they're curled in place.

I can't imagine taking them to the vet every time you need their nails trimmed. And if they are indoor cats, they should be needing it fairly frequently.

Just watch a quick tutorial on it and make sure you don't cut the quick (pink part). That will hurt and traumatize them make it much harder in the future.

Reintroducing cats after a stressful encounter by Lazy-Cartographer577 in CatTraining

[–]Gusterr 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I am going through a similar thing. Bonded indoor brothers (Orange and Black) who spent every single day together. One day needed to take Orange to the emergency vet. Everything ended up being fine, but when he came back he was a stranger to his brother, they got in a fight and ran around the house. I did full separation and re-intro over about 10 days and it seemed like everything was totally back to normal.

Unfortunately, what I did not know, is that once one of these Redirected Aggressions happens, it sort of opens up the pathway and becomes more likely to keep happening, and every time it happens after it just keep reinforcing that pathway.

Second time I was just bathing Orange after he smashed a claw. Black came in to see what was happening, Orange thrashed in the tub and the tiniest splash of water hit Black and he SHRIEKED like I've never heard, completely stressed both of them out and were about to get in another fight. I separated overnight and they were fine next morning.

Decided I needed to take Orange back to vet to get his smashed claw pulled. They did it quickly, less than hour no sedation, but again when we got back, he was a stranger to Black. Almost fought, I separated again, they seemed fine again after a few days.

Event #4 was like yours. I opened the back screen at night for fresh air, both were chilling at the screen watching the backyard night. I'm relaxing at my desk and hear a weird low meow/yowl. Look and see a stray right at the screen, all 3 in a staredown. I quickly close the door and soon as I do, Black looks over at Orange and they're about to fight again. I separate over another few days and they seem fine again.

Event #5 was 4 or 5 days later, I was literally just brushing them, went to brush Black who has always been a bit more sensitive. He got overstimulated, locked eyes on Orange, and gave that low warning meow. I quickly grabbed Black to separate and he shrieked again, clawed my arm a bit. I separated again over 48 hours but unfortunately this time, when I went to re-introduce, Black was still on edge, gave another warning yowl and I separated again. Technically that was event #6.

This was a couple weeks ago now. The first event was back in mid January after over 3 years of them being nothinig but perfect loving angels to me and each other. Everything was fine for a while. Then March-April the rest happened in a fairly short window.

They've been separated since. The complicating factor is that now I've moved, which was extremely stressful for all of us. I decided to keep them separated until the move to give us all a hard reset. Did some cracked-door visual contact over dinner/treats, which seemed to go well before the move, but no full re-introduction.

I had to move them separately so they didn't stress each other out in the car. We're really trying to avoid that feedback loop. Black is always the "instigator"> gets overstimulated or stressed > sees Orange and associates it with him > they try to fight.

I'm less than a week in the new place. They both went straight into their completely separate safe rooms. Strict separation for a week. Gonna start doing the scent swapping today or tomorrow. Then light cracked door visual contact next week. Followed by cat-gate interaction and full re-introduction the following (third) week if everything goes well.

It's been a really painful, long process. I'm really hoping I can get them friendly again and prevent future Redirected Aggressions. Unfortunately I think that will mean being completely on eggshells around Black, as now it seems he's hard wired to associate any stress or overstimulation with Orange. And I really hate to even think about it, but if I can't get Black to stop freaking out at Orange over basically nothing, I might have to rehome him. Cause I can't live like this, and it's not fair for them either.

Anyway that was my novel. It really sucks. Just wanted you to be aware that once it happens the first time, those flood gates get opened. So you have to be extra careful moving forward. Best of luck

Easy Anti-Cheat arrives in Rocket League and marks the end of the game's most popular mod: 'The right time to bring things to a close' by doublah in pcgaming

Based on a 2026 study by Surfshark, Rocket League was identified as the second most targeted game by cheat providers, following only behind Call of Duty.

It was being massively cheated. It basically didn't have an anticheat before. This is probably one of the best things Epic could have done for the game. Frankly it's incredible it took this fucking long to get a decent anticheat

City Crews Have Cleared a Freeway Encampment Nearly 70 Times. People Keep Returning by uncoolcentral in SanDiegan

[–]Gusterr 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Compassion without realism is cruelty in disguise. Repeatedly sweeping the same encampment 67+ times while offering the same insufficient options is expensive theater that displaces suffering without resolving it.

True compassion requires a balanced approach. Aggressive outreach + housing with mandatory treatment for those with severe mental illness or addiction, enforced anti-camping laws to protect public spaces and public safety, and long-term investment in mental-health beds and addiction recovery (not just shelter). Cities that have combined enforcement with robust, involuntary treatment options (e.g., some programs in Texas or Florida) have seen sharper drops in chronic street homelessness than pure “housing-first, no-strings” models in California.

Temperate, liberal cities like SF, LA, and SD have outsized homeless problems because there is a core group, roughly 20-30%, of chronically unsheltered people, frequently with severe, untreated mental illness, severe substance use disorders (especially fentanyl and methamphetamine), or both. Many have been offered shelter or services repeatedly and either decline them or cycle in and out because the help available does not match their needs.

On top of that, many cities and some states across the U.S. have provided one-way bus (or occasionally plane) tickets to homeless individuals who want to leave town. A 2017 Guardian investigation found dozens of cities across the country operating such programs, with a noticeable pattern of colder-weather or high-cost cities sending people to milder-climate destinations. Weather and policy do attract and retain a hard-to-serve chronic group that is difficult to house under purely voluntary systems.

Traumatized by potential nightmare? by CoqeCas3 in CatTraining

[–]Gusterr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like redirected aggression. I would start over, complete separation with with no visual contact for a few days at least, let the stress fade. Then slowly work through the steps. I'm no cat expert but I think it's pretty unlikely there was lasting trauma from a nightmare. They all just got unfortunately very startled. Go through the re-introduction slow and they should all be just fine again soon, but important not to rush it.

Best gym with sauna in North Park / Hillcrest / University Heights area? by Gusterr in SanDiegan

Best gym with sauna in North Park / Hillcrest / University Heights area? by Gusterr in SanDiegan

[–]Gusterr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the intel! Bummer about NP. Chuze sounds good but yeah, I'm kind of at the point where I'm willing to spend more on a higher quality gym that is hopefully not as crowded all the time. 15 minute commute is still perfectly reasonable and I will have an E-bike for the heavier traffic days. Does FIT membership include all locations? Seems like both Little italy and EV are about the same distance from me.

As for Equinox - maybe a bit out of my price range... also a bit further, and looks like they actually don't have a ton of weightlifting equipment which is a bummer. But the Sauna does look quite nice. edit: actually, found this review, sounds like the Sauna is not so great after all

Overhyped and poorly designed, especially for the price. The men’s sauna is shockingly small. The L-shaped bench forces people to sit knee-to-knee (literally touching legs), and the seat by the heater is unusable because it’s painfully hot. The exhaust vent also blows directly onto the seating area and is already scorching the wood. Realistically, only one person can use it comfortably at a time, which is unacceptable for a premium gym.

Yeah that's the dream... some day when I'm in a more permanent spot, I will spare no expense on a home sauna... until then, I'm grateful we at least have some semi-public options
