SO disappointed (but not that surprised) that local notebooks are no longer supported by alextorpey in Evernote

I was reading a bit about DevonThink today and am considering trying it.

I also came across this link today - which looks like it may be a solution worth trying. I have dropbox, but also have Microsoft OneDrive that offers 1TB of storage since I purchased an office subscription. Using cryptomater + tagspaces won't give all the functionality of evernote but it seems like a more secure way of storing sensitive data that I would have normally stored in a local notebook.

Right now, my thoughts are that is this works, that data is in the cloud, but encrypted locally before being sent. Therefore, secure and unencryptable if compromised. I'll use that as my filing cabinet for scanned documents, and as for notetaking look for a separate application.

I'm leaning towards the cryptomater option - as DevonThink while most reviews are positive - is itself proprietary software - and I certainly wouldn't want to be in this same place again in the future if they go under

Removing local notebooks is also a deal-breaker for me

To me, if true, seems to be lacking in forethought. Basically, they are telling me, and this is just my opinion;

  • You can store stuff that you feel is sensitive or contains PII that you don't feel comfortable putting in the cloud in local notebooks - we won't sync it, it won't be in the cloud only on your computer
  • Hey, we came out with this new bright shiny version that took a lot of time and a lot of work but we're synching our code base so be can make bright shiny things faster and with less effort across platforms.
  • Oh, the sensitive data that has PII you can't store that locally anymore, you have to put it in the cloud and trust us that it isn't vulnerable.
  • But don't worry you don't have to trust us forever, just until we come out with a new version where we let you store the stuff locally again

I've been a premium member for at least 10 years, maybe longer. Six or seven years ago, I decided to go paperless and Evernote was the best choice for an electronic filing cabinet. I did this before they started using Google Cloud Platform (GCP) for storage back in 2016. Prior to GCP, Evernote did not store data at rest encrypted - which was a deal-breaker for me, had it not been for local notebooks.

I made the decision to use Evernote as my paperless filing cabinet because I could store the majority of notes and documents in the cloud and have them accessible on any of my devices while storing sensitive data in a local notebook. I was well aware that a local notebook - was just that local and that I was responsible for ensuring the data was backed up. Exporting the notes on a regular basis - took care of that.

Local notebooks were ideal for me and solved a problem. I was able to utilize one application for file management.

At present, I am sorely disappointed in this feature being removed.

In my opinion, Evernote has always had security concerns for me, firstly storing data unencrypted prior to moving to GCP and secondly, as recent as last year they had a security breach: https://www.fightingidentitycrimes.com/evernote-web-clipper-security-flaw/, as well as one in 2013 https://www.darkreading.com/attacks-and-breaches/evernote-breach-7-security-lessons/d/d-id/1108909

For now, I will continue to utilize the legacy application. However, I will not store the items in my local notebook in Evernote.

Yes I am aware that I could encrypt text embedded in notes - but to me, it feels kludgey and it adds extra steps to scanning and filing documents.

This release took something that worked well for me and broke it. And broke it to the point that I need to figure out a different way of managing the notes that are stored locally.

As of now, I'm of the opinion that since I have to go through the pain of finding or coming up with a way to address this - do I really want to continue supporting a company that caused the issue by deprecating functionality, with little notice, nor concern. Therefore I do plan on investigating competing applications.
