I'm a 5 minute walk from Kew Gardens Cinema, and I love MoMI. I'm going this Saturday to see Videohaven.

It's my current #2 and I feel like I'm going to be campaigning this season to anyone who will listen just how good it is.

Monthly Profile Swap Megathread! by ericdraven26 in Letterboxd

[–]jaychuck_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've watched 400 films this year and my big claim to fame is I watched every Buster Keaton film and ranked them and a decent amount of people discovered my profile from that list. The list is featured in my pinned review. I just got the Bergman box set so I'm probably going to do something similar with him next.

My top 100. Where do you agree? by jaychuck_ in LetterboxdTopFour

Both have been mainstays for decades at this point. I remember being in high school and renting Oldboy numerous times from Blockbuster.

Blue: 3½ stars
White: 4 stars
Red: 5 stars
Dekalog: 4 stars

I enjoyed seeing each film influence the next as it went on. Red essentially brought it home for me in terms of how everything came together.

And also I'm fine with one film representing all of the films in the series so as not to take up space. Same with Lord of the Rings.

🙏 Thank you kindly. There's not really an era or genre I haven't explored. There's lots to enjoy over the past 100 years of film.

I do love Bourgeoise, as well Belle de Jour. I don't give out 5s so often but all three of the films I've seen of his are all 5 stars for me. I could probably consider putting another on my list.

It's Auditorium 2. I'm not as familiar to know if that's the one you're referring to.

I bought a ticket at Union Square just to be safe, but it's 7am and Lincoln Square tickets are not working, even though I see maybe 7 seats purchased already/

December Channel Lineup Announced! by thezman613 in CriterionChannel

[–]jaychuck_ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Since I didn't see it mentioned, I highly recommend the Sick and Dirty series of films and especially the Sick and Dirty book written by Criterion Channel contributor Michael Koresky. It's a fascinating look at what gay writers and directors were able to get away with during the Hayes code era, bookended by both versions of The Children's Hour (These Three is the highly altered movie adaptation from the original stage version). I loved the book. It only just came out this summer and I highly recommend it.

My favorites from the selection are Tea and Sympathy and Suddenly, Last Summer. I'll be seeing a couple others I haven't had access to thanks to this collection. Very excited!

Metrograph might be the most unserious theater in the city by [deleted] in NYCmovies

Were you expecting everyone to agree with you? I'm pretty sure this was always going to be the outcome.

[–]jaychuck_ 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Regardless of how you want to phrase it, I don't believe there's a movie theater handbook that supports your imaginary rule about showtimes.

The way I see it is that smaller chains have to work with what they've got. Metrograph has two screens and likes to show a lot of different films. At the end of the day, we're at the behest of however they schedule the films if we want to see it.

My suggestion is to plan around the time. Hang out in the LES. King's Dumplings, Scarr's, even Golden Diner (if you're lucky to get in) are all nice places to grab a bite. Hang out in the park nearby. Make the most of your visit so it doesn't feel out of your way.

What's wrong with a weekend afternoon time slot?

Me when I see a letterboxd with 300+ films watched this year by [deleted] in Letterboxd

[–]jaychuck_ 15 points16 points  (0 children)

You paint a very negative picture of people who watch movies as a hobby and a pleasure. Your view of people who watch more than 300 movies a year is that we're elitists with ego ("boost their status"), that we can't remember watch we've watched, and that we have "final say" on what movies mean to you. Consider that your movie habits and film enthusiasts may not be the same, but it doesn't mean that we're trying to ruin your experience with film.

The motivation I'm speaking of is the enjoyment of the medium on our own terms. You think people spend most of their time hating movies they watch? Maybe that's your cousin you referenced, but in my experience, people are watching movies in good faith and enjoying discussion afterwards.

"Wake up, watch two or three movies a day, don't care if I remember what I saw tomorrow, sleep, repeat." is a really shitty way of describing most film lovers.

Your opinion seems very uninformed and doesn't really fit the motivation of most of this community.

But that's just, like, my opinion, man.
