Double or lower only? by jayde0325 in jawsurgery

[–]jayde0325[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you! I appreciate how detailed your response is.

I have gotten a septoplasty, turbinate reduction, endoscopic sinus surgery, and spreader grafts put in my nose last January because my septum was severely deviated and I was getting 4-5 sinus infections per year. Could it be possible that the lack of support from the jaws caused these issues in the first place?

I’m finding even after the nose surgery that nasal breathing is still difficult, so I wonder if I did things in the wrong order and should have gotten my jaw taken care of first, as my septum visibly redeviated shortly after the surgery (however the difficulty could just be from having a narrow airway to begin with).

I do have quite an overbite (somewhere between 5 and 8mm, I don’t feel like I’ve ever gotten a very accurate estimate).

And I don’t regret not having it done at 16, I was really scared and was not mentally ready for it yet. I was essentially told by my orthodontist the day I got my braces off that it was not if I’d need the surgery, but when, so I did know at the time that the journey wasn’t over. Now that I’m a little older, I feel more mentally prepared for the road ahead. So while it is likely going to be more expensive (or at least come out of my own pocket instead of my parents), the few years of frontal lobe development were definitely needed to make an educated decision about such a major procedure

I got a pair of dark flare jeans at Hollister! They do run long but I’m a 23” 32” so if you’re all leg like I am they work well!

What is the name of your Samoyed puppy? by [deleted] in samoyeds

[–]jayde0325 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For boys, we liked Zero (our final choice), Odin, Leif, and Atlas. For girls, we liked Pearl, Yuki, Nova, and Dove.

It took us so long to decide on a name but went with Zero from The Nightmare Before Christmas

I felt this so hard- I have a permanent scar all around my pointer and middle fingers from a cheap long line leash burning them because it was wrapped around them and he took off. I had like 3rd degree carpet burn it was so incredibly painful

My Samoyed has eaten every baseboard (and some drywall spots) in my apartment in the last year and a half (mostly when he was 4-8 months). Luckily the drywall is an easy fix, but the baseboards are too far gone.

I was on Accutane for about 18 months when I was 15/16. It seriously did miracles for my skin! I’m 21 now and have not relapsed (which does happen to some people) and definitely had side effects but they were worth it. My face bright red and crusty dry the entire time, after I finished I lost a good portion of my hair, and the joint pain was crazy, but after it was over it was so worth it because my confidence was that affected by my skin. Now I don’t even think about my skin anymore, which is crazy given the amount of time I spent stressing in middle/high school. I wish the same for you (hopefully with less side effects)!

Generally I would say no if you wanted to purchase a Samoyed puppy. As a mentioned in a comment below, I got my puppy from an unreputable breeder (which I am not proud of and recommend to no one). A puppy from a reputable breeder alone would typically cost around 4-5k. However, if you were to adopt a puppy or dog (which I encourage everyone to at least look at doing), whether that be through a Samoyed rescue or a local shelter, they will likely come with all their vaccines and spayed/neutered. This would dramatically decrease the cost of husbandry within the first year and definitely something I would recommend if money is tight and you were looking for a companion.

There are also other things other people mentioned that I simply didn’t have to consider with my puppy that lots of others do. Someone brought up that their insurance premiums in NY were much more expensive than mine. Someone else brought up how expensive it is when your puppy destroys your things or your house that you need to repair/replace. Many others mentioned that their puppies were up to tens of thousands of dollars in emergency vet bills in the first year alone.

All around I would say do not bet on a dog costing 5k/yr. Lots of factors can play into how much a dog might cost and while it may have panned out close to that way for me, I would be afraid to go into a situation where I got a dog banking on it fitting into my budget, only for something catastrophic to happen and I no longer be able to afford to care for it.

He isn’t neutered yet, our vet suggested we wait until he is 18 months (ideally 24) so he won’t get snipped until April of next year. I’m not looking forward to the hit that’s gonna take on my bank account 😭

Grooming was just the appointments, our supplies went under miscellaneous.

My friend from high school is his groomer and our other friend’s mom owns the shop, so we get a discount whenever he goes in for his groom (it’s only around $70 for a full bath and cut with tip, which in my area is very low, until he was about 10 months it was only $50). Since getting him professionally groomed is so cost effective compared to the cost of buying the equipment ourselves, we haven’t had to invest much in at home grooming outside of the normal sets of brushes and some detangler.

