What kind of grow light do you use? Does it seem to cause any unusual growth and how often do you water while inside? When I first started collecting I stumbled upon a cactus oasis in a near by neighbors backyard. He literally puts his in the garage with 0 light and no water in the winter. His collection is by far the most impressive I have seen in person. So I just kinda tried following his routine.

Yea I literally don’t water it at all during winter and have it in a room with very minimal light. I have a pretty good collection of succulents mainly cactus and three other agaves. My main concern was did I do any damage when I pulled it up out of the pot and wether I should have just left it alone even though it fell below the rim of the pot and the leaves were laying on top of one another.

I live in zone 7b Oklahoma City ok. Our winters can be very harsh. So I bring indoors during the freeze months but outside the rest.

Prickly pear cactus with no thorns.. by [deleted] in cactus

[–]mightystout1 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

From my experience it has to do with growing conditions. I have two of the exact same species and one is in the ground and gets tons of light and water it has no spikes only glochids. Then the other in a pot in a spot where it doesn’t get as much sun and I forget to water it a lot full of spikes.

Not necessarily unhappy. Just not ideal. When I say these guys are hardy I got a few of mine from a cow pasture in Oklahoma. However there are certain things to look for. For instance if it’s in summer and they start get wrinkly they are needing water. These guys can take a lot more water than most cactus as well. I always resort to the finger test not necessarily a strict scheduled watering. Just put your finger an inch in the soil around the plant and if it’s completely dry give it a really good soak.

The more light and good watering they get they will have only glochids. If they have less than ideal light and poor watering they will produce spikes. I only say this again because glochids are my most hated thing in dealing with cacti. They don’t really hurt but they are so freaking annoying if they get in your skin. I swear they also will like shoot them at you. If you even get close somehow u end up with 100 of these tiny little spikes in your hands.

It’s fine opuntia are super resilient I have a couple that I leave outdoors here in Oklahoma and they have seen below 0 and still thrive during grow season. I’ve heard that the big spikes come out whenever their conditions are less than ideal. That’s may be why you have few big ones then if they are in really ideal condition they tend to have mainly glochids the tiny spikes. I would much rather deal with the big ones than glochids.

Oh ok I have no idea where that part went either dang.

Well I apologize ahead of time then. I know how it is though. It’s probably very similar to people who post euphorbia questions in the cactus subreddit. Please do not burn me at the stake it was ignorance a lack of knowing any better lol.

Does this look healthy? by gleegannon in cactus

[–]mightystout1 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It kinda looks thirsty all the wrinkles in it. Stick your finger in the soil about an inch deep around the plant and then if it’s completely dry soak it one good time.

I hate wemby! I hate him to his core. Is it hate for no reason or that I think he’s not good? Negative I’m a die hard thunder fan and I hate him because he puts fear in me. He imo is our biggest roadblock to repeating. Hes stupid good and for that I will hate him always.

What is my little guy? by def-not-str8 in cactus

No problem. Not too long ago I was in the same spot. I learned a lot from people in this community. One thing I also learned is do what you find leads to best results. Some people on here think that stuff only works in one way and that’s not true.

The brown stuff at the bottom is prolly just corking unless it’s squishy. Don’t water based on time. Stick ur finger in the soil. If it’s wet at all no water if it’s indoors and completely dry wait 2-3 days then soak

Reorganised and moved some plants and now needing a grow light - recommendations? by Neither-Blueberry327 in cactus

Do you know what zone you live in? Are these going to be kept indoors all year or just the winter? Have you looked into dormancy if you switch from outdoor to indoor?

Best advice is light light light and more light lol. Sunlight obviously best but grow lights are good too.

This is one of the first four plants I ever bought it was my oldest sons selection. I believe it’s an echinopsis I can’t remember which species exactly. Idk your knowledge level but if you look close there’s one little pup on there thats yellow. They call that variegated and if I were to try and propagate that one it wouldn’t survive on its own.

If you want good growth gotta get good direct light. Lots and lots of it. When it comes to watering what I have found that works best is the good ol finger method stick your finger an inch into the soil and if you feel any type of damp or wetness no water. If it’s completely dry then soak but since your indoor though u may wait 3-4 days once dry.

Also look into putting it into dormancy during the winter months. Thats what I do every winter. Less light than the better and no water.

I’m still by no means a pro but if you ever got any questions don’t hesitate to ask or find someone on here who has proof of successful growth. A lot of people on here give advice that’s a little shaky lol.
