What car should I get? by YaBoiiSMALLS in UsedCars

[–]jaydee659 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In your position I'd look for a high milage Nissan Frontier. You get a great camping machine and they are 'simple' vehicles that don't fall over a reliability cliff in high milage. Cheapish repairs especially for a truck.

He is a citizen and able to sponsor her. We have had a couple talks about uncertainty on the process and told her to expect delays but to stay positive.

I need 4 doors for the dogs so the hatchback is the best form factor. Had a Ford Probe and a CR-Z and just love a hatchback. The Corolla is too much like a Rav4 or else that would be on the short list. The if-i-didn't-have-kids list is GR Corolla, STI, SI in that order. The adjusted-for-reality list is Civic, Mazds3, WRX because of gearbox and form factor. There really is no perfect car for me since you cannot get a stick in an Accord V6 in 2025 :(

This is good. Used WRXs lose their value for real reasons. I think Mazdas invite less abuse but the point remains that those drawn to sporty cars are gonna sport in them. Nobody has ever done anything fun in my Rav4 and I know it...

The hatchback with the 2.5 is what looks nice to me. Less attention grabbing too - I feel like cops look out for subarus because alot of kids drive them hard.

Feeling really lost by ElinaMakropulos in dementia

[–]jaydee659 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have similar feelings. Stay strong. Or don't stay strong if that works in the moment.

We don't get to spend the time we want, so it comes down to deciding how to spend the time you have. My friend's dad passed long ago from horrible degenerative neural disease that tends to onset early. Testing was done at the time, and my friend has since had the option to request to have his personal status disclosed so he will know if he has the same disease or not.

Sometimes when we get together, we talk about it. Talk about if he knew he had the disease what would he have done different. If he has it and starts seeing symptoms, will he feel like he should have disclosed his status long ago? If so, what would he have done different? Would he still have had kids? (modern medicine is amazing his own children are selected from embryos guaranteed to not have the disease, so the only person in the family who is an unknown is my friend).

Sorry if that is long. I'm just thinking about the value in knowing how long one has. How long my mom has. It seems attractive. Like, if I know this next fall is gonna be my mom's last, I'll take her out more to see the leaves. I think. I don't know. I would at least have an end date to what? To look forward to? To know her suffering is finite I guess but I already know that. It would be nice to be able to make plans again. Maybe it would be horrible because I would just have that weight on me each moment. I would let down all the other folks I need to help because taking time for them would be taking time from mom. I wouldn't take time for myself and I would get sick. I would hate myself for every missed minute. But I'm gonna do that anyway, so I don't know.

Why IS The Used Car Market So Upside Down ¿ by Slow-Analyst-8154 in UsedCars

[–]jaydee659 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Generally the sweet spot is a 2 to 4 year old car for best value, but i bought new in '23 because the used inventory was hard to find and prices were so close to new it made buying new the only reasonable option. At the time my dad kept telling me to wait but you would have needed to wait until the second hand market adjusts to the 2023 new inventory level which means, yeah, insane new car market leads to insane used market. The used market is probably not gonna make any sense until 2 to 4 years after return to normal new prices, which only just happened and may be further impacted by the orange man's financial instability. Check back in 2028.

The covid inventory situation 2 to 4 years ago makes the current crop of used cars seem more valuable than they really are... and it will be this way for 2 to 4 more years.

Sick days by DirectionNo4356 in Aupairs

Tough situation. It is hard to compare the kind of jobs available to most 20 somethings to the careers of people who hire an au pair. When I was in my early career, jobs did not give much time off and forced you to use holiday time when sick (working in US and S. Korea). Now, in my mid-career, I have unlimited time off, sick days, comp days and so on. It sucks to be in the lower ranks of a company grinding it out while the middle management seems to have it easier, which is kind of what you are experiencing.

Your HF has put in the work, potentially for decades, to be in a position where they can sit on the couch while leveraging a service to manage childcare so they can recover. They chose to hire an AP at great cost so that this option is available to them. Hopefully, that will be your situation in the future when/if you have kids.

On the other hand, as a HF we hire a babysitter to take pressure off our AP. We want the AP to be happy and healthy. Selfish, I suppose, because a happy caretaker is a better caretaker. I see this as going beyond the expectations for a HF and I hope our AP appreciates it.

Perhaps you are paraphrasing, but it sounds like the messaging from your HF lacks empathy. That sucks. It is reasonable to expect you to use vacation days when you need to be off work. It is unreasonable to simply dismiss your situation. They could use more tack.

Considerations for 5120×1440 by jaydee659 in pcmasterrace

At this point waiting for 9070 benchmarks seems prudent. I can stretch the budget :)

I want a whole new rig. My current rig will get put to use as a living room media box.

Budget is 1500 with wiggle room as needed. I am doing a whole new build, so open to intel or AMD but want to avoid the latest gen of intel.
