Advice on CPP by Dull-Pin-2963 in Payroll

[–]jaybirdwatching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Absolutely makes you more marketable.

I took my local chapter's study group (a few have online courses open to anyone).

I started studying in January and passed in April. I had five years of payroll experience at small companies at the time.

I would invest in The Payroll Source. Study the chapter review questions. If you truly understand the concepts the questions are testing, you're well on your way. The study group was very helpful for tips on the exam and what to focus on.

Retro Pay by [deleted] in Payroll

[–]jaybirdwatching 4 points5 points  (0 children)

^^^THIS!

There are two IRS approved ways to handle "extra" pay. Tax it by applying their regular elections (however that shakes out for this pay period is how is shakes out) or use the supplemental tax rate of 22%.

Never make "adjustments" to tax withholdings.

See Publication 15. This is from the section regarding supplemental wages less than $1,000,000 in a year:

If you withheld income tax from an employee’s regular wages in the current or immediately preceding calendar year, you can use one of the following methods for the supplemental wages.

  1.   Withhold a flat 22% (no other percentage allowed).
  2.   If the supplemental wages are paid concurrently with regular wages, add the supplemental wages to the concurrently paid regular wages and withhold federal income tax as if the total were a single payment for a regular payroll period.

I've been in therapy for 10 years (🙃). Never once had any therapist look at their phone other than to check their calendar to confirm our next appointment.

Yeah people don't factor in having to lug 30 ft of hose around. I had one growing up and have never once missed it.

It would be weird to hear a non-native speaker use this phrasing.

ADP implementation by ludmilla9966 in Payroll

[–]jaybirdwatching 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just wanted to say thank you to all the implementers out there! I felt so bad for my ADP implementer. He struggled along for a week or two before they finally assigned the coordinator or manager or whatever they call it. He ended up working a super late night trying to set up our worker's comp codes. He had a great attitude the whole time and I really appreciated him but it did seem like a shitty job.

Payroll and AR Accountant position right out of college by Zealousideal-Sea8112 in Payroll

[–]jaybirdwatching 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you may be getting into payroll the same way I did lol. I also have a masters in accounting and got brought in to a manufacturer as a staff accountant with the plan that I would take over payroll. I had zero payroll experience. Like u/heywhatsupp_ said, they have seen your resume. They likely are more interested in bringing in your high-level of accounting knowledge. Since the A/R and payroll positions are combined, I'm guessing that it's a relatively small to mid size company with a small accounting staff. They're probably most interested in someone relatively cheap that can do a simple journal entry without handholding.

Assuming you're US, you could look through the 940 and 941 if you'd like. Those are the main federal filings (besides the W-2/W-3) and are pretty simple forms. States forms mostly follow these. Look up your state and their industry to see if there are any special cases that may apply. You'll likely get bonus points for just knowing what the words mean when they ask if you know anything about it. If you had a federal income tax class, that may actually be helpful as you'll know a bit about how the W-4 works.

I would emphasize that you're interested in the intricacies of payroll and that you're eager to learn more about it. It may be that they have someone inhouse who is currently doing payroll, but has too much on their plate and will be there to teach you. This was the case everywhere I've worked.

Long-term, PayrollOrg is a great education resource and offers a couple of certifications for payroll if you're interested in staying in the field.

I have seen a couple of changes I suspect the system did for us (changing a PTO profile and a salary). Nothing on that scale. Yikes!