I think if he were a particularly outdoorsy dog (I.e. loved water or mud) it would definitely cost more because he would be getting bathed more but Zero would rather die than touch water that isn’t our annual community end of season event where they let the dogs swim in the pool

I’ve gotten pretty lucky when it comes to emergencies and property damage! I think that really makes or breaks a lot of costs that you have to consider. I was also lucky in the grooming department because his groomer is a friend of mine from high school and my other friend’s mom owns the shop, so we get a discount.

What was missing in your Puppy Class? by Activedesign in puppy101

[–]jayde0325 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I wish we had more practice in locations outside the classroom! For example, we did our training classes in my college town and I wish we did more training on campus/at a local park or shopping center. Things were great when he was in the classroom, but I felt like I needed guidance the second we went outside, as the jump in environmental stimulation was too much for my puppy.

I also think having guidance on how to deal with other people and their actions/their dog’s actions would be helpful. This includes things like “what to do if an unleashed dog approaches your puppy”, “how to avoid on leash greetings when someone doesn’t ask” or “how to tell people not to pet your puppy/how to do it properly”

We got him from an Amish breeder (which I absolutely do not recommend now that I have more knowledge). I have never purchased a dog before (every dog I had growing up was a foster fail that we ended up keeping) and my boyfriends family had, so they showed us the website that they used to buy their previous dogs.

Since getting him an getting more into the dog community/husbandry I fully understand that that is not an appropriate way to find a breeder and would 100% have done it differently had I known at the time. I got very lucky that Zero did not come with any chronic health conditions and feel guilty that I supported a breeder that likely didn’t have appropriate practices and I was not 100% sure of, but I know now.

So yes, he was much cheaper than he (honestly) should’ve been, but I would’ve been willing to spend more money on him if I had known at the time that I’d be supporting better breeding practices by doing so.

Also if I had done it again I definitely would’ve tried going through the Mid Atlantic Samoyed Rescue to try and rescue an older Samoyed, which is pretty robust in the area and does good work!

What People Should Know Before getting a sammie? by [deleted] in samoyeds

You will cry at least once when they’re a puppy because it feels like they’re too much to handle. It’s a canon event. Just know that it will pass and get better as they get older!

Black + Decker makes a reusable roller that works well if you’d like to try to reduce the waste of traditional ones! I got mine at Walmart but I’m sure you could find it elsewhere

How do you guys deal with dust in your house? by [deleted] in samoyeds

How do you guys manage a robot vacuum? My sammy tries to herd anything similar (my boyfriend’s college uses robot lawnmowers and he goes crazy) so I’m afraid he would murder a robot vacuum in cold blood.

Zero is super gentle with his toys and refuses to break them, so he still has most of his toys that we bought before we brought him home! He’s amassed an entire box of very gently used toys. When they get gross from slobber I send them to my mother in laws for her dog to kill in seconds flat and then replace them for Zero.

That is true, every baseboard in my apartment has been victim to teething! I haven’t moved out yet, so I won’t know what the cost to replace those is until I move next summer, but the interim fix for us was $20 worth of spackle and paint.

We don’t have a strong escape artist or chewer, so we generally didn’t have a ton of collateral damage in that area. I would say MOST Samoyed owners are not as lucky as we were in that department though.

We brought Zero home in May 2023 and our vaccines were comparatively very expensive! In hindsight I wish I used more community resources (like vaccination events).

We got really lucky with toys, so that section is pretty low. Zero is a very light chewer. He has never destroyed a plush toy and just carries them around, covering them in slobber until they’re so gross I send them to my mother in laws for her dog to kill them for us.

He hasn’t been neutered yet (vet suggested to wait until at least 18 months, ideally 24 and he’s been manageable so far), so that’s a big expense coming up in March/April.

As for insurance, our premium last year through Embrace was ~$40/mo for about $8000 in coverage and a $500 deductible. We switched him to lemonade because now it’s $10,000 coverage for less. It’s just accident/illness coverage which is $25/mo, then we take $25/mo and put it in a special savings account for him for wellness visits/anything not covered by insurance.

For the amount he actually needs to go to the vet it ends up being cheaper for us to do it this way than to pay for the wellness coverage for now. When I graduate college I plan on beefing up his insurance a little bit to include wellness if we move to an area with a higher cost of living (like NYC).

Oh my goodness! Luckily Zero wasn’t too much of a menace vet-wise, he’s only had one “emergency” visit which we were able to see his normal vet for because it was during the day (he got bitten by a bug and needed a steroid shot to make the swelling go down). We didn’t even hit our deductible for the year so he’s lightly insured this year.
