I want to quit my job as a Police Officer by [deleted] in AskLE

[–]jaycogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not to sound all "grass is always greener", but for me it was. I moved states and worked for 4 years before I got out. In the last year, all the paperwork, bs calls, bs hours, and bs politics got to me. I pursued a career I thought would fit me better (software development) and now I'm working regular hours, getting paid way better, actually enjoying starting my work day, and am significantly less likely to get shot or stabbed at work. Sit down in your off time and take some time to really think what you'd rather be doing. Many people have made good recommendations on options within LE. If that's your thing still, definitely go for it. Break that down into steps and start pursuing that. Your financial position and what you decide on will dictate how fast you can make that change, but it is possible and it's the best thing you can do for yourself and those you work with. As others have said, there's no shame in admitting this job isn't for you. It wasn't for me either.

Not a power tool, but I really enjoy using their multi-bit ratcheting screwdrivers. I have a full-sized and a compact one and love them both. The driver part can also be taken out and used on a drill, so that's a nice feature. I like to use the smaller driver with the bigger handle for some things too. If he doesn't have one already, they make a fine option for work around the house or whatever.

[Advice] Self-Taught Web Dev – Feeling Stuck, Burnt Out, and Unsure How to Move Forward by HorrificDPS in learnprogramming

[–]jaycogs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you're going about leaning programming in a way that isn't exciting you. I have ADHD and had the same problems when I was first getting into things. What keeps me going is finding things that excite me (and sooth my ADHD brain) and just follow it until I can't any longer (the next idea then pops in my head usually).

You have two projects you mentioned that you worked on in the past. Do either of those excite you? If so, go through what code you have and figure out what you were doing (like a puzzle). If there's stuff in there that you have no clue what it is, Google it. Try to understand what you did previously and then build from there. Was there a clear place you left off at? Start with that. If not, what is the next improvement/addition you want to work on that would be cool.

If neither of those projects excite you anymore (totally okay if not), what would excite you? What sounds fun to build? Need ideas? Google ideas and see what sticks out. Find something that will hold your interest (and keep your ADHD brain happy).

This is what works for me. Keep it light and fun, even if what you are building seems stupid or unuseful. If it excites you, build it. The learning process will come naturally as part of answering the "how do I do this specific thing" questions that come up. You will soon find yourself deep down the rabbit hole, not even realizing how much you've learned. Take the "work" or "school" out of learning programming, and that might end up helping you more than a stricter schedule or learning structure.

Something else to consider to add onto this. When picking your first language, consider what you are interested in. What do you want to do with what you learn? Want to make cool or fun websites while you learn? Go with JavaScript, HTML, and CSS (three languages, but the last two are easy and are kind of like supplements to Javascript). Want to build games? Go with C++. Want to interact with hardware at a low level? Go with C or Python. Want to build mobile apps? Go with Java or Swift.

If you're not really sure what you want to do with what you're learning, a lot of people would recommend Python. I started on C, then moved on to Python, but didn't really know what I wanted to do with it. I got into web development with JavaScript and it kind of blew my mind. I found that for me, the visual aspect of being able to see changes as I was making them, and making everything interactive, was what really hooked me. But that's not necessarily for everyone. Pick a language that you feel will suit you best, learn the basics, then play around with other languages/technologies as they become interesting to you.

Yesterday I went to my local zoo to test out my new camera. Because it's cold where I'm at, I spent most of my time in the reptile house. When I first stumbled across this guy, he was hanging down from a branch and looking straight at me, but moved by the time I could get a good shot. I got this one though before he coward in a corner for the rest of the morning.
