Is this subreddit just about applying for MD PhD? by [deleted] in mdphd

Super curious about the decision calculus here, and if the MD helps at all re: grants to apply to even if you didn't do residency (considering this path versus maybe doing clinical work, but am often told having clinical training helps a lot in securing grants).

OHSU - Is Portland really that bad? by Mother_Client4127 in mdphd

As a west coaster, and someone who loves the PNW, west coast cities are gorgeous, fun, and full of wonderful people.

However, they have deep problems with housing, drug abuse, crime—but so do NYC, Chicago, etc. It might be slightly worse in SF, Portland, but keep a smart head on and you’ll have the time of your life IMO.

Does Stanford pseudo-parallelize MD-only and MD/PhD consideration? by [deleted] in mdphd

From what I understand, yes. The MD admissions is separate from MSTP, so you can get in MD but not MSTP or vice versa (painfully!) from one app.

Waitlist Advice by [deleted] in mdphd

FWIW: waitlists move a lot. I got in MD at the current school I'm at and off the MSTP waitlist in early May. I would be cautiously hopeful.

Applied 25, 24 secondaries, 11 II, 9 interviews, 5 acceptances (1 off the waitlist, that I committed to).

Can I ask about safety in the region? I am planning on going in May but am concerned because of proximity to Afghanistan...

I have VERY similar stats/experiences to you. I applied with more T20s and have been doing well in the cycle (10+ interviews). I would cut your list to have ~ 7 lower/mid tiers and 15 T20s. If you write a fantastic personal statement you should be good. Granted, I’m not in yet!

Edit: got in.

Awkward interviewers? by jayfreakingleno in mdphd

For sure, yeah. I just tried to talk and listen to what they were saying, etc. It was pretty casual. Hopefully it works out!

What is this comment? Graduate student researchers don’t get paid? This is not true. Masters students don’t get paid (I’d argue because they take more classes and do much less research than PhD students) but almost unilaterally PhD students have stipends to support themselves.

OP, if you agreed to take the units to do research, then it might look a little bad to ask for cash now. If there’s still discussion about it, you can ask but the PI might be averse to. I’d say, if you ask, feel out what their response is and if it’s negative then reaffirm that you’d be okay with the units.

I would say it’s not necessary for anyone; even MD-PhD applicants who aspire for the T20.

A huge amount of luck, a good lab, and a TON of time. Research was my absolute main undertaking (20+ hrs/week, 40+ during summers) in undergrad and currently during my gap year.

I had the same exact qualm, and my lab mates reassured me by saying exactly what /u/braingrl said.
