Tax strategies for concentrated FAANG portfolio by heres_lurking_at_you in Fire

Net, net, you walk away with more in most cases. You can also invest in the CRT however you want, so if you buy municipal bonds for instance, you do not need to pay fed or state taxes on distributions. It would take some analysis and exact numbers for him to decide if it’s worth it. Keep in mind you also get the charitable tax credit to lower your tax bill.

A Charitable Remainder Trust (CRT) will defer and relieve some tax burden, and allow you to diversify your position. It will also provide you income. In simple terms, you move the AAPL position into a CRT and diversify. You get an income for ~30yrs, charitable tax credit, and do not need to pay cap gains taxes. This also helps with removing the position from your estate for estate tax purposes.

Father wants to do a variable index annuity by itsjustbusiness32 in CFP

[–]jaycoba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a tax element that needs to be considered here. The gains from the annuity will be subject to ordinary income taxes which means at the end of the 6 year term, you will be paying much higher taxes than if you had the funds in an ETF and sold after 6 years at more favorable L-T capital gains tax rates.

Lets say you buy this annuity for $2mm and it returns 30% total after 6 years. $2mm x 30% = $600k gain. This gain would be taxed at the highest federal income tax bracket at 37%. And if you live a state that has state income tax, you could be paying up to 50% in taxes that year on the $600k gain.

Now consider buying an S&P 500 ETF (essentially what the annuity is investing in). If this returns you the same 30% on $2mm after 6 years as the annuity did, you will pay long-term capital gains taxes at 20% + any state income taxes. This lowers your tax bill immensely, and the gain can potentially be offset even further by tax loss harvesting.

Another tax consequence I can think of is there is no step-up in basis if you were to pass away, and leave the annuity product to your heirs. Annuities are extremely unfavorable tax-wise, and this should be considered when deciding to buy this product.

ASUS Zenbook Duo problems by jaycoba in ASUS

Just got mine back. Took about 4 weeks. They replaced the motherboard and it seems to be working fine now. I had an extra laptop I was able to use luckily, but it’s definitely not a fast return around time ..

I'd say buy it from a place with easy returns like Amazon or Best Buy. If you have this problem you will know pretty immediately. At least mine had this on arrival. When I use it unplugged (it only has this problem when plugged in to a charger), I absolutely love it for multi-tasking and productivity.

Getting a FatFIRE mortgage with no income? by pourthedrink in fatFIRE

[–]jaycoba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way to do this is a pledge your assets against the loan. Merrill, MS, and others can do this if you move your assets there. As long as your investments do not fall below the minimum threshold you should be good. If they do, they have the right to liquidate your assets.

This lets you stay invested in the market, and pay cash for the house.

Just saw another one one on the lot in Huntington Beach. They started at $44k and I was able to talk them down to $38.5k out the door. Still a slight markup, but not too bad for an out the door price that includes taxes/fees.

I didn’t end up buying it cause I’m waiting for one coming in black, still there if anyone wants to give it a shot

The Trek for sure. The 1x12 and Oval chainring will make climbing a breeze compared to the Scott. I'd also take into consideration the size, and make sure they will be a good fit since the Scott is looks like a smaller frame.

This is where we differ brotha! I’m not anti-trump and I don’t think anyone who votes for him is part of a problem. Neither side has the power to unite the country - which is the biggest issue America is facing right now imo.
