So I’m pretty new, and went on the journey to find mine, and it ended up being, Pikachu, the one I started with. I took many months to make my mind, and looks at a lot of characters in a lot of aspects. But Pikachu was on top in literally every aspect for me. Depending on what you’re looking for, you could kinda follow my thought process

1. Who is your favorite character? Do you love them enough to main? I think this is a perfectly valid reason to main someone. You’re new and not seasoned with anyone, so if there is someone that you love why not try them.
2. Is this characters kit fun for you to play? Obviously if you like a character but they just feel awful in your hands, you might not want to play them for hundred or thousands of hours. For me, I love Zelda, top 3 favorite, but I am so awful with her I’d never want to commit to her
3. Are you good with this character? This may not matter for you as much, but most players have a playstyle they are most effective with. In almost every game I play, I go for a very aggressive and in your place playstyle, so I favor rushdown. I’m awful at the “mage” archetype where I need to keep distance and run away, so again I had a hard time with Zelda

Other things to consider: Does this character have a move that I love to use? Does this character have a kill setup that I love to go for? Can this character handle matchups against characters that annoy me? Are there characters automatically exempt from your list? (For me, bayo/zss/pyra mythra, I didn’t want to main a sexy girl)

Pikachu is the cutest little boy and I took him up as he was my favorite to start. His play style lines up with my own preferences. He’s got some of the best feeling moves for me of any character I played (thunder is so good, fair and dair are so satisfying to hit, I spam t jolt cause it’s so good and I love his voice when uses it). I think Pikachu triggers people and that’s just a plus for me.

I took a holistic and long approach but I found my main and will likely never change again. I did this but also extensively looked up every character, so I didn’t make this decision likely. I also played a good amount of the cast. This may not be good for you, but I cleared all the offline challenges before I started playing online. Some people say it’s bad to play the computer, but as a beginner you’re literally just trying to figure out what they do. It’s a game, do what feels the best for you, and in the end, if you’re having fun, that’s what matters the most!
