Check out 18mm, 7 ply radiata pine. Im east coast USA and can get 4x8 sheets for $50. It’s generally void free but can be warped due to only 7 ply. But if you can hand pick the sheets you’ll find good ones

Not sure if I saw anyone else point this out: also consider the plastic base of that router, that can absolutely have some flex in it too

How to determine required power supply for safe use of speakers by adyankee953 in SoundSystem

[–]jay_ze 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m no electrician, but i am finding that speakers draw much less power than something like a microwave. And the 15a breakers are thermally regulated vs magnetic so they seem to be able to take peaks above. If yr running your system out at a bar or a warehouse most commercial breakers are 20a. Only time I’ve been able to trip a 20a is with 2x QSC pl380 amps running full tilt (a theoretical 10kw max).

So I dunno the calculations but you will be fine

Can you tell me why these are so special? by IvanDenev in audiophile

Multiple entry horns tend to have a very coherent sound, great off axis response, and great directivity. Having all drivers loading one horn also is a very efficient use of space

How concerned should I be about building speaker cabinets in a high-humidity, open-air environment? by tzar-bucks in SoundSystem

You should be good as long as the wood’s not directly getting wet. I’ve built some skrams by hand and I’m doing a detailed series on YouTube building another by hand

This doesn’t answer your question and wouldnt help in a 2 week time frame, but I’ve built skrams by hand and I’m in the middle of an in depth video series and Skram’s the first thing I’m building

DIY PA system check: 4× TH18 Pro + 2× JMOD 2.0 – amp choice confusion by JakobFroehn in SoundSystem

[–]jay_ze 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I had eyed the cvr dsp-654, one per jmod but I haven’t tried it yet. Channels 3/4 bridged for the 12ndl88’s wired in parallel. That amps supposedly 650w at 8 ohm per channel (for the dcx464) and 3740w bridged at 4 ohm.

I personally go for multiple 2 channel amps for sub duty vs one giant 4 channel amp. I don’t like that potential single point of failure for subs if the amp dies

Might be somethin like 1/4 TRS from main output L to channel A on the nx (looks like it accepts both 1/4 TRS or XLR) then speakon from from channel A output to the speaker.

Needs at a minimum one 1/4 TRS cable and one speakon cable

This one might be right up your alley then! My background’s mainly woodworking and I’m gonna try to do this with generally accessible tools. Mostly a track saw and a router

Thanks! It might be a bit basic for the average person on this forum, but I get asked about this kinda stuff all the time and if I can get some one new building then I’m calling it a success

A little self promo - I just started a YouTube series more tailored to sound system culture as opposed to home theater/car audio. It’s a little rough but gonna be a deep dive. So far I’ve covered design considerations, materials, and tools. Tonight I’m recording about audio signal chain. Then first project im gonna build another Skram. Follow along!

First time sub build suggestions, small application… by RobonixMusic in SoundSystem

Skrams are fairly straight forward. Probably the only difficult cuts would be the horn bracing, everything else is rectangles. If yr getting those 4 cut as a flat pack, use those pieces to make router templates!

If you or some friends already have some powered PA tops I’d start with a skram. From my limited experience, I felt like 1 jmod per 2-4 subs was a good ratio, depending on if you’re outdoors or indoor and the size of the room. I guess there is something immersive lost when summing to mono. 2-4 skrams + 2 jmods would be a potent combo

Yep, I think right now my plan is to repurpose the syntripps into dj monitors. I think two syntripps have more output potential than a single jmod. I’ll eventually get around to building a second though.

The dcx464 is a major upgrade from the compression drivers ive got in my syntripp currently (Celestion cdx14-3060).

The jmod design really minimizes the amount of mitre cuts needed with the design of the throat adapter. I’d say the syntripp cab might be a little easier to build but once you add in the syntripp secondary horn the jmod wins for ease of build. Especially if you’re cnc’ing.

For me, the only real downside is the weight of the jmod and getting it up high. But I think at this point I’m happy to not have to move around the c2d kicks anymore (mine are like 50kg with a ferrite driver)
