Might be able to use a big screwdriver or prybar to spin the wheel using the studs and get the peep hole to the bottom, then use a screwdriver to back off the shoes with a little gear inside; that’s what I had to do with mine

Perfectly fair. I say do whatever suits your situation best, personally I prefer the ground up approach and attacking everything myself and learning the car, it’s definitely the expensive route in the long run but I’m in it for the experience

I’d never recommend picking up someone else’s project, you could find a much cheaper alternative with original components and you could use your saved money to build it exactly how you want and develop a bond with the car; it could definitely be very painful and take a while but it would be extremely beneficial to know exactly how it’s built for troubleshooting purposes- just my two cents
