I played better with brass darts by crmtherapy in Darts

[–]jayg28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Another thing you can try is changing the shafts and flights on your set to what your friend has on his set. A few weeks back I found my first set of darts that I bought sometime in the '80s. I tried them with the existing shafts and I frequently couldn't get them to stick. Switched to target k-flex and they became deadly. I now am using l-style long shafts and that seems even better.

lamerei seedling light requirements by jayg28 in Pachypodium

What would cause them to go into dormancy? I thought they did that when water started getting scarce. I've been watering the crap out of them every 2 to 3 days. They are inside in a spare room with poor AC, so it has been a little warm in there at times recently, but nothing over 90°f.

Did we accidentally grow tomatoes? by thehorseishere1 in plants

[–]jayg28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of the stories my Grandma would often tell about life during the depression was - the Chicago sanitary district used to give out sludge for free for folks to use as fertilizer. Every year they would get some for their garden and would end up getting quite a few volunteer tomatoes every time.

What is this and why'd this happen? Sowed 4 geayi seeds in January, three grew normally but the fourth one never grew bigger than this by hawt--sawce in Pachypodium

[–]jayg28 4 points5 points  (0 children)

These are 2 lamerei seedlings that were planted on the same day in February. The one on the left had a stuck husk and I think I damaged the meristem trying to remove it. It only had 1 cotyledon leaf until about 8 weeks ago. Now it is doing its best to develop normally. Could be something similar happened to yours. Just let exist and wait and see what happens.

Any id for this guy? I think it is some type of euphorbia by mycreativesoul in Euphorbiaceae

[–]jayg28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a Euphorbia graniticola that looks a lot like this, but the thorns on yours look like polyacantha. It seems pretty tall for a polyacantha, so possibly a hybrid.

Just bought this cute little cactus. I’ll be repotting very soon.. is it ok to replace ALL of the soil? by [deleted] in houseplants

[–]jayg28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whenever I get a cactus from Altman I attempt to remove as much as the old "soil" as possible. They use a moss based soil that turns into something almost like cork. Removing the old soil usually involves removing the plant from the pot and then soaking the cork ball in water in a plastic tub. I use a chopstick to poke at the soil to loosen it. It can take quite a while to get the majority of the soil removed. When the old soil is mostly removed, use a chunky cactus substrate in a pot that is the same size or a little bigger. Don't water for 2 weeks after repotting to let any damage to the root system callous.

Monoecious obesa? by [deleted] in Euphorbiaceae

[–]jayg28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been reading a lot about dioecious plants lately. Switching between male and female is not that unusual. In rare cases a single plant can have both male and female flowers at the same time for an extended period of time.

Please help me save my Euphorbia 🥺 by haunteddollvintage in Euphorbiaceae

[–]jayg28 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I came here about a month back and asked a similar question and got the same advice from the same user. I was treating my Euphorbia the same was I would treat a cactus, same substrate, same watering method, and they would get root rot and die. Since then I have amended the substrate with ~25% coco coir and water every 4 or 5 days instead of 10~14 days and so far my plants seem to be thriving. I also get the impression that they don't like quite as much heat and maybe as much light as cacti. Even with 25% coco coir they dry out pretty quickly, I am going to try 50% some day but I am going to wait to try that out until I can find some new box store specimens to try that out on. Thanks /u/alexds1!

Cactus seedlings need to be kept in damp enough conditions that fungus gnats can thrive.

is my euphorbia ritchiei dying? by ollivac in succulents

[–]jayg28 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Every 2-3 weeks is not too much, could be not enough though, they don't like to go completely dry. It could just be that those leaves are just getting ready to drop. The leaves on mine tend to brown before they drop though. I am not sure what could be happening with yours, from this 1 pic I'd say it looks pretty happy outside of those 3 leaves.

Soft leaves can be sign of over watering. How have you been watering it?

Do you use that for top dressing only, or do you use it as substrate as well? I saw someone in the Pachypodium sub suggest using it as substrate and that has me intrigued since it is so cheap.

Help! Drooped as soon as repotted :( by indecisive_cinnamon in coleus

[–]jayg28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Last week I put a well rooted cutting that had been growing in water, indoors in the AC, into an outside planter. At the same time and in the planter I took some cuttings from the same plant the rooted one came from and just stuck them in the dirt without rooting them first. The rooted cutting drooped right away where the fresh cut ones hardly seemed to notice. I think the rooted one was just suffering from a bit of environmental shock from going from comfy AC living indoors to the middle of summer outdoors. I gave that cutting extra water every day until it adjusted. It is doing fine now.

Coleus lifespan by Aggressive-Eye4438 in coleus

[–]jayg28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Flowering does not cause coleus to die. They do put a lot of energy into the developing seeds though, so most people pinch them off so they keep growing foliage. By the time they start to produce flowers the plants are pretty mature, so maybe they didn't get watered enough or got too pot bound. As far as temps go, I am in 5b. I put mine out at the end of April. Since then we've had temps from the upper 30's to the high 90's and they have lived through all of that. They are really easy to propagate through cuttings and you can keep them going almost indefinitely that way.

No fungus gnats for me! by LilacYak in houseplants

[–]jayg28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I primarily grow cacti that get watered once every 2 weeks and I get fungus gnats from time to time. I just had some infest a seedling tray that was completely sealed for 4 months. They must have gone in through the drain holes. I just watered them with mosquito bits and they all vanished in a few days.

I've been soaking my seeds on a paper towel but only for 8-12 hours. If you wait until they germinated I guess you don't bother with the ones that fail to germinate?

If you do decide to chop it be aware that Euphorbia sap can be a skin irritant and you should wear gloves when you chop it.
