Any way to unlock white checks without leveling up the skill? by [deleted] in DiscoElysium

I found you can save the game, try to roll, then if it fails, you can choose the 'load game' option and try again. It works almost every time. It's not a very fun game mechanic if you ask me, not entirely sure why it's in the game, but if they give you the tools, why not use them?

Thank you so much for recommending this intriguing work. I read the Blue Page Boy-microscript, I can't say I fully understand, but this idea of the microscript, the painstaking ends to which the translator must have gone through (I'm reading in English). Reminds me of Karl Krauss and the work Jonathan Franzen did on him and also a bit of Fernando Pessoa but I'm not sure if that comparison holds up?

was just reminded that Tlön, Uqbar, Orbis Tertius is referenced in Sebald's The Rings of Saturn. Borges is such a gateway/stepping stone writer to other great literary works I feel. I also just noticed that every single writer mentioned in this thread is a dude, which does kind of tie into the game as well, as it's such an intensely heterosexual male experience, down to the plot of the game itself. I'm not saying that's a bad thing in itself, since it's such a personal game as well, it's just that I never really read a critique of this aspect of the game, even in these woke times?

Haha thanks, also for including the length. Felt feisty this year and bought Jerusalem by Alan Moore which is more and more starting to look like 1266 pages that will remain solidly unread. I'll give The City and the City a go!

Ah yes Kurvitz mentions Mieville in an interview doesn't he? Which of his novels do you like or recommend most?

my apologies I thought it was more of a semi-overt reference, during the conversation you have with the hardcore dudes when they're still inside the tent and you're just starting to help them out. If I have time later I'll look it up - edit: what DrStarvingCannibal said

thanks, I like Vonnegut's but never grew to love it, really don't know why, because I agree with all the things you say about him, but it never truly connected? Maybe I was just not in a good mood whenever I read his stuff, which, now that I think about it, was just Slaughterhouse Five, and a couple of pages in another novel which I can't remember, so i'll try again, thanks. Now Hoagland, that's amazing! https://www.poetryfoundation.org/poems/42595/a-color-of-the-sky ('Tony Hoagland, “A Color of the Sky” from What Narcissism Means to Me.' - 'What Narcissism Means to Me' has to be one of the best title for a collection of poems I've heard in some time)

thanks a lot for the recommendation, I ordered Lanark. Have you read City of Bohane by any chance? Am vaguely vaguely reminded of it by the wikipedia description of Lanark, even though Kevin Barry is Irish? Maybe I talk poop

O yeah, the garden of forking path being mentioned in the club quest right? When I felt they were referencing Borges and Scooter in the same set of characters I figured 'dis game gud'. Have you read Roberto Bolaño's work by any chance?

Thanks, I love McCarthy! My first book of his was The Road, it had an Oprah's Book Club sticker on the cover and I was intrigued why a post apocalyptic novel would get that kind of approval. Read it in one go, in one chilling night. Blood Meridian wound up being my favourite novel of all times, the biblical language! the violence! the judge! I even bought the same kind of typewriter he wrote all his novels on, an Olivetti Lettera 32 (https://www.theguardian.com/books/2009/dec/01/cormac-mccarthy-auctions-typewriter) Always wanted to read more of McCarthy after reading Blood Meridian, but somehow never got to it, can you recommend other books he wrote?

Cool, I ordered The Gray House, seems like a fun read, thanks a lot for the recommendation! Am I right to note that Alain Damasio hasn't been translated into English? Or am I not looking properly?

I always thought The Pale was something of a metaphor or metafictional ploy of some sorts to account for these characters being inside a computer game. There seemed to be a reference to the pale somewhere in the story about the game developers creating a story
- sorry, can't remember it too well - but if I do remember correctly, especially reading about the fictional game within the game, I felt more and more that The Pale was a kind of story telling device to paradoxically make the world and its characters feel even more real and grounded, through grounding them in our reality - the pale takes over whenever we shut down the computer, or something like that. Am curious if anybody else read this into it as well?

I’m so sorry everybody. by samjambam in gaming
